My mom always used to say...
"He who messeth cleaneth up!"
It usually had to do with washing up the kitchen after making chocolate chip cookies...

Oh, and this is helpful for uncharitable talk
"What pops into your head, doesn't always need to be said."
I find myself using that alot lately

We use this one, from Mary Poppins, when kids start to argue with, "but mom..." or "but dad...":
Goats butt, birds fly, and children who get their feet wet must learn to take their medicine (said with a british accent, it's sure to get a laugh around here)
And I'm always saying this:
Don't put it down. Put it away. But I can't say that it works very effectively.

I was just over at Pinewood Castle reading about Circle Time, and I remembered using this one a lot a couple years ago......
Criss-cross-applesauce.
When you want kids to sit down on the floor and pay attention.
Reviving this again......anyone else??? I love these and have been using a few more new ones.......they really help me to detach from the chaos, and move things along in an unemotional fashion

Not exactly a "poetic gem," but we came up with some seat belt buckling songs to keep me from losing my cool when kids are being pokey. I don't think they help the kids buckle any faster, because they all STOP to sing the song but at least it makes ME happier:
To the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb":
Sit down and buckle up!
Buckle up!
Buckle up!
Sit down and buckle up
so we can drive away!
To the tune of "London Bridge Is Falling Down":
Take the seatbelt, buckle up, buckle up buckle up
Take the seatbelt buckle up, my fair ladies!
(that one only works because my bucklers are all girls right now! )

So glad you bumped this thread, Lara! It's one of my favorites!
Buckle up buttercup
Expressed to those that would like to whine, complain and shirk responsibilities. Expressed to myself at times as a self-motivational tool...I feel whiny, and like having a pity party for myself...nope! I just tell myself to BUCKLE UP BUTTERCUP! Sometimes, you just gotta do what ya gotta do!!! It's taken from a Carnival Cruise Line commercial - do any of you remember it??

I was just thinking about this thread yesterday! My boys are working (yet another time ) on the habit of hanging up their clothes, and I came up with a catchy rhyme about clothes on the floor. Right away, I thought--"I should add that to the thread with the catchy discipline sayings"...but now I've FORGOTTEN IT!!! See, ladies, this is what happens when you go over the homeschooling hill! Anyway, love this thread!

I think I can add more too.. I would often tell the kids that "I need a nose count" And while I do mean literally I need a check that all the kids are present.. I'll also make it silly some of the time.. and ask everyone if they have noses. Or ask how many noses are in the van.
And then I've had a few 2-4 yr old that were very good at slipping out.. so that if I couldn't lay eyes on them within a minute in the house/backyard.. I'll hollar out "*childsname* check" and all the older kids will split up and we'll have some hit the front yard and check from the street back to the house while a couple of others will help hunt through the house and backyard... That let's us find them fast if they did get out front but also gives us time to do a decent search inside. (and we've done tons of things to stop their getting out.. like plywood over the cross beams on the back yard fence so they couldn't climb up the beam and over the fence)

Remember it? I say it ALL. THE. TIME. Often the way you use it, but mostly to my children in the car .... who almost 2 years after this thread was started, STILL wander around in the car instead of buckling up, like they have never gone anywhere with me before.

When my kids are all being wild or just not listening I say something liked "Hmm, looks like I need some pooper scoopers". (The pooper scooper has to clean up any dog messes in the yard.) It usually brings instant calmness to our day! (If not, it brings a cleaned up yard. )
Also, Amy, regarding the seatbelts, our neighbor always says "click it or ticket". If a child is a multiple offender they get a ticket and have to pay mom a certain amount of money.

I'm sorry Becky, I realize how unclear I was. My children are always belted before we go anywhere, they just take for.e.ver. to sit down and buckle up, they argue over helping one another, 3yo hides in the back of the van...
