I miss good old-fashioned cardinals being out west. I have to be content with Christmas art. When I visited home last time, I stayed at my brother's house. He has a veritable restaurant for birds with millet, suet, and black sunflower seeds. So many vaarieties came that I made it a point to wake up close to sunrise to see and hear the symphony.
The first year we were here, our yard was choice for northern flickers. That was before our Labrador sunk her teeth into one. Then, the little birds started to visit ... the cowbirds, jays, blackbirds, sparrows, and finches. Now we're beginning to see variety. It's kind of like the evolution of forests in warp speed.

We had a veery at our bird feeder this week! I've heard him for years out in the woods but what a surprise to see him next to the house.
I put a few pictures together:

This immature bald eagle wasn't in our yard, but only ten minutes away at "our" state park. Mark spotted him, right over our heads! Daddy identified him, and I verified it when we got home. It was a real family affair!

Not exactly in "our" backyard, but in the backyard of the house where we were staying this weekend.
And not in that yard, but in one a bit down the road was the male counterpart.

Oh, Theresa, the advantage we had with the bull pictures is being out on a lake with the moose on the shore with nothing in front of him and we could get pretty close without fear of him being able to charge us - .
And I'm sure you will have many more opportunities at photographing them than I ever will down here. Let us know when you get that elusive decent picture.

It appears we have a moose theme going on the board, Theresa and Mary:). No moose sightings here except for "When You Give a Moose a Muffin."
Great pictures, Mary.

This afternoon we heard some raucous "cawing" in the front of the house that went on for long enough I knew it wasn't just the normal crow noises. I figured they had to be mobbing some bird of prey - probably an owl - you know we love owls here. And we were not disappointed!
I have seen this mobbing only a couple times before and never this close - in the big tree right across the street from our house. The mobbing went on for about a half hour before the crows got tired and moved on. It did not phase the owl who is still there.

Fantastic!!!What a gorgeous bird!!!
You must have a really good camera. What do you have?
Here is what I saw in our yard night before last:
The northern lights. The picture is kind of blurry due to the wind, but still, what a sight! I feel so spoiled to be able to step out on my porch and see this stuff!
Oh, and I finally got a half-decent picture of our elusive moose in the yard last week, just before the snow:
It's not as good as Mary's Moose pics, but it's the best I could do!

Wow! I'm so happy for both of you! Thanks for sharing.
At the end of our long AZ summer, all we're seeing in our backyard are ants and weeds .
Love,

The joys of country living...here's what we saw last night, not in our yard but ON our kitchen window:

I'm so glad you finally got that elusive moose picture, Theresa (mine was as clear as it was because we were able to get pretty close in the canoe without fear of him charging in the water - and a powerful zoom helps!). What a beautiful animal (in a funny looking way ).
And the northern lights picture is so awesome - that is something I really want to see some day. You are very lucky to have that in your yard!
BTW, the camera I have is the Cannon Powershot 2S IS - it really does have a great zoom (48X) which helps for pictures like this.
Cay - I probably would not be very calm if that is what I saw in outside my kitchen window - pretty dramatic .

A Bullock's Oriole very much impressed me on our walnut tree. I'd never seen one before. Just had to share!

Danny gets photo credit for these pics
These just make me smile--so I wanted to share, and Danny wanted to show off his photography skills.
This was tonight over Grandma's house.

Cathhomeschool spotted this Red-Shouldered Hawk near the side of the road about 3-5 miles from our house this evening, and it was kind enough to sit still for a few pics before I scared him further away:
