Hope it's OK I started this new movie thread.
We watched a lot of movies over Christmas but mostly the same ones we do every year. One new one we liked enough to add to our annual list was The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey which I'm sure many of you have seen.
The other night I watched Monsieur Vincent about St. Vincent de Paul. It's an old 1947 black and white movie and unfortunately the sound went in and out, but OTOH it's in French and was subtitled in English so it didn't matter. It was excellent and made me want to read more about him.
Then today I took the kids to see the new Narnia movie Voyage of the Dawn Treader. I was not happy with Prince Caspian when it came out b/c of the increase in battles and the age of Caspian compared to the book (as well as he and Susan being an item). I thought VoDT was much better, even though it significantly deviates from the book as well. It didn't leave much out, except shortening things for length, and it only added some details that made things explainable without making it even longer (it was a full 2 hours). We saw it in 3D and I liked that.

My dh and I just watched National Treasure with Nicholas Cage.
It was fun- some Indiana Jones type violence (though much tamer, I thought, than the IJ movies) but very "clean" otherwise. It does talk about the Free Masons some, which threw me at first. Apparently a lot of the symbolism on our currency and architecture is from the Free Masons, which is disconcerting.
But I enjoyed it, especially a lot of the humor. Looks like there is a sequel to it out and maybe a third? Dh got it from net flix

Inception
Shutter island
both starring leonardo DiCaprio and both full of twists and turns. Pretty good, although I would like to watch each one over now that I've seen the endings

We saw Inception in the theater back in Nov. and watched Shutter Island just the other night. And, you're right....they were both very "complicated" and I'd like to see them again.

DH and I watched Marie Antoinette last night. My review: don't bother.
Pretty much, no acting, no plot, but beautiful costumes.
We'll have to watch some of the movies you all have recommended.
Peace,
Nancy

If you want beautiful costumes AND a great story, you should check out Young Victoria if you haven't already!

I just recently watched Young Victoria myself and thought it was pretty good. I loved the little blurb at the end that told how she honored his memory the rest of her life.
Seastar, I liked National Treasure too but found the sequel to be not so great. I don't remember if it was any different as far as violence, etc. but just not as interesting IMO. And yes, there is a lot of Freemason symbolism in our government b/c many of the Founding Fathers were Freemasons - Washington, Jefferson and Franklin, probably many others.

best chick flick I saw last year was "Leap Year"... hard to find a fun, innocent romantic comedy.
Really liked "Temple Grandin"... it was very well shot, acted and directed.
Loved Inception.

Yes! Temple Grandin was SO GOOD! Highly recommended!!
And, I enjoyed Leap Year too! A friend of mine, who normally likes the same movies I do, didn't really care for it, so it took a long time for me to get it. But I really liked it! Cute and innocent, which was a nice change.

Just saw Inception on Pay-Per-View last weekend. DH and I thought it was a deal--$5.99 for a movie! And the popcorn was free!
EXCELLENT!! Highly recommend it!! We love "thinking" movies.

Leap year was good!
Mother and child I found this on the new release wall at blockbuster- a movie about motherhood, adoption, etc... could have been great movie but we had to fast forward through too many detailed sex scenes and the many many curse words were too much. I do NOT recommend this at all

We watched 2 movies over the past couple of weeks that we really liked:
Taking Chance - JennGM recommended this one in the Movies 2010 thread, and it was really good! A desert-storm-vet volunteers for military escort duty to accompany a fallen soldier's remains to his family. HBO movie. More about the movie here. It's based on the escort's journal, as he was so moved by the outpouring of respect and support as he journeyed across the country. Highly recommended. Very patriotic!
Brothers - I was skeptical about this one, but we ended up really liking it...talked about it for days. Natalie Portman, Tobey Maquire and Jake Gyllenhaal are all EXCELLENT in it.

We saw two pretty good movies this past weekend:
The Treasure Seekers, from the E. Nesbitt book. I hadn't read the book yet so can't say how close it was but it was a nice movie.
The Canterville Ghost - we found this one on download from Netflix and apparently it's based on a story by Oscar Wilde. The setting was made a bit more modern than he would have written I'm sure, but it was interesting. There are a few spooky scenes, but the ghost is not evil, but stuck there b/c of his mistakes in life, until he can be forgiven. In order to do this, the girl must pray for him, which was nice to see in a movie, for a change. It doesn't show her as being religious overall, but does have that theme of forgiveness and redemption. I'd say the spooky level is akin to A Christmas Carol when deciding for children to watch.
And last week I started watching Hamlet with Kenneth Brannaugh. I loved it, but unfortunately didn't get to finish it - it's 4 hours long and it was due back to our library. I'm waiting to get it again and finish. I'd just read Hamlet last fall with ds17 for British Lit. and it's a great production. And then, last night in the ghost movie, they do one scene from Hamlet! (the ghost scene, what else?)
Karen
ETA update 3/2/11 - finished Hamlet finally last night. It was beautiful, such lovely costumes and the acting was superb. Besides Brannaugh, it has Julie Christie, Kate Winslet, and many other names, including some I was surprised to see in a Shakespearean play - Billy Crystal and Robin Williams! small parts for them but they were good too.

We just watched FOREVER STRONG. It is a Christian movie about a rugby team. Great message. It is pg13 because of some drug images and alcohol. But it's teen stuff and important to the movie.

Ugh! THE FIGHTER was HORRIBLE! Awful! It was a painful, painful movie in SO MANY WAYS! I cannot BELIEVE this was up for accademy awards, or whatever it was up for!!!! The only "good" thing about it was Christian Bale's acting.....too bad he was portraying a miserable character. My husband HATED it too!
Watch all 4 Rocky movies instead!

Unstoppable- really good!
The Last Song- with Miley Cyrus. Didn't have high hopes for this one, but it turned out to be a cute story. About a rebelious ten who lives with her dad for the summer. Finds out her dad is dying and finally gets out of her bad attitude
The Greatest- I would skip the beginning (teen sex scene) but the rest of the story waS real cute. When their teenaged son died in a car accident his girlfriend shows up at their door prgnant
