I know, I saw that! Thanks to this thread, my eighth grader is going to do OYAN this year, and is jazzed. This seems like a great time to do something like this -- working at structuring, extending, and revising his writing will only help the more formal, expository writing we'll do later.
We got the free DVD, and I was very impressed. Can't wait!

I am thrilled with the idea of using this program with my children and I have full intentions of getting it provided the Prisoner of Zelda book is not required reading. Can someone please tell me if it is or not? Thanks!

It's The Prisoner of Zenda, an 1894 adventure novel by Anthony Hope, if that makes any difference. Not Zelda, which is -- something else, I understand.

Not that I can see. My son read it, and I confess I didn't pre-read it, but I think it's just an old-fashioned adventure kind of story. From the tone of the overall curriculum, I can't imagine their selecting an inappropriate novel as their centerpiece, and even though it's not a Catholic curriculum, my background research on P of Z didn't turn up any kind of red-flag anti-Catholicism issues.
There is a video game called Prisoner of Zelda, which I don't know that much about, but it's not at all the same thing as the book in question.
The OYAN program has been lots of fun for my son. I've been very hands-off about it, just checking his workbook occasionally to make sure he understood what he was being asked to do. He got slowed down a bit this semester, because all his energy was directed towards another writing-intensive class he was taking, but now that that's over, he's concentrating heavily on finishing his novel. I'd bought OYAN as a way of getting him to think about structuring and preparing a piece of writing, as well as sustaining a longer project, and it's been great for that. It's also made him a more observant and analytical reader of fiction, from a writerly perspective.
Many thumbs up! Highly recommended! And while you could do it any time from middle school onwards, I really do think it's a great "bridge," for a 7th- or 8th-grader, from more juvenile writing to the longer, more structured, and more analytical writing that you'd expect of a high-schooler.

Ok - I didn't know about the video game, so wondered what the concern was. Yes, if the title was Prisoner of Zelda, I'd be worried too 
I've just ordered the free DVD to see what it's all about. My son is still a bit too young for it himself (he just turned 8), but it's nice to look ahead and know the options. I bet he'd be into something like this my middle school!

Jackie, two kids can definitely use the curriculum at once. You will probably need to order an extra workbook, but they can share the text and the novel and both can watch the videos together. My two oldest have been slowly working their way through OYAN on their own, as well as his new science fiction curriculum. I don't actually have anything to do with this. I leave them alone and they work through on their own. I think Daniel S. is a very good teacher, and I think their writing has improved in other genres (not just fiction) from working through the OYAN. He also does teach a fair bit of literary analysis, which spills over into our discussions of other books.
There's nothing inappropriate as far as I can tell, and I would agree with Sally that I think it's great to start around 7-8th grade. My kids have been taking more than a year to get through it, but then it's not really "school" for us -- as in, I don't require it. But I really do think that it's one of the best purchases we've ever made in our homeschool, ever.
