Over the weekend while in bed, I read Wind in the Willows for the first time. I loved it.
I couldn't help notice that Mole seemed to have many characteristics of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins....actually, very much like a Hobbit.

One of my all-time favorite books by Thomas B. Costain is "Silver Chalice". I can't believe I just saw it B&N tonight back in print!!! YAYY!!!! Forget the Davinci Code, this will really give you a great insight into the Early Church.

I just finished my 2nd to last of the Jane Austen novels -- Northanger Abbey. It was completely entertaining. And I had no idea it would be so funny! I found myself laughing out loud again and again.
I am only sad that there is only one more of her novels left to read now.

I have been reading a lot of different books lately but there is one in particular that I absolutely LOVE and highly recommend all parents to read!! It is called How to Really Love your Children by Ross Campbell. It is a small book and very simple but very very powerful book. The author describes just four simple things that we as parents can 'do' that communicate to children (of any love language) 'unconditional' love. This is a concept that I have found in my own life with five children not always an easy thing to do but with Dr. Ross Campbell these four simple actions are very doable!!! This book is going on my quarterly re-read list.
Blessings,
Leslie

I'm going to find that book Leslie. Jenn, I also think we will have to read Wind in the Willows, also for the first time.
Actually I came here because I finally finished a book..yeah!!
I doubt there has ever been a year before when it took me until the end of April to finish one book. I never had a nurser that wouldn't let me read before.
I re-read Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio: How I Raised 10 Children on 25 Words or Less for my book club and I laughed just as much as the first time and cried a little more this time. The pain of living with an alcoholic father came through a little more this time.
I also finished (hey if you're going to finish a book by April, might as well finish 2!) The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl. Now there is a little slice of Americana I had previously failed to appreciate. My mom has mentioned the inconveniences of the dust storms: stuffing the door jams with wet towels, cleaning and sweeping daily, etc. but we are a bit north of the actual dust bowl and down there (OK, TX, So. Kansas and Colo.) life was a living hell. I had no idea so many people lost their lives from "dust pneumonia." Animals succommed daily to "filling up with dirt." The author used diaries, newspaper accounts and other first hand documents to tell a really riveting story that was a quick read.
I'm only halfway done with Eats, Shoots and Leaves, but let me tell you, so far it is hilarious! If you are the kind of person who cringes to see "Carrot's, Tomato's, and Onion's on the sale sign at the market, then this book will have you rolling on the floor. I've been laughing so much I think I've almost convinced my teenage dc to read it, which of course would be a very sneaky yet effective "living English" assignment.

This morning I finished PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. It was my first time reading a Jane Austin novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I kept telling my dh, "Rachel needs to nurse" then I'd lie on the bed with the baby and my book! I wish we spoke to each other with such great manners here in my house. Maybe if I read more classic literature it will be reflected in MY way of speaking. I told my dh that we can have a drawing room in our new house (where we don't draw) and a dressing room and a library....
I also finished reading THE LION THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE with my ds 7. Now I'm going to borrow the Narnia DVD from my father. Unfortunately, he didn't purchase Pride and Prejudice. Do you thing the DVD is worth buying or would it be one to rent?

Buy it, buy it, buy it...but I say that because it's the one video we watch frequently, with all my siblings and their husbands. We love the BBC version of P&P. Don't buy any other version. Dh and I just watched the new movie and it was just pitiful. He pulled out the BBC version and started to watch it. Chick-flick or not, dh and my brothers-in-law all love it.

Hi Cheryl,
Keep reading her novels! They are so much fun.
I have to disagree with Jenn. Dh and I really enjoyed the recent movie. Now my girls love it. I intend to buy it at some point.
I saw the BBC version quite awhile ago. I'll have to check it out again now that I've read the book. Jenn, I'll let you know if I agree that it's way better than the new one!

I read that last year after suggestions from you all here. Dh and I rented the movie this past weekend. It was enjoyable. The way they made the mom a narrator and had her speaking directly to the audience at times was rather strange, but the movie was faithful to the book, all in all.
Boy, was I inspired by the portrayal of Evelyn Ryan to be a more joyful and more patient mom!

Really??!!! I'm quite surprised! I thought it was okay, but no contest to the BBC. I thought there was too much of American and modern mannerisms. Elizabeth slouched too much, too casual, and modern teenagerish. And I so love Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy...no one can replace him.

I LOVE the BBc version of P&P. I agree with Jenn that Colin Firth is great as Mr. Darcy. As a final date night (after kids are in bed) with dh before he deploys, we are going to watch the new one. I'll let you know what I think. I've been so hesitant, but dh wants to watch it with me.

Guess what! My library has both versions of P & P on DVD. I'll watch them both and see which one I like better.

Ok, I have to agree about the mannerisms (not to mention things about the clothing and hairstyles) that seemed too modern or not quite right for the period or Austen. And I also have to be honest in saying that I have a terrible memories for movies I've seen. It's as if my mind is a sieve. So I really do have to see the BBC version again before I can tell you whether I think it is way better.
But I do think the new one is good. I enjoyed some of the characters very much. I loved Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennnet, especially in his relationship with Elizabeth and at the end: "If any other men happen to come for Mary or Kitty, send them in. I am quite at my leisure!"

I'm starting Mommy Wars this week for my book club. I'm the only mother and the scheduled day to discuss is Mother's Day. I'm wondering what they'll say since for now they're all worker bees.
I've only read a few essays so far and have decided that I am a super judgmental snot (unfortunately not a revelation), but I just do not get wanting to work and have kids. I guess my vocation truly is as just a stay at home, not a part-time or full-time something even from home. That's fine with me, and it's interesting to see the other side. And I'm having intereesting conversations with myself about "is every mothering choice ok?" and "does the world need to be 'changed' by having mothers in the workforce?"

I'm more judgmental than you. It's a shame they are having it on Mother's Day. Rachel, just bring your nursing sweet baby and be your cheerful self. Your inner and outer beauty will speak volumes....I think you are one of the most beautiful, cool, hip, moms of six children I have ever met.

Thanks, Jenn! I'm hoping they'll change the date. I would definitely breastfeed there, but I want to spend the day with all my kids, and they schedule the club Sun mornings (sadly during Mass so that we have to go on Sat) as opposed to the afternoon which would be naptime when they wouldn't miss me.

I know my absence has been obvious.........as I have been asked where I am...
and I still only have a few seconds.....not even
but, I finally finished last week:
The Five Love Languages of Teenagers
by Gary Chapman
It was wonderfully insightful! I think we should all read this if we have teens, or just before we have teens. It is really helpful to parents, in learning to adjust our parenting skills, from children to budding adults.
MOLLY and JANE........I highly recommend you ladies read this book, asap..........I think it will help YOU, and maybe even those young men of yours. My three older teens do not give much grief or any.......but my next teen, just 11 yesterday, may be the one
I am already applying some of his advice and she is much more easy to interact with.....well, most of the time!
anyway.........the book was due today, and I wanted to get it on the list, while I remembered
now....off to see the children perform in four plays in the next 30 hours! Opening night went well last night......phew!
I am less than 200 pages from finishing Middlemarch ....yea!
So, anyone finish any books in the last month......besides those already posted???
love,
