Dear friends,
If you have just a minute would you mind saying a little prayer for my new little guy and for me? I know this is small potatoes compared with most of the things we all pray for here on this board, but I could use a little help getting through this small potato... some of you have seen my post about breastfeeding woes and I've taken all of your advice with the hope that little Caleb and I might be able to keep breastfeeding. Earlier this week I ordered the Candida Control Kit and began the yeast-free diet. (The kit finally came in the mail today.) Unfortunately, two days after I posted I was diagnosed with another UTI, so I'm back on antibiotics again and despite all my efforts, the yeast symptoms are getting worse. I know this is how it works temporarily, but Caleb comes off of his antifungal prescription (Diflucan) on Monday and after lots of phone calls between the OB and pediatrician, they've decided not to renew our antifungal prescription because it can cause liver damage if it isn't absolutely necessary. Problem is, Caleb's thrush is clearing up (while he's still on the AF) while mine is getting worse and I'm afraid that if I keep nursing him I'll just give thrush back to him again once he comes off the AF. Then what?? I don't want him to keep getting this from me and have to repeat meds that may cause liver damage...our yeast has just been so resistant to treatment!
My lactation consultant hasn't returned my call yet and dh wants me to wean and just get us both back to "normal" ...thing is, I haven't nursed Caleb in 24 hrs. (I'm pumping and throwing it away since the milk is filled with yeast and yeast toxins) and Caleb really wants to nurse. It's breaking my heart not to be able to nurse him when I can tell he wants to and he's sending me all the signals...I'm so miserable. I just don't know what to do. It looks like antibiotics for another week or so for me and then (as a result) continued battles with yeast as well, for at least 2 weeks beyond that. I have no idea how long it will last and dh is really worried and pushing hard for me to let go of this and get us both well (we've been dealing with this now for 4 weeks). Should I spare Caleb from this or is there a way to work through it without fear that I might be harming him?? Dh wants a guarantee that Caleb will be safe and I can't give it to him because I just don't know. No one I know has dealt with this before, for weeks on end. The OBs aren't any help (they suggested I wean to end this "cyclical yeast") and the pediatrician isn't offering any advice either.
I just don't know what to do. I don't know what's safe or best for Caleb.
I'm praying that God will help me have a heart filled with gratitude for a happy, wonderful baby and a dh who loves us enough to want to protect us from all bad things. I don't want to cry over this so much.
Thank you for letting me come here to ask for your help.

Oh Kristine, I feel so sorry you are going through this. That cycle is a hard one to break. I have been there and ended up getting off all of the medications so I did not have to wean my Christopher years ago. Please PM me if you are interested in hearing how we got through it naturally(without meds).
I will be praying for you and your little Caleb.

Prayers for you -
And I recently heard of something called "Magic Nipple Cream", an anti-fungal perscription used to prevent and/or treat thrush. Might be helpful at ask about it.

Oh Kristine, my heart is just aching for you. I too had ongoing (what seemed like they would never end) breastfeeding challenges (breast infections) with one of my babies. And I've had SO many friends who have walked in your infection-antibiotic-thrush cyclic shoes. We care so much about our baby and don't know what to do. We receive so many different opinions and don't know which to listen to. Our loved ones see us suffering and want relief for us but they too don't know what to do. What suffering!
Know that you are in my prayers. I also know that you are in wonderful hands to receive excellent information, support, and encouragement personally from Rebecca. Many mothers have found great success by following alternative routes to currently standard medical treatments. There is great hope for you and your breastfeeding relationship with Caleb!
Here are Thrush Resources from kellymom.com that may help.
Hang in there, mom, you are doing amazing, hard, and purposeful work!
Love,
