Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone read either or both of these two books?

Shoes of Satin, Ribbons of Silk: Tales from the Ballet by Antonia Barber or Hannibal and the King by Emily Quintero-Spongberg

I am looking at joining the Conservative Book Club and thinking of getting them but I want some others' opinions.

Thanks!

Has anyone else read John, Paul, George & Ben by Lane Smith? Very irreverent treatment of our Founding Fathers, but great if you need a laugh... I'm still chuckling about it, and we returned it to the library weeks ago.

I definitely don't recommend Smith's new Science Verse, however.

I'm sure some of you have read The Quiltmaker's Gift by Jeff Brumbeau but there is a prequel called The Quiltmaker's Journey which we just read this weekend and think is just as good. It made us go back and re-read the gift one again, too. And, since I had just recently told the kids I'd teach them to make some quilts, they fit right in. Our first quilt will be for Project Linus or another similar organization, to follow in the Quiltmaker's footsteps a bit.

Thanks, ladies, for all your wonderful suggestions! We've read some wonderful books from your recommendations. So I thought I should add a few that we've read recently and loved:

Mockingbird By Allan Ahlberg. It's the song set to pictures at the turn of the century. The words have been changed a bit; the family is buying presents for baby's first birthday. My kids love to sing the words and look at the pictures of the "olden days". It's a sweet book... similar time period as Fanny in the Kitchen

Clams All Year By Maryann Cocca-Leffler... Two families share a summer house and Grandpa teaches the kids how to go clamming. This one has great pictures and could be used in a FIAR type study

She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain   Philemon Sturges
Another great song set to pictures. The theme is southwestern- very cute and lively. Also, you get to find out who "she" is

Speaking of Fanny...........

A connection! I came here to post a book we read today from the library........and the last post mentions the other book written by these two authors

The title is Apples to Oregon by Deborah Hopkinson and Nancy Carpenter. The pictures are gorgeous........and the story sweet and funny! All the kids in this family loved it.......and the mama, too!

Worth owning!

It's great you mentioned it. Apples to Oregon is a favorite of ours, too, Chari! It's a very fun book with lots of possible rabbit trails. I had a great time putting together a unit study on it for Homeschool Share.

Just yesterday we found a similar, very engaging and humorous picture book with a historical traveling link - Hog Music. It provides history of both the National Public Road and early postal delivery all as part of a whimsical children's story.

Great literature study, Mary!

You KNOW how I like to do things around here............find a book and trail after it!

Me and my K-er are about to start pumpkin books..........our apple study went very well. We even grew 8 great pumpkins in our own garden......the kids love it........one for each member of our family!

Thanks for all of your work, Mary! We appreciate it!

I've just bought an interesting book Baseball Saved Usabout a young Japanese-American boy in an internment camp in America during WW2. The book focuses on the baseball diamond that gave the internees a purpose in life and a way of passing the time. Then it follows the young boy's return home and how his baseball helps him to be re-accepted after the war. Very thought provoking.

Many thanks to Beate. Your post about Weaving the Rainbow opened my eyes to a treasure that was sitting in my own house! We often receive a bundle of books from a relative who works for a publisher. They are often a mixed bag, and when I see lots of character books and tv-linked books, I put the bag aside. When I read your post, the title rang a bell. Lo and behold, there between Bob and Dora was this treasure! Thrilling! Thanks so much!

Also, I would like to recommend Love Is... by Wendy Anderson Halperin. It is a gorgeously illustrated picture book based on the text of 1 Corinthians 13. She has illustrated books by Cynthia Rylant and Jim Aylesworth. The illustrations are "many alternating scenes that either epitomize or contrast with Paul's description in 1 Corinthians." My 5 year old and I have found much to discuss in the amazingly detailed pictures.

Sorry for the lack of form...haven't been able to figure out italics, etc.

Grace and peace...

I thought I would mention a beautiful fall picture book we just discovered - Fletcher and the Falling Leaves. It is a simple, yet lovely story. The illustrations are breathtaking! I also posted a review at my blog.

I don't know if this book has been mentioned, I picked it up at a garage sale & we just love it. It is The Happy Hedgehog by Marcus Pfister. Here is a sweet little sample to entice you...Mikko went to school with the Hare, "The teacher taught addition, subtraction, geography & penmanship...." The Hare said he memorized everything because he didn't understand it. "...He (Mikko) thought, you know, it is great fun to learn new things, but just memorizing without really understanding them is not what I want."

Music to my ears    This is such a sweet book about being happy where you are.

Here is a most charming and beautifully illustrated picture book (one of the best illustrated I have ever seen) called Simeon's Gift it is written by Julie Andrews and her daughter. It has inserted in the inside of the back cover, a cd of the story with Julie Andrews as the narrator and lovely background music.

It has a religious feel to the story, with Simeon visiting chanting monks in a monastery and listening to the trumpet fanfare as an Archbishop enters a Cathedral, it talks about God's creation and is a wholly delightful book all round - I highly recommend it - would make a beautiful Christmas gift.

Dawn, after writing my post above I had a look at your review on your blog for Fletcher and the falling leaves.

It is SUCH a pleasure to read your thoughts!

The description of weather at Thanksgiving and your childhood memories, making sure your squirrels and birds have their feed, is fancinating to read (we don't have the distinct change of season and we don't have the same wildlife or Thanksgiving) and heartwarming.

We've read some fun books lately, so I thought I'd add them to the list:

"Look-Alikes Jr." by Joan Steiner. This book is so clever and so much fun. The author has created several scenes (a house, a movie theatre, etc) in which the pictures are created using hidden, everyday objects. For example, the house porch railing is made of birthday candles, the chimney of stacked up dog biscuits, the flag pole a knitting needle. Searching for all the objects is very fun, and a nice change from the typical "I Spy" books. We discover new objects each time we read it. The kids love it.

"Saving Strawberry Farm" by Deborah Hopkinson. Two children and a whole town pitch in at a penny auction to save the local strawberry farm during the Depression. A sweet story- a good introduction to the Depression, plus I even learned about the penny auction system, which I'd never heard of before.

Two fun food books: "Dim Sum for Everyone" by Grace Lin. This book explains how you eat at a Dim Sum restaurant (Chinese). Cute pictures, easy to follow.

And: "Bee-bim Bop" by Linda Sue Park. We love this book- it features a little girl helping her mother make a traditional Korean dish called Bee-bim Bop ("mix-mix" rice). The rhyme is great for little ones (ex. "Hurry, Mama, hurry. Gotta chop, chop chop. Hungry-very hungry for some Bee-bim Bop". The pictures are adorable and the book includes a recipe. Reading it always makes me hungry.

"Be My Neighbor" by Maya Ajmera and John D. Ivanko. Great pictures of neighborhoods around the world and the children who live there. Forward by Fred Rogers.

"Katje the Windmill Cat" by Gretchen Woelfle. True story of a Dutch cat who saved a baby in a flood in Holland on St. Elizabeth's Day in 1421

Many of you may be familiar with the book Saints Lives and Illuminations by Ruth Sanderson. It has lovely depictions of saints from the first millennium.

Well, at the library today I found the follow-up book, hot off the presses! This one - More Saints Lives and Illuminations is equally appealing. It covers saints and blessed from the second millennium. The introduction includes information on the process of canonization. There are many saints books out there, but this has the most amazing illustrations. I've posted a listing of the saints that are covered in this book.

Thank you so much for sharing Mary, I have the first book and we love the pictures, this one is extremely appealing after reading your list of saints.

It has just gone to the top of my wish list!

Mary --

What a coincidence! I was just looking at this book in the Leaflet Missal catalog and decided it was a must for this Easter season! Thanks for the full listing of included saints!

I've just started buying new & secondhand books via ebay - here is a link to a store that sells More Saints Lives and Illuminations brand new.

I have been doing more Catholic Mosaic picture book shopping on ebay in the last few days, unfortunately for me not all sellers will post to Australia but US ladies can make cheap purchases with cheap postage!

I just bought a couple of beautiful books today, the children really loved them. A Apple Pie one of my favourite illustrators, Gennady Spirin put this 1600's ABC story to the most beautiful pictures. It has each letter on each page in upper and lower case print and cursive, I use a similar cursive style with my children so it was nice to see it in this picture book.

The other book that we simply loved was The Caldecott Award winning, Rapunzel by Paul O Zelinsky - it has artwork that rival's Gennady Spirin and we really delighted in studying each illustration.

We also finally bought Blueberries for Sal (always seeing it on your blogs ) and Patricia Polacco's Babushka Baba Yaga.

They were easily a 1/4 of the price or less in a clearance sale, all brand new, one very happy mum!

Our library just put out their fall books and although this one is not specifically a "fall" book (it covers all four seasons) I am able to check out Apples Here! by Will Hubbell again. This would also be a good Montessori picture book.
