Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Here's another great resource for modest clothing -- Simple Yet Beautiful is run by a Catholic homeschooled girl (well, she's finished now -- she's 20 I think -- and one of 11 children). Anyway, she'll custom make jumpers, skirts, dresses, bloomers etc for littles to big, maternity and nursing styles included. She does a great job and her prices are very reasonable.

She doesn't have a website yet, but her contact info is: Patricia Lober, Simple Yet Beautiful, 459 S. Ethlyn Rd., Moscow Mills, MO 63362-3111. Or you can contact her by email to obtain her catalog and fabric swatches: Lober Family <lobers@surfbest.net>

She also gives a discount to large families

Hope this helps.

Blessings,

I already bought two of them!    I was thinking of buying a suit for $50 at Lands End on clearance and then ran into those at Costco for $22. Boy was I excited! Of course, now I run the risk of seeing a handful of other women at the pool this summer with the same suits. That's the price I pay for shopping at Costco.

I bought Katie an adorable dress at Costco last spring. One Sunday we counted six little girls in church wearing the same dress!

Was it one of those seersucker dresses? With the matching diaper cover? I always buy a bunch of them. Sometimes I can get one for each of the two younger girls so they match.

We'll all have to buy Costco dresses for our girls this summer and then exchange pictures. We'll see how many of us have the same one.

Kim and I had another one of those hoppity-hop rabbit trail conversations this morning and she told me about the way Mormons discern what is modest. They wear garments under their clothes which must remain covered at all times. Since the garments are short-sleeved, and to the knee, that leaves little ambiguity. It seems a reasonable measure of modesty, though it does not exclude pants for a woman's wardrobe. And, men wear garments too--no bare-chested Mormon men allowed. I found an interesting article which explains the garment. This modesty thread is beomcing one of comparative religions Tomorrow, Muslim women?

Elizabeth you lucky thing, I'll have to get over to Costco soon. Laura Ashley dresses at that price were a steal.

Just as an FYI I ordered two jumpers and an apron from the touch of elegance website someone recommended. I ended up having a nice little e-mail correspondence with the lady who owns it and as a result she joined this forum The dresses came today and they are really lovely. Nicely made with great details. Considering the quality they were very inexpensive.

I think this is one thing that has held me back from wearing more skirts on a daily basis. I have worn mostly tennis shoes (well, technically walking shoes, but in the South, they're all "tennis shoes") most of my life. I have very wide feet, and have had 2 surgeries already for bunions, with another looming ahead. I already have arthritis in one foot from the abnormal shape the bones were in for years. I find it very difficult to wear anything else for extended periods of time without aching feet. In my job (2 days a week, I'm a veterinarian) I wear very low comfortable shoes, either Naturalizer or similar that I order from special catalogs for wide or narrow feet. However, I'm on my feet from 8 am to 6 pm on those days, and when I come home, my feet are killing me. If I wore skirts on my off days, and similar shoes, I can't imagine what my feet would feel like. It's such a relief when I get off to change into tennis shoes! But the look of athletic shoes with most dresses or skirts does not "speak to me' as someone said. I do like my Birkenstocks in the summer, but again, the look with dresses, socks, etc. is not me.

Since you kicked this topic to the top again, Mary, I thought I'd write about an encouraging experience this past weekend. We took our girls on their first-ever trip to an amusement park. Our destination was Hersheypark in Hershey, PA. I was so excited to read large, clearly printed signs at the park entrance entitled "Attire". I found a copy of the content of the sign on their website. In part, the signs reads:

"As a courtesy to others, modest dress is expected of all guests, and revealing or offensive clothes are not considered appropriate. Bikini tops, bikini bottoms, Speedo bikinis, thongs, and brief halter tops are not considered appropriate attire while in the Park. While in our water zone area . . . swimsuits may be worn, but after completion of these rides, we ask that you change to more appropriate attire (i.e. shorts, shirt) prior to leaving this area. Some language, gestures, and suggestive art on apparel may also be considered inappropriate. HERSHEYPARK reserves the right to address these issues with all guests. Your cooperation is appreciated."

Isn't this amazing? In the Chocolate World tour that shows how chocolate is made, I learned that Milton Hershey grew up Mennonite and married a Catholic. (Actually, I surmised that since a sign stated that he and this wife were married in the rectory of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City.) I am thinking that the board of directors of the amusement park must still be made up of Christians. How refreshing!

(And, yes, the entire town of Hershey does smell like chocolate! I think I would weigh about 800 pounds if I lived there!)

Ah but it's wonderful isn't it? They make Twizzlers (a Hershey product) near us here and many evenings I can smell them. Yummy!

We do so love our Hershey's chocolate here. We keep a stash in the freezer at all times.

God bless from Lancaster PA . . . 40 min. from Hershey.

Michaella just found this same link the other day. Click on the Seperates link for Juniors and Misses.   We ended up finding very similar "board" seperates at Mervyn's a couple of weeks ago for 50% off. She was so thrilled to be able to swim in a top that comes all the way up to her neck!

I went to the rec center to pick up a child and the last 2 women I saw come out of the dressing room had versions of the same thing: swim shorts with a boarding top or a beautiful tank top with high neckline and full mid-thigh skirt. That's hopeful.

I started wearing a veil to Mass at the funeral Mass (not sure if that is the right title for it) our Bishop said for JPII. I have found that even if I have been wearing jeans for things during the day, I change into a skirt or dress before going to daily Mass. I have a hard time envisioning myself in a veil and pants - anyone else have that happen to them?

Also wanted to mention two other things about the veil. I found the greatest quote I sent to my Mom, who is not infavor of wearing one.   "A woman should not wear a veil on her head until she wears one on her heart". So far this has helped "table" the issue with her.

This weekend, we had diaconate discernment classes and I always wear a veil for Mass. Not unusual or odd to anyone there. When we went back to the chapel for evening prayers at the end of the day, we walked in and there was Christ - the class of 2007 was there in Adoration. My veil was in the car! At first, dh commented "no worries - you didn't know", but on the way home, he said he was sitting there in Adoration and started thinking about the man who tried to catch the tabrenacle and was instantly killed because he wasn't supposed to touch it. He told me to go ahead and get a second veil to keep with me at all times.

In Christ,
Becki

Becki,
Thanks for pulling up this old thread, or I may never have come across it!
I am enjoying reading them all immensely.
I go back and forth on the pants thing, but I always wear a dress or skirt to church.
I wore only dresses for about 2 years straight, but my husband does like for me to wear pants sometimes. BUT this may be that I tend to dress frumpy which it seems Mrs. Hammond frowns upon (as she should!)
My favorite is jean jumpers...I could live in those, but I suppose if I had some nice skirts then my dh would like that better.
I used to also cover all the time. I was what you would call an Amish Catholic!
Now I only cover for church, but it is not uncomfortable for me because we attend a Tridentine Rite church and so all the ladies cover.
And yes,now that you mention it, it does feel odd to wear your mantilla with pants on!

Hi,

I am new here. A friend sent me a link to this thread because we were talking about this yesterday. I have not had a chance to read all of the messages, but I wanted to let everyone know that Colleen Hammond moderates a Yahoo! group called Dressing with Dignity. There are very few members, but I think it would be great if more joined so that there could be more discussion. I recently finished the book and am struggling alot with what she says in the book. I dress modestly but not necessarily femininly. Anyway, I won't get into much now, I hope to read through the messages and see what everyone has to say here.

I thought I'd resurrect this great thread as I was just made aware of this modest fashion show for young girls. I believe it is sponsored by the Challenge Clubs which is an outreach of the Legionnaires of Christ...

I may take my two oldest daughters to the show in Dallas, but tickets are expensive ($35 each!). Has anyone out there attended one of these shows?
