I am fairly new to the forums and every day I am reading old posts and this one caught my eye. Thank you so mcuh for lettnig us know about the revisions that are going to be made to the Martha and Charlotte books. I love Little house books and do not have any of these but since reading your post I just ordered all of them excepy two that I could find! I, like most would rather read a complete book rather one that has missing pages or chapters.
Thanks again,
Meredith in FL

Hi y'all. I haven't had a lot of luck finding these online and Amazon did eventually say the rest of my order wouldn't ship, BUT I have found several still in store at Barnes and Noble. I managed a whole extra set of Martha books to keep either as a gift or for my grandchildren.
I also, sadly, saw the new copies at another bookstore. My daughter was shocked when she saw how thin Little House in the Highlands is. She spent the whole night listing her favorite chapters, saying, "They better not have taken out THAT one!"
Anyway, check around in your local bookstores. I will too!

I just want to add that my mom (retired 5-th grade English teacher ) started reading the prequels after I started collecting them a few months ago. In two weeks she has read her way through all of the Martha and Charlotte years. If she had the books at her house I'm sure she would have read all through Caroline, re-read the original Little House books and be part way through Rose!
She has really been enjoying them.

I found the missing two that I needed at Books a Million and I also saw the new books there as well. It's a shame that the publisher is doing this. I am glad I have all of the Martha and Charlotte books now :)

I was able to complete my set thanks to a mom here at 4Real who had an extra copy of Across the Puddingstone Dam for sale. I was very close to paying $30 at Alibris for it.
Harper Collins shows the books with the old covers/unabridged.
This issue of The Old Schoolhouse has a full page ad from Harper Collins with all the new book covers. There is a new book in the Laura set "Old Town in the Green Groves"
by Cynthia Rylant. I haven't read this one. Any reviews?
I showed Anne-soon-to-be-8 the ad with the new covers and asked her what she thought compared to the covers we have.
"I like ours better. When it's a painting, you have an idea of what everyone looks like but you can change things in your mind. When it's a picture that stays in your mind and you can't use your imagination."
We didn't discuss the abridgement issue.
Anne also noticed that the cover for The Long Winter was "awfully happy for a family that had no food and was starving to death".

This saddens me greatly! Having loved anything Little House since I was young and having become addicted to tracing my husband and my family history over the past several, I immediately began collecting them as soon they were published.
I haven't read them in awhile and as soon I saw this thread the other day, I went to my collection and took inventory. I am missing four. One from the Charlotte Years (Road from Roxbury) and three from the Rose Years (Little Town in the Ozarks, New Dawn on Rocky Ridge, and On the Banks of the Bayou). I am going to try to locate them on-line at a reasonable price. And I'll be keeping an eye out for them at book sales!
I have so enjoyed the Martha Years, the Charlotte Years, and the Caroline Years. For me they hold the same charm as the original Little House series. For some reason, I wasn't as impressed with the Rose Years. They were OK, but just didn't grab my heart like the others.
I have recommended this series to so many people. Now I'm going to have to tell them to be sure to get the "old" ones! I just don't understand why anyone would want the abridged version.
I only wish I had purchased two sets back when I began collecting them, one to give each of my girls!

Hi Ladies,
I am so thrilled! I only needed one book to complete my prequel collection - On Top of Concord Hill. The book prices are . I've been to all the book stores in the area or so I thought. I didn't realize our mall had a book store. Of course, I had to make a visit to see if they had any of the prequels.
I stifled a scream when I saw that they had one copy of On Top of Concord Hill. I immediately picked it up and paid for it. I was trying not to grin from ear to ear. I could hardly believe it.
The only other books they had left were Across the Rolling River. (I know that Adoremus Books carries it.) Otherwise I would've picked some up for whomever needed a copy.
Peace,
Mare

I found one title I needed at Amazon (at a normal price) and then thanks to Mare and the Adoremus website, I was able to get two of the other books I needed.
I now only need The Road from Roxbury to complete my collection! I'm number 14 in line to receive it from PaperBackSwap. Oh well, maybe I'll find it at a book sale or garage sale this summer.

Have you tried the places that Lissa has posted recently on her blog,
Here in the Bonny Glen? I was able to get Roxbury from one of the sources. Also note the comments they listed another resource.

I'm holding my breath....I think I found a family owned site/store that sells them by sets.
I placed an order over the phone--a child took it and the catalog version he was looking at said The Charlotte Years had three books, but the web showed four titles. It didn't matter to me, as long as I got book #3!!!
I asked if they were the original or the abridged and he went to check. He said it didn't say, so I explained the difference and he said the covers had drawings.
He said he couldn't give me an exact total because it needed entered into the computer. But I'm suppose to receive the first three Charlotte books for $18 plus $5.50 shipping (their minimum shipping cost).
The website is By Way of the Family
Oh, I pray it's really true! I just love these books!

I was just AT By Way of the Family's store last week, and they had lots of them. Originals. But, not Road to Rox.

Keep checking the bookstores. I found The Road to Roxbury long after Amazon stopped selling it.

I found most of the books at bookcloseouts.com and for the couple I couldn't get I found them at my local Books A Million. All the old ones. I did see the new ones and did compare them with the old and there is a big difference!
Good Luck in your search!

Check out some old posts of other sources to try and find the unabridged.
