Hi!
I am checking to see if we can go visit any of the museums related to LIW.......so far this one seems the most obvious choice
Burr Oak, Iowa
has anyone been there? Is it worth the effort?........it will be slightly out of my way, and "cost" me a day.
How about any of the others? Any we should not miss?
Thanks!

We were there in 2005. I'm glad we took the time to visit (it was a little out of our way too, but I was determined not to miss it). It helped us make more connections in Laura's life. My memory is failing, but I think the Ingalls family only managed the Masters Hotel for one year, and this was right after the death of their only son. It was well preserved and the people there were friendly and helpful.
We have now seen all the LH sites expect the Wilder home in New York which is definitely too far for us. Have you been to the one in Mansfield? We were there in 2000 when we took the southern route through Independence, Kansas. I'm so glad I have younger girls because that means we will have to do it all over again.

Chari,
The girls and I plan to stop at the LH in Kansas this summer. I've heard there isn't much there but I simply cannot phantom driving all the way up there and not walking in the path of Laura's little house.

Chari, I have a book with all the LH sites & museums. Let me see if I can find it...(Maybe ask St. Anthony to help me--our books are totally disorganized here. All on shelves, but in a hodgepodge in every room in the house!)
If I find it, I'll send it your way on loan if you'd like.
Your friendly Little House librarian,

oh, thank you, Lissa! You are SO sweet! But, stop looking! I have it, too..... of course
I just got it out last night......
I just wanted to hear from REAL people
But, Lissa........have you ever been to any of the houses yourself?
Of course, Cay....you must stop!!!
That house is too far from our path
Thanks, Janet, I will try to get there. Maybe we will view the LH TV shows about the hotel, just for fun and some connection, since she did not write about these experiences.
but, maybe the one for Farmer Boy we can do, too...hoping! It looks like it may be on our way....
BTW, WELCOME to the boards, Janet! Thanks for posting!
I really wanted to go to Mansfield........WAY TOO FAR
It is SO hard to be in almost all of the states, but still too far away.....aw, man!
Anyone been to the one in NY? What did you think?

LOL! I'm glad you have it, because I haven't found mine (yet).
Nope, I haven't been to any of the sites. The KS and MO ones were way too far off our path on our own journey west. Couldn't justify the extra days of traveling with my little ones, you know?
At one point there was talk of my doing a book tour to all the sites (Harper was wanting to send me), but I had a nursling at the time and thought it would be too hard on the family.
Of course I didn't get to go to Scotland either when I was researching those books!

Hi Chari,
Our famiy visited Rocky Ridge Farm this past November as a side trip to our big vacation to Eureka Springs. It is really the premier LH museum as it is where Laura and Almanzo settled when Rose was very little and they lived there until their death.
This museum has tons of wonderful artifacts, including Pa's fiddle! You can actually tour the home itself as well as the "Rock House" that Rose had built for her parents with proceeds from her first book sale. It is in a lovely part of the country and on your way out of town you can visit the Wilder family gravesite where Laura, Almanzo, and Rose are buried. ALL my kids loved it; there is a lot of room for an impromtpu picnic on the grounds of the home and my kids had a blast just running around in Laura's front yard! If you'd like more info or have more questions, feel free to PM me...Gotta run, baby is calling!

While I'm here Lissa, I have always wanted to continue on with the LH books and buy the Charlotte, Caroline and Martha years, and I would like to do this later in the year - do you sell them direct and is it more beneficial to you to do that?
Don't know if posting to Australia is a problem though....

We were here nearly 10 years ago (my mum's family is from MO, and we had our reunion in Branson.) I really enjoyed seeing all of Laura's things, and looking at their house. Even my boys liked it (they did think, judging by the clothes displayed, that they were all really short!)
I have a friend who went to DeSmet, and I can ask her about that one.
The only thing, I didn't take my young ones into the museum, just from a $-saving position. My dh wasn't exactly keen on going in either , so he stayed outside and played with the littles.
God Bless,

Chari,
I printed out this map a couple weeks ago in preparation for our Kansas trip:
http://www.littlehouseontheprairie.com/web/travel.htm
We've been to the one in Mansfield, MO. I'm going to have them map each route in a different color marker. They'll also place a gold star sticker on the sites we've been to. Hopefully one day all the LH spots will be star-struck.

I've been to the Walnut Grove one in Minnesota. Our kids loved it (its about a 2 hr visit, if you do it slowly). There is a site nearby where you follow a road through some farmer's field (he charges per car) to the lump next to the creek where they believe the original soddy was (and a sign for picture taking). And there are lots of places to dip your feet in Plum Creek, which we did.
We brought dirt and water back for a friend from the creek, and spent way too much money in the gift shop, too.

We went to the site in Mansfield, Kansas. When we walked up to the house---after a week of traveling during which time one of my dc had had a heat seizure at Mother Angelica's convent in Alabama where we had to call an ambulance, one had fainted at another church from the heat AND we had gotten caught in a tornado, literally...I BURST into tears and sobbed to the poor docent, "I could NEVER have done this in a wagon..." The funny thing was that she patted me on the back and said, kindly, "There, there, everyone cries when they come here"
What is the name of the book that lists all the sites? Sounds like a good one for Road Trips.

The one I've seen is The Little House Guidebook.

I have this one and love it.
In Kansas, I bought this book:
Exploring the Homesites of Laura Ingalls Wilder by Barb Hawkins.
I understand she gives site tours of all the Ingalls' homesteads.
This book is fantastic and the guide at the Kansas site said they sell a lot of this one. Not so many of the 100 Verses. But the "Exploring..." book gives you so much more than what you asked for. It covers the homesites and beyond.
It includes a map of all the sites.
If you'd like more about what's in the book, just ask. Did I say how great it is?

Cay, you were so close to me when you visited the Kansas site! I promised dd that we would visit there before we leave the country. Would this book be a good accompanyment to our visit? I have been told that there is not much left to that site, and I do not want to disappoint dd.

Carole,
I put a short video clip of our visit on my blog.
Honestly, there really isn't much to see in terms of the Little House. But there is an old school house and post office that was moved onto the property which you can tour. And you can still see the site of the real well that Pa and Mr. Scott dug. It's enclosed due to safety reasons but it's still neat to stand near.
My 9 yr old was most impressed with the (supposed) Indian trail behind the house. She walked down it aways just imagining the horses and Indians heading west.
Overall, my girls were impressed. Anyway, I linked the information on my blog for you to look over and decide for yourself.

Okay, I think I'm done adding Little House pictures.
I have children at nanny and parian's house this morning which allows me time to play.
