What is a protomartyr? |
|
|
It means the first martyr. Stephen is the protomartyr of all the martyrs of all time. Thecla is the protomartyr of the women martyrs.
Each country or region can claim a first or protomartyr. Not all are canonized.

I guess St. Pancratius (Pancras), but I'm questioning whether this is pious legend, because officially it says he was beheaded.

Correct
Ah this is what I was worried about, that some of the answers may not be quite right. Mum is big on legend. (and martyrs )
Question 5
What does the name Holy Viaticum mean?

Oh, I love the legends, too. It's part of our history, our small "t" tradition, just like the Greek and Roman legends.
I would just pencil in a little rephrase or add "pious legend" to indicate the difference if you do find out one.

Viaticum- meaning food for the journey.
So it would be Holy Communion given to a person in danger of dying, in the Sacrament of Extreme Unction.
That sounds about right,
Leanne

I was going to say 330, but I just looked it up, and I am wrong I was *sort of* close, though, in a vague sort of way.

I know it's less than Melchisidek, but very high, like 689 or something? I'd have to look it up, too. I'm stumped.

Is it 830?
Admittedly it's just a guess, but I thought he lived for about 800 years.
