Would it be a radical thought to suggest a nearby church hall or KofC hall just to set up some tables for the vendors on the Thursday and Friday of the IHM, so it wouldn't occupy the church for the needed weekend, but still could hit both conferences if you wish. Does St. Veronica's have a hall?

Sounds like we need our own Catholic CM conference -- if this forum is anything to go on, we cover the spectrum of Catholic curricula from unschooling to Seton/Kolbe and could certainly show folks that we're CATHOLIC and very interested in bringing our kids into the Kingdom ..... |

Well that's what I tried to do last year with our FCL conference but for those who are the die hard "there's only one way to do this" it only built more walls. In fact I was accused of causing scandal by even having that conference. |

Michelle,
I just have to chime in here and say how much I enjoyed the FCL conference last year. The thought that you were causing scandal saddens me. That conference was very Catholic and beautiful. It was a real blessing to me.

You ladies are walking on touchy ground and one that I recommend you don't touch! I have dealt with some of this in our own homeschooling group - Seton vs. NACHE, homeschoolers who only use Catholic materials vs. those who are open to non-Catholic materials - and it has not been pleasant. I agree that it is totally ridiculous and uncharitable, but the divisions among Catholic homeschoolers are there. Trying to work with both sides and come to a common ground is very stressful and often hurtful. I think it best to just do our own thing. If they want to join us, than they can, but leave it at that.

Maria, while I appreciate the word of caution, many of us have dealt with this for quite a long time, as well. We don't need to let others intimidate us into silence. Sometimes we just have to rise to the challenge for the future homeschoolers' sake. That's why I'd like to press this...
BTW, Catholic Expo is coming to Charlotte, NC (actually Belmont) this year. Isn't this the same as the former NACHE?

Interesting discussion. I am so far out of the loop here that I didn't even know there were divisions! Rediculous!
Seems to me, if there were someone willing to coordinate it, we have not only vendors, but enough expertise right here on this board to put on an entire Real Learning/Catholic CM conference, speakers, workshops and all. I really wish it would happen. I mean REALLY. REALLY. WISH.
I would be glad to coordinate it even, but I am so not in the thick of it like some of you ladies are. Needs to be in a place with more Catholics and more homeschoolers in general than here. But if someone else wanted to handle getting the venue, I'd be glad to coordinate any other details like rounding up speakers and vendors.
I'm just sayin'...

Maybe someone should call and ask before any more speculation is made. It would be hurtful too to accuse them of excluding when maybe they aren't.

I think that's really sage advice.

Maybe it could be a traveling Real Learning/Catholic CM conference? Or do podcasts? Although, I've never been to that part of the US...and I do like to travel...
I do have one question. What exactly is the issue between NACHE and Seton? I wasn't aware of one, but I have only been homeschooling for two years. And is NACHE linked to MACHE?

It's a very old wound, Paula and one better left alone, I think. Even for those of us who watched it unfold up close and personal, the memory isn't served well by time. There's no benefit to repeating the history.
One of the reasons this board thrives is that we aren't
"anti-anything." We invite members to look carefully at the spectrum of great ideas and beautiful materials and use what suits their families. In particular, we encourage each other to prayerfully discern God's will for each and every child. In some of our families--even in some moderators' families--Seton is God's will. Really. Seton can be 4Real .
It would be nice to see Michele represent Our Father's House at the IHM conference, if for no other reason than OFH has a unique product line that would bless so many families, regardless of their primary curriculum choices.
I think Michele should call, explain again that she is representing a major Catholic homeschool curriculum provider in Our Father's House, and ask why she is being excluded. From there, we can determine how best to be able to benefit from Julia's fine business and to fill a very real need we have for curriculum in this neck of the woods!

I agree. In all charity we really should assume that what they told me is true.
I am frustrated by not being able to attend but I do not want to further any hard feelings on either side.

As usual, cooler, wiser heads have spoken up. I'm sorry to have spoken in such haste. [I'm afraid I'm a little too irritable on weeks that dh is working 6 straight nightshifts.]
I agree, we should have a little more substantial knowledge of the reasons before assuming the more negative reasons for no CM vendors. But my willingness to help or do something is still on the table, as need be!
Okay, I'm going to bed now and will extract my foot from my mouth...

I agree totally. But my desire for a 4real conference really had nothing to do with all that. I'd just really like to see it happen as I think it would be a wonderful thing.

I whole heartedly agree. I'd be willing to travel (with little child in toe) to wherever this may take place. If there is anything I can do to help from my place here in MD let me know.

I've been away from the computer for the past two days. I'm sorry I sort of threw my thoughts out there and left. I agree with Maria B. in that we should leave things alone and do our own thing with regards to the people who are strongly anti-CM (or anti-whatever) when it comes to Catholic homeschooling.
I had visited the IHM conference vendor area a few years in a row to look at books and liked the fact that I could do that very conveniently. (The location has always been about 10-15 minutes from my home.) Last year, when Nache moved to Baltimore, I decided to attend the IHM conference for most of the day on Saturday and hear talks as well as shop. Some of the talks were great. I remember a very good spiritual one by a priest. But, as Molly noted, absent are the helpful homeschooling-focused talks that I used to enjoy at Nache. None of the homeschooling experts that I've loved hearing from in the past are ever invited to IHM. It's very disappointing to me, but I have some friends and acquaintances who love it, nonetheless. I wrote very long comments on the feedback form at the end of the conference last year regarding the lack of homeschooling topics and absent vendors like CHC.
That said, I am still glad that a Catholic homeschooling conference is held near me each year, even if the focus is not exactly one that I would wish.

Will CHC be there this year?

Last time I checked the website, yesterday, they didn't have the list of vendors on there yet.

I used to help sell CHC materials with another homeschooler at the IHM conference, but we have not done it the past 2 years. I just spoke to my friend, and she told me she heard from CHC last month, and they are supposed to be there. They will be taking orders, but will not be bringing materials. Also Rita Munn is supposed to be there and give a talk.

Just a quick note. I did call the conference coalition phone number this morning. I got a voice mail and I left a message. No one has returned my call yet. Since it's Friday I doubt I will hear anything until Monday.

That's good news. Thanks for letting us know, Ruth. I look forward to hearing Rita Munn speak.
