Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Bump!

Happy Reading, everyone! We are revisiting some of our favs and have a couple new ones too!

We are starting Elin's Amerika and A Tree for Peter.

Those are in store for us this year, plus The Trees Kneel at Christmas (old illustrations. Our book is in terrible shape, but I really dislike the new ones.)

We've been doing Biffi's An Introduction to the Liturgical Year and The Christmas Anna Angel to begin our Advent.

I have also slated if we finish early The Christmas Stories of George Macdonald and A Little House Christmas Treasury: Festive Holiday Stories

Just requested that one! She also wrote A Turkey for Christmas which I want to find.

My children like The Lion in the Box. Jenn, we just checked out A Turkey for Christmas.

In addition to The Christmas Anna Angel, Ruth Sawyer wrote a bunch of other Christmas books. Thankfully, our library carries most, if not all of them. My children have given a thumbs up to This Way to Christmas, This is the Christmas, Joy to the World: Christmas Legends, The Year of the Christmas Dragon, Maggie Rose, Her Birthday Christmas, and The Wee Christmas Cabin of Carn-na-ween. The latter is a picture book for slightly older children.

I am waiting for Ruth Sawyer's The Long Christmas (the story of The Wee Christmas Cabin is included in this book) and her picture book The Remarkable Christmas of the Cobbler's Sons. This last book was illustrated by Barbara Cooney.

In case you haven't guessed, we're reading Ruth Sawyer's stories this Advent.

We just read the Lion in the Box for the first time too

Jenn, we also got A Turkey for Christmas, but just know that the version we got is a small book about 5x4. When your searchig if that matters remember to ask. I would have prefered a later edition which is bigger but a good book none the less.

We read A Turkey For Christmas before The Lion in the Box.
Luckily the library had both.

The kids liked them both. I liked the Lion book better. The Turkey book was also good- it just had some loose ends (for me, anyway). The little girl was sick and happily recovers, but the book never tells what her illness was. That bugged me for some reason. It was a major illness, and she was in the hospital for months. Was it polio? Scarlet fever? What???

But it is a sweet story, anyway. I would read it again.

From the library we also got The Young Oxford Book of Christmas Poems

It has an amazing selection of Christmas poems, and I like the bright illustrations on the glossy paper.

So Melinda, we're reading pretty much the same books this year. This is the book I picked for poetry this season, we've been reading a poem a day and picking one for copywork for the week

I almost did this, but I decided to pick smaller chapter books this season...I have many years ahead of me and want to spread the feast out for a long time.

What I love about The Christmas Anna Angel is that the Catholic Faith and the family's culture are breathed as one -- they live a Catholic Culture. Time is referred to by feast days of saints. Events are marked by the feast day, and different traditions and practices kept on those saints days.

That's what I'm looking for--Living and Breathing a Catholic Culture in a Christmas book. Plus the breathtaking illustrations. My boys were in love as soon as they saw the cover, and it will be a forever love now that they have seen St. Nicholas.

The Trees Kneel at Christmas has a similar immersed Catholic culture.

Oh, Jenny- I'm so glad to know we are enjoying these great books together !

And, Jenn- The Trees Kneel At Christmas is one of my very favorite
books.

I am sad that my library has very limited Ruth Sawyer titles. I may have to do the Anna book through ILL. I wonder if it would be hard to get a copy this time of year....

The Birds Christmas Carol is lovely. It's also a free download for the Kindle (or other free book sites, it's old enough to be out of copyright)

I read a real cute story this year probably would be great for the age level the OP wanted.. "The Sneezing Christmas Tree" it sounds silly but it was amazingly deep without being too much for the younger kids. I just got it on the Kindle and read it out loud.

Which reminds me.. for older kids (my 12 yr old was very interested in it) We've loved using Donkey Bells as a read aloud for Advent. For younger kids you might want to preview.. but as I said, my 12 yr old really was interested in it. I really liked that it had the "O Antiphons" and meditations for them.. I kept seeing those mentioned but never really figured out more about it.. and here it was all ready for me to use without any "figuring" at all.
