So true.. to a point But it does help reduce the number of days you can't get outside.. and in some areas eliminates excuses totally. But sometimes it's fun to not worry about it.. run outside in whatever you're in, no jackets etc when the first snow falls (if you get snow) and try and catch snow flakes and when the first thrill wears off and you're cold.. run back inside and have hot chocolate. just for instance. Or dance in the rain and jump in the mud puddles and then come in and change clothes.

I have to agree. There is nothing more miserable than a nature hike when everyone is freezing or wet or hot or...
I have learned to invest in really good winter clothes especially. No more bargain store coats for my kids. The zippers break. I buy a really good coat for my oldest and it gets passed down.
Last year besides the winter clothing, I bought rain gear for everyone. I'm talking jackets, pants and boots, all good quality. I had to save the money for it but it is so worth it. Now, if it's raining, we just put on our gear and continue with our plan of a nature hike. Of course, storms with thunder and lightening are certainly reasons to cancel, but with the proper gear rain or cold doesn't slow us down.
My kids love to put their rain clothes on and go and play in the puddles!

Coming back to add that a good system for wet/snowy/muddy clothes when play time is over makes the whole "going outside thing" better as well. Before we had a system in place I did not encourage my kids to go outside in wet weather because I didn't want to deal with the wet clothing. Now that we have a system that works it's so much better!

I would love to hear ideas for just such a system! My least favorite thing about winter is how the boots, wet clothes, and mud kind of take over the house!
I'm going to start a new thread over in "Planning and Ordering Our Days". Would you be willing to share your system with us over there, Becky?

No judgment here. Unfortunately, my kids are still so young that I have to be outside while they are playing. We don't have a fenced in yard. My oldest is 4.5. I used to dread it, but I really think my day goes so much more smoothly when they play outside. If you want the truth, I actually feel much better after being outside as well.
Some days, when I don't feel running around with the kids, I just sit on a rocker on our front porch and knit or read while keeping an eye on them. I usually throw the ball with our dog though since she is a hyper lab and needs to run. Maybe if you went outside with them (even just sitting out there), your daughter would be more likely to go. Or maybe she just doesn't really like the outdoors and is more like her mommy. If she has fun once she is out there, I would require it. However, if she really doesn't enjoy herself, maybe you could let her out of it a couple of times a week to do something active that she enjoys (our kids love our little indoor trampoline).
BTW, I love that someone used inter alia. Do we have another lawyer on here? I used to practice law.
