I am surfing to find modest swim wear for me. I am leaning towards board shorts because I am so tall and you can get longer ones. Does anyone have other options, or a site for good prices?

Molly:
I posted some links here at the bottom of this post.
I am needing something too, this year, since we will be visiting my family in MN this summer and will be spending more time in water than we do here in the NW! I have been able to get away with shorts and shirts the past few years b/c I've either had a baby or been pregnant.

I have a three-piece from Lands end that I like-- its got a little skirt to it that is still stylish, but I'm covered, and its a tankini, so nursing isn't too difficult.

Well, since you ask, I've been using the swimsuit from Wholesomewear for at least two years. It is very liberating even if it isn't, well, chic.
It hasn't been much of an issue because we usually don't go to the beach when the beach is full of bathers. The few times we've gone to the beach is during the off time when the beach has few visitors.
I have some friends who don't mind if I visit them wearing such an item. One day, I was poolside with my friend when some "worker men" showed up. I nearly leapt from my chair in horror because "I was in my bathing suit." Until I looked down and realized what I was wearing! It was O.K., to them, I must have looked like I was wearing a dress.
At the end of
this post I explain how I introduced this bathing suit to the rest of my family. Boy, were they surprised!

Helen, I saw these on your blog a while back, I was wondering about all that material and how heavy it would be when wet. We do alot of water sports, and I swim for exercise, so I think I need something lighter. Do you actually swim in yours? I am attracted to the dress one for hanging out at the pool, but I don't know about swimming....what say you???

Molly, I can't say that I'm big into water sports. But, I did jump off a boat into a deep lake and swim around. I've been in ocean waves with it. I'm not too particular and I can't say that any of these things bothered me. Overall, I find the suit very liberating. I can jump into the water and not be afraid of losing the suit. It stays on. I'm also very protected from the sun. There are snaps to keep the dress part closed while in the water. It can float up if I'm just standing in the shallow end with a baby.
The fabric is light. It doesn't stay wet. Under the dress part there is a full ... what do you call it? ... body glove?
I guess I really can't say how the suit would perform under sporty conditions from my own experience. My daughter and her friends use the shorts version. They certainly are sporty and swim fine with it.

Molly, if you're looking for something more durable/for sports/etc....what about going the "surf-style-route"? :
Alex and Me
Solar Tex
Ohana Swimwear
Most of these things are "form-fitting", but certainly aren't exposing any more skin than nec. They are also thicker and probably more durable for lots of exposure to the elements and chlorine, etc. Just a thought. I don't swim for exercise anymore, but if I did, I would consider this.
Here are a couple others, I have some time now to link:
Swimwear Solutions I don't have one of these, but I have seen/touched them. The lycra material is actually VERY thick and seems durable. My friend complained that the skirt "floated" up a bit too much for her taste, which is the nature of a skirt in water ....somtehing to consider, but she just felt like it was calling attention to herself.
Swim Modest My girls have these and they come in adult sizes. The lycra is not as thick as the Swimwear Solutions and maybe would wear out faster. I like the skirt on the bottom, but wonder how my gravity-prone-upper-body would look

Helen: it's funny that you say they aren't "chic" cuz I actually think they're quite cute. but, maybe because in the picutres on the website they are cute teenagers in them!!
....in case anyone was wondering.....the two pieces of material (the lycra and the sport-nylon) on the Wholesome Wear Suit are sewn together, so the when you zipper it down, BOTH pieces of material go down, which means that you WOULD have access for nursing. You would have to COVER UP, of course, cuz half of your chest would be showing, but you would have access. Unusual for a non-maternity-one-piece-suit.

These are the suits my girls and I got last year. I absolutely love the fit and confidence I feel wearing mine. You are well covered but have freedom to really swim. We look adorable in our matching suits.
My only complaint is that the seams are not holding up well and we will only get maybe two seasons out of them. And there is really no way to nurse in this style.
However they are worth it if you are a swimming/water family like we are.

not as modest as some of the things mentioned.. but I wear a speedo swimsuit.. they're designed to stay put while you're swimming.. and I found that I can pull the suit around from the side and have nursing access very easily. still need a cover.. but then I have a towel handy. I'm getting a pair of swimshorts from Lane Bryant Catalog for modesty for me.. ones I should be able to wear in the water.
My kids do swim team, so they're swimming competitively.. and wear the standard racing suits.. jammers for the boys.. and even though they're tight fitting.. I love the fact that they stay put.. boys trunks always seem to barely be hanging onto their hips or they're gaping at the leg or something.. and girls are forever pulling suits up and down.. and the racing suits really do stay where they're supposed to be much better than others.. we do have the girls slip on shorts (or some type of cover up) when not in the water.. shirts for the boys when not in the water.

I bought a two-piece from Lands End, but it looks like one-piece when it's on. I bought the halter-style top because it would provide more support for my nursing figure , and the swim skirt bottom--I thought that'd be easier than regular bottoms with a skirt on top. It is very flattering--this is the best I've felt in a swimsuit in years. The pieces were $100 together, so that was quite expensive, but I will get a lot of use out of it. Plus, the last time I bought a non-maternity, non-nursing swim suit was 1999--I was due for something new!
ETA: Also, it seems like it will be easy to nurse in.

Marihalojen and Rachel May had some suggestions in the past. Last year dh and I spent hours at a mall after catalog shopping wasn't working for me. I need more support up top, and so I tried on dozens of tops. I ended up having two bottoms and two tops that I could mix and match.
Eddie Bauer (and other stores) have these great MiracleSuit skirt that pulls on, has a little extra tummy control, but also the extra coverage.
The other bottoms are nylon swim shorts that have a "panty" inside. These were Lands End, but I see they are a bit different than what is in the catalog now.
Both are comfy (and in slimming black ) and good for physical exercise. It's so nice having some coverage.
Now the tops...nothing to write home about. Some dept store. Separates are so freeing, though.

Anne and Molly: So, these have a built in shelf-bra or whatever they call it on top?

My link doesn't seem to be working. Must be because of my cookies or something. Search www.eddiebauer.com/ for miracle suit separates or skirt and it will come up.
I also found it online here...and there are two other versions, a pleated and belted skirt, too.

I think I want board shorts, they seem easier while boating, and the ones I am looking for goes down the thigh further. I want loose fitting ones that are quick drying! Any websites anyone knows of????

Here's the pair I got for myself.. and another one that might be more what you're looking for.
fuller shorts
longer shorts
these are from lane bryant catalog.. for larger women.. but they go down to around 12/14.. be sure and check their sizing charts.. they're a bit different from like walmart.. but the clothes match to their charts well.

yes, but its not the most supportive. I think there was underwire in it, but I can't tell you for sure.
If I go upstairs to check right now, I'll fall aseep.

Thanks Jodie, I think these look good. Have you ever ordered from Lane Bryant before? How is the quality?
