We like to camp and would be interested in this. Is it unbearably hot in August in the area? I'm embarrassed to say that I can rough it only so long in the heat.

Pretty close...I would say it's more like 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. It's a pretty drive.

Jenn, you are probably right. Back when I went to JMU, it would take me an hour from Front Royal to Alexandria. I was thinking Manassas was about halfway between the two. Of course, I was quite younger then and in a little more of a hurry, if you know what I mean!

Jenn's right, August can be disgustingly hot.
It might be OK if your campsite had showers...and you brought mosquito repellent.
August can be pretty thunderstormy (is that a word?). If not, it's just hot. (See above.)
Sigh.

A few years back, a number of families camped out at the Prince William Forest Park the weekend of the NACHE conference in Manassas. They have group sites. I didn't camp, but Elizabeth, MacBeth and Michele were among the campers, so maybe they can chime in about the experience. It is not very far from Seton School, though not as close as Bull Run. |

Can you believe it's been 5 years since we did that? I know because my Peter was a baby and he's 5 now. It was fun and we actually had pretty good weather (rained at night as I recall) but we did NOT have showers available. . . though we DID have some good conversations around the fire. I seem to remember having to organize a search party for 2 missing boys who we could hear on the walkies but not find.
The nice thing about camping is that it's easier to bring the whole family. I would be up for camping AFTER the conference but not during. It's tiring enough working a conference and dealing with camping (in possibly sweltering August) at the same time is not appealing. Especially if there are no showers!
Edited to add:
What's even more fun is staying at the same (or close by) hotel and gathering in someone's room or around the pool at night. Just be sure and bring a corkscrew!

That would be great if many of you could stay after the August 11 date (if that turns out to be the final choice) for a few more days of vacationing together, whether at a campground or hotel. I arrive home from vacation on the night of August 11, so I could at least visit with you all if you extended the 4 Real gathering into the next week.

Wow, I feel a little guilty, since I'll be getting in my car and driving about 10 minutes to get there. I'd love to come-- I'll be birthin' a baby around that time, but hopefully, the wee one will be in arms around that time and I'll be able to stop by!

Hmmm. Two thoughts.
I was wondering who might be interested in a "cabin social" with casual conversation , in VA, like we had a few years ago. Elizabeth and I had spoken a few years ago about the possibility of having a "practical" conference with sample work and fireside chats. I am going to be occupied until September, but the first two weeks in Sept. are looking free.
And...for a full conference, I think we might really need a full year+ to put it together.
