Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

As for barbecues - usually hamburgers (which we call beefburgers)

Now, isn't that a lot more logical than here in the US? After all, they are made with BEEF, and not HAM.

"Coffee regular" is also the case in the New York area (NYC and suburbs like Long Island and Jersey). I remember one time I ordered coffee (black, not decaf, in my mind) and was asked,"Regular," "yes". Then it came with cream and sugar and from there the waitress and I went into a routine that makes "Who's On First" look like some kind of serious drama. But now I know!

Michele - having lived in both Lancaster and Philadephia, I have eaten many cheese steaks (absolutely NOT with CheezWhiz) with fried onions, fried mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. I know it sounds like that doesn't go together, but it is without equal!

The thing I've always thought was weird was that in a lot of pizza places in the New Haven area (not sure about the rest of the state) the pizza was not sliced into large triangle slices, but the whole round pizza was criss-crossed so that it came out in 2-inch squares. Much more difficult to grab and eat!

This thread is really fun. It's amazing how different things can be from one place to the next.

Peace,
Nancy

Fried Clams usually with the bellies (eww!, yet still common among New Englanders - I also worked three seasons at The Weathervane).

Now, there's something I really miss . I get fried clams, with bellies, every time I head back "home" to Hingham. I have never found a place here that offers them.

Oooh, I forgot about dessert. Pecans and peaches are big in Texas. I love pecan pie. And my great grandmother used to make the best fried peach pies. Mmmmmm.
