does anyone have advice? I would lean toward more natural treatments......but I will take all advice.

...and success stories.

Thanks.

We went ahead and got prescriptions for topical medications from our ped. They work well. I wanted to avoid scarring.

We got meds too, but when we were able to stay *completely* off of dairy products (even those hidden in pre-packaged foods), things improved and rubbing lavender oil on all acne areas did the trick.

I figured there was little hope of my boys trying natural remedies. A girl may be more willing to do so. But here are Janette's boys willing to try lavender oil! I went wrong somewhere.

tea tree oil might be more acceptable to some boys than lavender

topical meds helped with mine a lot - I've been fighting severe acne since I was 12 and I'm 25 now.

Things that helped me:

Dove Vitalizer scrubber with pads - they really do a good job of cleaning the face and did cut down on the acne when used daily.

Stopping wearing makeup, lotion, sunscreen, etc on acne prone areas. For me that meant face, neck, upper back, and upper arms. When I stopped trying to Cover the acne in makeup it improved quite a bit. Now I don't even lotion those areas unless they get quite dry {and then sparingly} and it really does help a lot. Sunscreen brings on an instant breakout for me so I stopped using it on my Dr's advice.

Hope it improves!

We heard that zinc cream could do wonders, also zinc supplements. I have to admit we haven't had as much success as we had hoped. I'm intrigued by the lavender/tea tree suggestions. Ds toyed with the ideas of topical creams but he really wanted to stay with natural products. I hadn't thought about staying off dairy, mmm.

Well, Bridget, they complained *every time* we had to apply! And the others made a big deal about it too -- OH, stay away from us! OH, the smell! and so on. So I don't know that I'd say they were "willing," but they thought they had no choice so they did it.      We did just do it in the evening so that they wouldn't have to be "in public" like that.

I don't know about tea tree, but if you use a high grade lavender oil you're supposed to mix it with a milder oil (can't remember which they suggested) because lavender is a strong antiseptic and can irritate/dry the skin. The kind we used wasn't as pure as some homeopathic brands so we used it straight and never had any problems.

Tea tree is pretty fragrant, too, from a male POV. (One of the dance dads had ringworm and his wife treated it with pure tea tree oil. My, oh my, did he complain!)

Chari,
I know you requested natural products, so I'm just putting this out there. I have dealt with serious acne since I was in my teens and I just turned 40 and it's still an issue.      I started using Proactive about 5 years ago out of desperation and it worked very well. It still does. My husband stopped it for a while (comes in the mail) because he said, "your skin's fine now". Within a couple of weeks it was bad again. Haven't stopped using it since. It's pretty gentle and doesn't irritate my skin at all. But I don't use the whole system...just the daily lotion. All their other stuff is just overkill and tends to make my skin too dry.

Nancy
I'm assuming you found the tea tree effective. How long did it take before you had results? What sort of results?

Tina
We were given proactive and ds was about to use it, however upon investigating we discovered a number of people who were saying once they started they had to continue or it returned so ds decided to stick with natural.

Yikes, Erin! I don't want to be using Proactive forever! So what did work for your ds? Has he had success with something natural? I'd like to switch to something natural if I could find something that worked.

Tina, I read somewhere that all adult acne is caused by a food allergy. I've had acne since I was a teen. A couple of years ago I had the flu and pneumonia and got off all dairy and my acne miraculously went away. I'd been mostly off of dairy before (when nursing because of colicky babies) but still had some problems. Now when I eat *no dairy* I have no acne. You might try looking for a food allergy connection.

Our dd23 suffers from this & now her brother ds14 has it bad bad . My sister had this too and both our children who have this have terrible oily skin like dh . His skin is so soft and wonderful but so prone to breakout because of being warm & oily all the time . I'm the opposite dry and flaky itchy
so dd used procative for along time it did help but never did rid her of the acne . She since went to her dr. I called dd to ask what to do for ds14 this is how it is rfrwesh in my mind . according to her acne is not just pimples it is a bacteria . do not try and dry out the area with cleansers and alcohol or any drying things because your body will just produce more oil . clean with water no soaps , clean with a non alcohol cleanser she reccomened nuetragena it has really worked well . she said usually just using a good cleanser will work but hers was so heavy she & her friend both had to go on meds oral meds . It seems scary to me but she said once the acne is cleared up her friend has been free of it for over a yr and off meds that long too . you only take the meds to clear it up I guess rid the bacteria maybe ? then once off just using proper cleanser I guess works .
so far ds 14 has not needed anything else . what he wreally needs is to work on his hygiene ! How one ds can be so clean and tidy and the next just flithy no concept of you can't wear the same shorts for two weeks and wear them to bed yet ! yikes . This boy also is the big sweater I wrote about smell before . The chlorophyll tabs work ! So I have lots of essential oils I'll try levender first men used to use lacenedr as thier scent all the time in our grandparents day it was a mens fragrance my dh can't stand lavenedr because it reminds him of old men he says he also can't stand scent of tea tree even more so than lavender so maybe I'll get ds onto lavender first . I'm wondering about oregano or rosemary too ? I'm so glad you posted this question !

Hi Chari,

When dd19 came home from college last year, her face was red, hot and inflamed, she was very miserable. So we started searching what would be best for her to use. During the summer she used tea tree oil, that did not work for her. We went to the health food store, asked a couple of people and through our research this is what we decided upon. She takes a multivitamin, since acne can be caused from stress, she takes a stress b-complex vitamin, during the school year she has been taking an herbal from a company called New Chapter, it is called Stress Take care. She uses Dead Sea Magic Mineral Salt Soap to cleanse her face and a natural Aloe Vera on her face after washing. Those combined helped a little, when she came home for Christmas, here face was not as bad, but still a lot of acne. She then started taking Acidophilus along with everything else.

This has helped her skin tremendously. Her skin looks so good. Hope this helps you.

God Bless
Robynn

Tina

I haven't found anything greatly successful but to be honest I haven't been on top of this problem as much as I should

Roxy

Are you familiar with calender tincture? I have had huge success with it for various skin/blood problems in the past. I've been considering trialing it on a patch of ds' skin. What do you think?

I mix lavender and tea tree oils into vitamin E cream, and the kids dab it on individual blemishes. But when that isn't enough, they get prescriptions from the derm. I hate to admit it, but 2 of mine have been on Accutane; now we just have some on oral antibiotics and prescription face washes. Like Bridget (and I'm sure everyone else) we want to avoid scarring. Dh has acne scars and feels very strongly about avoiding that. (Of course they aren't as noticeable now that he also is growing wrinkles..... ).

Peace,
Nancy

Just wanted to say that I was on Accutane during my first year of college (so, nine years ago), and it was seriously like a miracle drug for me. I had tried everything at that point with no success, but after one course of Accutane and the recovery period following, my skin was almost completely clear, and I now have only the very occasional break-out. Seriously, a huge change. I wish I had gone on it when I was still in high school, as I did get quite a bit of scarring (skin discoloration) from years of severe acne prior to the treatment.

That's probably the antithesis of a "natural" recommendation! But I thought I'd share anyway.

Erin I have not heard of calender tincture or did you mean calendula ? I've not tried that either . I think trying is better then not .
Honestly I think we need live near the ocean so ds could swim everyday it is the only time he is fully clean when he goes swimming all summer long he is most certainly our high needs child he has had poisen ivy twice already ! one yr he had it when there was still bits of snow on the ground in mid spring !
I think I'll try him on some essential oils , continue with the cleanser and hope the out of doors will also help a lot being our summer months .
If all else fails then we will hit the dr.
I'm gearing up to go offline end of the week camping here we come !
