AWESOME! I'm totally psyched that your son is homeschooling as my sons are here too!
Wow 6'2" PERFECT! Sounds like my Ian, talk and lanky :) I always say, "Never underestimate the skinny kid" because he'll throw the heat right past you!
My oldest is no longer with the high school he was playing with the last 2 years. He may have to sit out this year but will practice then play with our local high school. It's not D1 but these guys love him as they played Little League together. It means a lot to have your team mates rooting for you.
Aiden is eligible for recruiting, as of a few days ago, & hopes to play with a scout time soon. Won't mention the name until that's official. So like Valerie listed, my kid is working his tail off...and loving it.
And darn it, for this mother's heart, his current club team has him pitching again (as does the local high school). He is definitely crafty but it about gives me a heart attack! So mainly he's middle infielder at 5' 10" but still growing!
So glad to be in this together!
Baseball moms, chime in ANYTIME please!
Less than 100 days until MLB opening day .
Love,

Sorry I missed this in the summer, Kim! We've been involved with club ball for 5 years. It is worth every effort, penny, frustration. The key is to find a good fit, where the player isn't the best or worst on the team and that the team functions well as a whole. I will gladly answer any specific questions.
Love,

It's that time again. Spring Training has begun!
Anyone else getting excited about the upcoming movie 42 - the movie about Jackie Robinson? The trailers look awesome, Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey, relative newcomer Chadwick Boseman as Robinson.
We are anxiously awaiting the April 12 release (right before Jackie Robinson Day in MLB).

Mary, thanks for pointing this out I hadn't heard yet about this movie. My boys love JR. When my oldest boys were little this was their favorite song!. We listened to Baseball: The American Epic a thousand times! It's actually funny, because of this CD they are more familiar with Hank Aaron and JR then they are with modern players!
Oh, and tryouts are this weekend! We are excited!!!!!!!

We're ALL OVER it, Mary! I'm very curious to see how they handle JR in his later years...he became more of a tragic figure as he aged, in my mind. I hope the portrayal is complex.
Where are we?
Dbacks spring training games start Saturday agains the Rockies (booooo)
Ian's club ball continuing through June. Tourney this weekend.
Aiden starts high school ball Tuesday. Had a scrimmage last night and did great starting at short. They lost 8-7. Not bad!
World Classic starts March 7.
JP starts Little League soon. He got "drafted" by his fave coach :)
We have our Dback home opener tickets.
There's probably more, but I'll stop there
Best wishes, Betsy!
Love,

Any new baseball moms out there? Be sure to check out Val's great news here.
Our update:
Aiden (jr in hs - varsity) played awesome defense in team's 1st game 5-5 at 2nd. Didn't bat (long story) AND he got a Bryce Harper haircut
Ian's club team came in 2nd in last weekend's tourney. We pulled in some of his former teammates to fill in for guys who were down with the flu. Ian did really well and had an extra good time.
JP starts Little League practice this Saturday. He was "drafted" by his favorite coach and will be playing with some of his best buddies.
Awwwww I love spring ...when everything is fresh and new and I'm not too exhausted yet
Love,

All my boys got drafted and they have awesome coaches! My boys just have "mom's" haircut...which, surprisingly, looks better than Bryce's!
Baseball is in full swing and I am excited too!
I have plans in my head to make some custom baseball earrings for the season now that I know their teams and numbers (#19, #29, #39)....

We haven't started baseball yet, but it's close. We are so relieved that our son will have the same coach as last year, and with my dh as his assistant. We don't have any friends in his age group (9) so we've had to forge ahead on our own.
I'm mentally preparing for the knitting projects to keep me occupied....

Well my "boys" went to see 42 tonight - to celebrate Jackie Robinson Day. They said is was one of the best baseball movies they have ever seen. A good friend of mine saw it with her husband this weekend and said what she was most surprised by was the beautiful portrayal of their marriage - something she hadn't expected or known about.

MaryM,
My 12.5 yo really wants to go, but dh heard that it was better suited for teens and up. What is your boys opinion, okay for baseball lovin' pre-teens?

I asked my husband about it as he had taken our 13.5 yo son. I had checked the review from Kids in Mind and he says that is a really accurate representation of what is in the movie in detail. By virtue of being a youngest child with much older brothers this young teen is more "worldly" than they were at that age which means different levels of okay in different families for a young teen/pre-teen. There is nothing explicit in the movie but it does address the topic of adultery (by a coach). My husband said that the hatred and bigotry toward Robinson is hard to watch but makes the movie powerful. Hope that helps.

Both my teens were disappointed in the movie . We haven't had much time to discuss the matter but it sounds like they were expecting one thing and got another thing. They are so well versed on the Jackie Robinson story...and so particular about baseball...and movies...sigh. I'll wait to see it on DVD likely because my calendar is pretty booked through June 8th :)
Oh, they LOVE the commercial :)
Love,

Angie,
Do report back what your boys impression was, I am interested. I am thinking that we will be seeing this on DVD. But, I am considering a Father/Son trip to the theater if I get enough feed back to know he will do well with the movie.

Betsy, if I can get my teen sons to stand still for 3 seconds, I'll ask! They told me to definitely wait until DVD - but they know I prefer to watch movies in my cozy home.
Amazon's Gold Box offer is Ken Burn's Baseball for $38 or I just noticed it is a free Prime Instant Video :)

According to 14yo:
"I thought it was a good movie, but it wasn't the best movie I've ever seen. It was all about the racial problems. There wasn't actual baseball playing in it. Branch Ricky was by far the best character. There was a lot about his wife, not a bad thing but, actual baseball was minimized. I was expecting more baseball. Something was missing that I can't put my finger on. They could have made the way he fought back come across better, cooler."
According to 17yo:
"I went in with too high expectations. I knew it was going to be very political but they added weird stuff. They made a huge story of his wife. The main problem is that there wasn't enough baseball in it."
When pressed further to talk about their favorite baseball movies, the truth is, there is no perfect baseball movie - just the hope of the perfect baseball movie. They want the one that perfectly balances a human story with the grip of the game. That IS a super high expectation.
Plus, my sons deal with the implications of race day in and day out, on and off the field, so they have a very nuanced perspective on race. They are saturated.
Love,

Isn't that the truth!
Thanks for the feed back Angie. BTW, very nice narrations by your ds's! I was afraid that you were going to say that it lacked enough baseball. I am thinking that my son will be disappointed without a lot of actual baseball in the movie. I am sure he will be expecting a movie more like the Miracle about the 1980's gold medal Hockey team.

EXACTLY! Gosh, we haven't seen that movie in some time - will need to do so :)
Maybe a movie about the 2001 Dbacks World Series win?!
