I think I'm sold on my original Mary Jane's but now I want Jodie's Merrell boots, too. Hmm. Since I have some clogs the boots are probably the more sensible purchase for this year.

I have Sanitas that I bought at this store which carries Sanita factory seconds. They have minor cosmetic flaws (that I couldn't really identify) and the prices are great. The site also carries a lot of other European and high quality, supportive shoes. Footprints

My new favorite shoes are MBTs and Sketchers Shape Ups. They have replaced Dansko in my heart. Yes, they are a little different-looking, but once you walk in them for a bit, the blissful, cushy comfort will make you think they are the most beautiful shoes ever created. Really. I have plantar fasciitis and I have not found a shoe that I could wear all day and walk long distances in and have NO pain, before I tried these shoes(and I've tried so many--Dansko, New Balance, Crocs RX, etc.). They are pricey, but FootwearEtc.com has great sales, free shipping, and free returns on certain brands. Here is a link to the different Mary Janes they carry.

I'm on the hunt for Mary Jane's too! This is perfect timing for me. But I want Mary Jane's that are backless, like a birkenstock.
I have a question, though. If you are wearing a denim skirt, what color tights and shoes would you wear? And what if the skirt is khaki colored? And does it matter what color one's top is? I find it much more difficult to figure out what looks good with winter skirts than with a pair of jeans.

I match the color of my tights to the skirt...but I try to keep the shoe and skirt in the same color family. I have A LOT of chocolate brown skirts and some denim and some khaki. My shoes are all dark chocolate brown. So, most of my tights are chocolate brown. I know you've mentioned you're pretty tall, Books, but I found a great selection of tights at Target - nice chocolate browns, black, gray, tan/khaki, smokey gray/blue (which goes great with denim, btw!) I wear tannish/khaki tights with my khaki skirts in the winter, and I wear those smokey gray/blue ones with my denim skirts. If I'm wearing brown boots I always wear dark brown tights underneath.
The same applies if you usually wear black, except, I think gray tights look great with black shoes and skirts as well!

So if you wear gray/blue tights with a denim skirt, you still wear brown shoes?
And if you wear a khaki, you wear a tann-ish tight with brown shoes, too?
I bought some of those tights at Target last week! lol Except I checked two different Targets and brown was sold out in both.
I have black boots that I love (an old Lands End style that is no longer sold), but I don't have brown shoes, so I was thinking of getting brown mary janes. But someone told me that brown would look bad with a denim skirt because the tights should be matched to the shoe. I don't know whether to believe her or not.
I started looking around at other women in skirts, people watching, to see what's common? What I've seen is absolutely everything under the sun! I don't know if that means that most Americans have no sense of color and style or if its really just fine to do whatever I want!

Lindsay - thanks for that link!!! Those are really great prices!
I have a question, ladies - I prefer Mary Janes for the fit and security on the foot, but I've often debated over a pair of clogs - like this. Does anyone wear these regularly? I understand they're NOT supposed to fit tight on the foot, that there is some up and down of the shoe as you're walking. Is this true? Does it bother you? Is it just something to get used to, but you really enjoy the comfort of the shoe? Is it secure on your foot - could you lurch across the hall to grab your toddler before she climbs on the back of the couch without flinging your shoes through the air? Anyone wear these regularly? Do they look weird with a skirt? I could see how they'd be cute with a pair of jeans, but are they too clunky with a skirt? And...could I possibly fit one more question into this paragraph?

Jen, I am the type who would go shoeless if it was doable. I pretty much only wear backless shoes except for boots. Up and down on a shoe doesn't bother me at all and I don't end up tripping over myself when chasing a child. That said, I think that if the shoe comes too high up the front of your foot, it doesn't look as nice with skirts. These seem like they would come up really high and might not look as good as something with a little bit lower rise. They would look fabulous with jeans. Sigh...it seems like the cutest shoes always look best with jeans. Frustrating when wanting to find something that looks nice with skirts.

i don't have those but i have these which are similar. i don't wear them anymore "regularly" but i did earlier this year. wore them everywhere for about 3 months (including some days when i wore them for 12 hours straight, walking on cobblestones and streets), alternating with another shoe (Rockport Agostina in really buttery leather, not available anymore). prior to that i wore them almost every weekend for a couple of hours. it did take quite a bit of getting used to, my shoes before were nothing like them. my backaches disappeared (i used to get them if i walked anywhere for a long time) but with any shoe my feet (and probably yours) are bound to hurt after 12 hours. i love them now. i don't think they look weird with a skirt and dark colored tights, but i wouldn't wear them bare or with a skin-colored stocking. they're secure enough on my foot, i think. but then i'm not (yet again) running after a toddler. soon though

My Sanita Mary Jane is essentially a clog that looks like a Mary Jane. Like Susan expressed, the only complaint I have with a clog is its height. Occasionally, I will sort of fall off of it, but I am a HUGE klutz capable of tripping when barefoot over myself; so, I've never faulted the shoe. However, the height is a nice feature in slushy wintertime and has kept me from *needing* a boot (though, not kept me from *wanting* a boot!)since I don't have issues with snow getting inside my shoe (though, I'm a city dweller and rarely treck through snow that has not been shoveled).
I wear a Birkenstock sandal all summer long, and wearing a clog feels much like that. Can you wear a backless sandal without feeling like you are going to lose it everytime you make a sudden move? Then you will probably be fine with a clog. I needed the space in the toe since I suffer from chilblains. I do everything in my clog, though, from walks to church, and I only have two pairs of winter shoes atm, the black clog Mary Janes and a pair of brown LLBean ones (which are nice but definitely more like a dress shoe and not especially comfy for the long haul, though, I accidentally went to farm day in them a couple of weeks ago and my feet were tired but not in agony).
I have a pair of black wool leg warmers from Vermont Country that I wear with the clogs for added warmth on those days I would prefer boots. Again, I have chilblains, so while I don't think I look silly, I'm not really worried if I do, so, I haven't given it much thought. Wool legwarmers I like to think it gives the look of a tall boot, though. I also wear them at home with my slippers as the weather gets chilly and we try to save on our heating by keeping it low.
And, Books, I like grey tights with black or brown shoes, and I have chocolate and white tights (or over the knee socks) I wear with brown shoes. I pair both with khaki depending on my top. I might pair khaki with brown if I'm wearing softer colors or with black if I'm wearing a bolder color. That's the beauty of khaki. A dark brown skirt is okay with grey tights and brown shoes (especially if that is what is clean ), but generally, with dark brown or black, I got with brown/brown or black/black with grey long socks being the wild card.
Actually, for much of winter, I wear black wool socks with black wool legwarmers and a long skirt. I have some wool long underwear shorts that I pair with this on colder days. I try to keep my feet warm, and sometimes, tights just don't cut it.

I have two pairs of the Dansko you linked (black and brown.) I have worn them exclusively for almost 8 years (same pairs). I have been pregnant in them, chased many toddler boys and done three relocation's with them. I have never lost one while wearing them and feel they give good support. The only draw back...and I hate to mention this because it could just be me and my weak ankles...is that I do role my ankles at times. I have never actually hurt my ankle in the process, but just looked kind of stupid as I trip over my self . I wear these shoes primarily with tights and longer skirts.
For the summer I have Dansko Merrie Clogs in black and brown. These are equal in comfort to the closed back clogs, IMO, but are more appropriate to wear with out socks in the summer.
There's my 2cents,
Betsy

Well, I like the clog, but I think I'm finally settling on a happy medium between the clog and my favorite Mary Jane for the winter. Here's what I'm leaning toward - the Sanita Marcelle (btw, I had no idea that Sanita and Dansko were basically the same shoe.)
I really want a pair of good boots!!! But, I think I'll wait. I need something practical for winter with a closed back, and I do have the "look-so-good....feel-so-bad" 9West brown boots which look great with a long brown skirt for church, but definitely aren't walking boots!!!! But, truly - the only reason I could justify them is warmth - it's not like we get a whole lot of snow in Alabama! It does get pretty cold here, though. I stay fairly warm in my tights and silk long underwear though. So, I'm thinkin' warm, practical winter shoes this year. Last year I wore tights with my Dansko open-back Mary Janes and that was a little chilly.
Thanks for letting me tag along on your thread, Susan!

Jen, the Marcelle shoes are sooooooo cute! I love them. If I wasn't so tall, I could wear shoes like that. As it is, I aim for 1/2 inch or less heel height. Its just not fun to tower over others.
Lindsay, those leg warmers look really nice. I have wondered how they would look under skirts. I wore leg warmers with jeans and clogs in the 80's, but I have seen them in the stores again recently. Are they a fashion item that has come and gone...and come back again?
Here is what I settled on. I tried these on at a store recently in a different color, and they were super cute with a long skirt. I live in Birks over the summer and I like that they last practically forever. Now I just have to figure out which shoes go with which tights and skirts!

I have a pair of black leg warmers that I wear under skirts in the winter all the time....you can't even tell I'm wearing them, as my skirts are all a-line or full .
And, YES...all things 80's are back in style. I saw leg warmers all over the place last week while shopping....AND......STIRRUP PANTS in JCPenney!!!!!!!

I KNOW!!!!! Big hair and tapered pants. Have mercy!
But, I do love the leg warmer idea under a skirt! I might have to try that on a super cold day!
Have you girls ever noticed how giddy we get talking shoes? I mean this thread could seriously go on for another 4 pages and I wouldn't be surprised! So, come to us, oh, shoeless masses....and we will match you with an appropriately styled European shoe that complements your wardrobe!

Yes...but they're a dark brown so it isn't obvious. I have some foot issues that require a snug fit and a roomy toe box...which invariably means a well made European shoe....which means $$....which means I have one good pair per season. That doesn't leave a lot of choice each day - which is sort of freeing in a way. I try to choose something that is practical and will look nice with a lot.

I don't think so at all. There are two basic neutrals - brown or black. Most people gravitate towards one or the other to anchor their wardrobe. I happen to think that both brown and black shoes pair well with khaki, denim, and dark brown.
I don't generally match tights to the shoe either - I match to the skirt generally because I think a longer, unbroken line of color is graceful on a lady.

Too funny. Those things really are not attractive, although I bet they would work great with boots under a full skirt in the winter...hmmmmm...
