I really have fun wearing hats..

But I have a hard time finding ones that work for me.

Where do you get hats? what style of hats do you like best? how do you wear your hair with a hat?

Oh, I love wearing hats, too!!! But, I don't have a great hat shop that I know of...and I'm eager to listen to people's preferences and how to find a good hat!!! One of my challenges is that I don't have long hair. I think hats look so pretty with a long ponytai, braid, or long hair flowing out from under them...but my hair is just above shoulder length and I sometimes feel funny under a hat for that reason.

My dd wears hats very well. Her preferences are 30's and 40's style hats she finds at the flea market. They look positively adorable on her!!!

I wish I could find a couple of really great hats! Lindsay is the expert!!!!!

There's a great hat thread from the past...I'll see if I can dig it up after evening prayers!!

Well Jen, we can blame Lindsay for this thread.. she mentioned hats over the dresses thread.. I pulled it out because it sounded like a fun discussion.

this is my Easter hat from a few years ago.. I didn't get to wear it this year because of the weather.. not something I want to take out in snow/rain.

It's funny though Jen, you say you don't like the shorter hair with hats and I struggle with my longer hair and hats because if they tuck down under the back of my head my hair pushes them back out and then they're down over my eyes in the front

I just got this one in black and I really love it. I have a couple others with wider brims for being out in the sun. I can't wear sunglasses for more than a few minutes without getting a raging headache, so I have to do hats.

Well, I've always loved looking at them.

I bought my first hat, a black velvet beret, when I was a senior in high school in Spain. You feel bold when visiting foreign countries.

When I was a freshman in college, I visited New York City and browsed the hat area of Saks Fifth (and didn't see any of the rest of the store, lol), and the beautiful older lady there (who was probably trying to sell hats) showed me several hats that would look good on me and told me I had a hat face. Maybe so, but I didn't have money. However, later on, I bought a couple of nice wool ones that flattered at JCPenny. I also bought a couple of straw ones from a dress shop I worked at part time.

I would wear them if out in the sun, at Easter, in the winter, but it wasn't until I started covering my head for mass that I wore them a lot (that and living on the East Coast where it is considerably colder than Alabama).

Then I found Debby, and her little shop is where I've pretty much bought exclusively for the past few years. She's great.

One recommendation, don't go hat shopping alone. I actually refuse to buy hats without dh because he hates the only hat I ever bought without him. I still like it, but it isn't as much fun wearing stuff your husband doesn't like, imo. If your husband doesn't care, take a friend. Its more fun and easier to get another opinion.

My favorite style hat is a cloche. Doesn't feel as awkward as something bigger, doesn't flip off or create issues while sitting in the car, etc...

Make sure that it fits well. It is uncomfortable to wear a loose hat that doesn't stay put.

Jen, funny, I wear my hair up in a hat often (but soft around the face). Sometimes it is to help make a slightly large hat fit better. It depends on the hat.

You can also buy spacers to make a hat fit better. I keep meaning to take one of my hats in to the shop to see if she can help me make it a little tighter.

Good hats can be expensive, but I still have the ones I bought in college, so, they are over 10 years old and will last another 10 or more I'm sure. Its sort of like buying shoes, you get what you pay for. The only hats I've ever thrown away or stopped wearing have been cheap. Like anything else, though, if you buy off season, you can get some good deals.

Good thing, too, about hats not really being in fashion anymore is that you don't have any sort of fashion stigma attached. You can wear what suits you and not worry that it looks like its out of date--they all look out of date! Er, um, I'm mean retro.

I usually have the problem of finding a hat big enough.. and I also have the problem of having no where to shop in person.. at least not for the nice looking hats. I can get cute little one season hats at target or such.. good for wearing out at the pool and for swim meets etc.

If you'd like some eye-candy for inspiration, I ALWAYS fall IN LOVE with a hat from Eggcup Designs when I'm in the shop!

And then I generally settle on something "off the rack" and considerably less expensive.

But they are some STUNNING hats!

I have a huge head...I wear the same hat size as my husband does.

I was in the USSR on a trip (he could not go) many years ago and was shopping for a fur hat for him...you know, the kind with the ear flaps. The sales person haughtily informed me that I was trying on men's hats (in English, so I'd get it for sure) and I told her the hat was for my husband, not for me. She was shocked.

Can you guess that I'm not much of a hat person? I should be, though, because they are so good for protecting your scalp, face and eyes from the sun.

Some of the Eggcup Designs hats are really pretty, though - they remind me of the hats in the Betsy-Tacy books. (Now those were some fun hats! Reversible! Jaunty! Merry Widow!)

My husband looks at mens hats every time we go, but he's too cheap to special order a 7 3/4, lol. He'd rather buy them for me

A few other hat threads...

Do you wear a sun hat?

I need a hat. I don't like hats.

If you have a larger head, you may be able to pull off a larger hat. So, instead of going with something that frames your face, try something a bit broader. It might take more guts initially but the end result might be more flattering or to your liking. I remember trying on a bigger hat because one of my children liked it, and it did not look good on me, and she said that it was intended for a larger woman. I don't know that she necessarily meant "fat" but rather, if your head it really big, your face might be wider and well as your shoulders, etc... A bigger hat will work proportionally.

Where do you wear your hats? To the grocery store? Mass?

I love the idea of wearing hats, my older boys all wear fedoras and my 12yo daughter loves bucket hats, so maybe I'll take the plunge and get a few to wear. Our town already thinks we're weird, might as well give them something else to talk about.

anywhere.. I wear the fancy ones for dressing up.. so if I go somewhere I'm dressed up.. I'll wear a hat.

But for casual summer hats.. I wear them everywhere.. to the pool, the park, the store, the library, Mass.. a casual summer straw hat can look very pretty with a summer dress.

My family loves baseball caps...

Dh loves all hats, actually - he has Panama hats, a custom-made half-Panama, half-cowboy hat (!), Indiana Jones hats...

So something must be wrong with me, right?

(I dislike headphones, too, because they touch my head. Guess it's good I didn't try to apply for the astronaut program...or join the Navy...)

This may be a dumb question but is there any place women should not wear hats? Men take them off when inside; is there any certain protocol for women and hat wearing?

hmm intersting you should ask.. I have a very solid idea of what's proper but I don't know why.. so what I consider proper is..

Women should take off their hats if they're wearing a man's hat.. for instance ball caps.

If a woman is wearing a woman's hat.. then it's proper for her to continue wearing it inside or when standing for the National Anthem etc.

I need to wear sun hats here in AZ. I can't say I love them but they do the job of protecting my face! Now, if only I could get up the nerve to wear the hats I just saw in Easter Parade!

Jodie, your pic is so cute!

Ugh...I want verification. I was taught that a woman never has to remove her hat. Perhaps I should just stay in my ignorance    .

Love,

Well I found the info most easily at this site for reenactments..

I would put the caveat that if it's one of the pretty colored caps that are made for women to wear as part of their outfits it's different than a woman wearing a ballcap that a man could also pick up and use

A hat thread! My day is complete I was putting my baby to bed last night thinking, "I'm going to start a hat thread so Lindsay can tell us more about this." I would have responded last night but dh kept me up too long looking at the Eggcup hats--gorgeous!

I have two hats: a fleece winter hat (kind of a cross between a cloche and a bucket) and a summer soft paper hat (similar style). But the summer hat is all browns and since reading It's So You I don't wear brown anymore (you think I'm kidding ) so I'd love some other summer hats. I wear my current summer hat as a sun hat and I wear it almost everywhere. I've tried wearing it at Mass and felt funny. But I'm encouraged to try again and now I want nicer Sunday hats, too!

Now where to find some affordable ones.
