Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm grabbing the "H". Hana in the Time of Tulips by Deborah Noyes

Deborah Noyes writes in the "time of Rembrandt" about a young girl, Hana, and her father's tulip prospecting. Hana wants to be a doctor and tends to her father's ailments, but as her father worries about his "tulip business", he seems to grow farther and farther away from her. Hana tries to cheer him up with a sprig of rosemary, fireflies, and by weaving nature's simple smile out of daisies. Eventually, Hana (Rembrandt's student) paints a beautiful tulip for her father and succeeds in drawing him out.

Now for an "S".

"Y" is getting hard. This is a book that the wonderful Jen L. helped me find the title of last year - it was one I remembered from kindergarten but didn't have the title.

You Will Go to the Moon - Mae Freeman

Nine Days to Christmas, by Marie Hall Ets, Caldecott

Jenn, for mentioning it. I just returned this to the library. It is a book I just rediscovered and remember fondly from childhood. I vaguely remembered a book about a pinata and a girl being sad about cracking it open. I did a search - thought the cover looked familiar and got it - YES, it was the book. I hadn't remembered that it was about Los Posadas, probably because as a kid I had no sense of what los posadas were. So just added it to my Advent books. I vividly remember now the part about the star pinata becoming a "real" star. Reading it just totally threw me back 40 years, because it is one I hadn't read at all since that time.

I found it by accident at a used book sale, can't remember where. It won Caldecott honors and I was thrilled to find it was Posadas related!

The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore. I'm rather partial to Tasha Tudor's many versions.

2010-10-02_125924_Picture_Book_Game.xls Here's the updated file. 153 books, not including the one I just posted!

Dem Bones by Bob Barner

I think this would be a great book to add to All Souls/Day of the Dead theme. It's informative about skeletons and bones, but I think it makes the skeletons non-scary.

The Scholastic Video of this is fantastic, especially to sing-along!

I mentioned this earlier before I found out that Bob Barnes has a new book, bilingual edition Day of the Dead which totally goes right next to Dem Bones. I know it's not the letter...but I wanted to mention it.

Sweet Tooth by Margie Palatini

This book is a "treat"! It deals with a talking molar getting a young boy into trouble for gobbling desserts. Very clever story marketed for K-3 grades.

Harry and the Lady Next Door

Gene Zion

I can't help it, this book cracks me up. The fat lady is still singing... poor Harry!

And, alas, I have never been able to get my hands on a copy of Sugar Mouse Cake by the same author.

If I get an idea for a book, I have a draft email I've been jotting them down. I've got a few R books, as a matter of fact.

So, Rain Makes Applesauce, by Julian Scheer illustrated by Marvin Bileck. Caledecott honor book.

Clown of God by Tomie dePaola

I checked Jenn's list and was surprised that it was still available to list! But we haven't had that many "C" opportunities.

One and One and One by Untermeyer. Not exactly "living," but cute, nonetheless.

It can be N or E now. Hmmmmm....
