There was a good FlyLady / Cleaning / Decluttering thread here awhile back. Alice's opening post is great.

Where did you all get your sh-mops? Do they sell them at Walmart or Target or do you get it online somewhere?
Thanks.
Peace,
Nancy

Just reread Alice's post and remembered "anti Procrastiniation Day."
Since it is my "paper work day" and I was sitting at the desk anyway, made 2 appointments that I have been putting off since 12/1.
Thanks Alice and Suzanne
BYW, knowing that today is the desk day really helps, paper work is my nightmare so setting aside Monday, relieves my other days.

I got my Sh-mop and the 6-covers from The Flor Stor. That was several years ago when they weren't in the stores. Recently, I have seen them in stores (home depot, etc.), although they aren't necessarily less expensive and the terry cloth covers are definitely not as thick.

But thanks for all the suggestions on how to get the most of our Sh-mop -- this non-cleaner would never have figured it out!!

Mary, you'd be surprised at all the steam cleaner can do. I used mine on my stove top and was amazed at all the grime that came out. We have gas burners and the sugar bowl fell over on to one of them, then the sugar that we couldn't get to carmelized. The high powered nozzle blasted it right out, along with lots of other grime. It was great. I've used mine on counter tops, the kitchen sink, all around the baseboards and corners where dirt builds up, the dishwasher, walls, windows. I've only had it a couple of weeks, so I haven't tried everything it's supposed to do, but so far I've been really pleased.

I love my steam cleaner too. If I had a few solid weeks of time to steam everything, the house would be in great shape! I was amazed at all the dirt that came out from under the baseboards, where it wasn't even visible. I've been slowly going over all the grout on my floors, and they look great now. I've also found that I can get up some old stains on the carpets by steaming them out.

Maybe this should be a new topic, I'm not sure, but it falls in the organization category.
I have finished decluttering the children's books but now I would like to organize them or categorize them in some way. Has anyone come up with a good way to organize books? I saw some category labels referenced by Large Family Logistics. Does anyone have a workable home library system?

Matilda,
Someone here organized their books by sorting them into categories and then marking the spines with different colors of duct tape. It was a cool idea, but I haven't tried it. Maybe someone could find that thread? I'll see if I can...

We have a pretty large home library and something that I've been doing is listing all my books at LibraryThing. You can tag them however you want so you can put them in the categories that work for you, including a code for locating them in your house. Then when you want to find a book you can go to your catalog and pull it up. I'm in the process of listing all our books, but I still have lots more to go. It's been a good project for my 14 year old. You can list up to 200 books for free, or pay $25 for a lifetime membership. You can also keep your library private if you wish. You can check out my library to get an idea of how it works. The books my son entered don't have tags, so I will have to go back and do those at some point. It's helped me keep track of what we have, but I still need a better system of shelving the books. They seem to end up in tottering piles all over every flat surface in the house
Blessings,
Kym

I tried doing this once with colored sticker dots, but my toddlers pulled all the stickers off the spines. And the kids still didn't shelve them in the right place. Last fall, I decided to try and organize our books by sorting them into canvas bins by topic. This has worked a lot better for us, but it takes up more space.
I have been meaning to blog about my book bins for a long time now, and right now I'm experimenting with storing some picture books so I can rotate them. I bought a couple of plastic drawer units and labeled each drawer with an index card taped on the front (things like "ABC and 123 books, Series books, etc.) I put the drawer units in one of our closets.
It would really be much better with pictures, though.

I did the duct taping after that thread that Patty linked to. I got about halfway through last summer.
I also have a very loose picture book rotating system. We have so many picture books, including those beginning science and history books, and they were so difficult to see or access when they were shelved, yet they get messed up fast if the whole lot are in baskets or boxes. I keep the picture books in those plastic stacking bins and I go through them periodically to pull out new books my littlies might be interested in. When I get some extra time I plan to categorize them a bit -- right now they are all simply stored in there, so a picture wouldn't help -- you can probably already visualize stacking plastic crates.

I saw a product by Method ast Target yesterday that is a microfiber Swiffer-type mop (only ergonomic) with an all-natural cleaner. It was $24. I haven't tried it, so I don't know how well it works, but their regular wood cleaner smells divine, like fresh baked cookies. |

Philothea, I have that mop. I like the ergonomic handle and the pads are nice and soft. I have both the wood pads and the general floor pads. The wood cleaner works quite well on my hardwoods, just spray and mop and it does smell heavenly . The mop came with that sample bottle of wood floor cleaner. I may switch to Murphy's Oil soap once the sample runs out because my husband has fond "scent memories" of Murphy's.
I have a couple of minor concerns, one about the mop and the other about the wood cleaner. I think the velcro that holds the mop pads to the mop head may eventually wear out or come apart. They just don't look especially sturdy after using it several times.
Also, the spray part of the wood cleaner squirts out around the cap and drips all over the place. The problem is not with the sprayer nozzle but rather with the threads that hold the cap to the bottle. They are too loose or need a washer or something to control the dripping.
Otherwise, I really like the Method mop ( I think it is also called the O Mop though I can't be certain.)

Oh, thanks for that review, Rebecca! I am so tempted to get that mop just because I know how wonderful my house will smell if I do -- but I have been fairly satisfied with the Swiffer, so I don't know if I can justify it. Maybe when I run out of wet pads for the Swiffer ....
