Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK am I the only weirdo here, after all this time I NEVER realized Lissa was Melissa Wiley!   Can we say DORK!!!!    I mean I know I'm slow but my goodness I thought someone was messing with my mind
Molly, you are MOST CERTAINLY NOT the only dork on the forum! I had my "duh" moment when Lissa started using her picture as her avatar -- before then I thought Lissa Peterson and Melissa Wiley were two different people. And then, when she called from her mom's house in Denver and there was yet ANOTHER last name, I thought I was really losing it!

Still wondering about the books by the other authors? Anyone have any strong feelings of love or distaste for any of them?

I might be the oddball here, but we tried the Caroline and Rose books a few years back, and to me, they simply didn't have the spark and the excellent writing found in Lissa's books. The girls and I got a little bit bored with them. But, we only tried a couple, and it has been awhile since I've looked at them, so ....

Just one woman's opinion.

I blogged about the whole thing last night, too. It makes me very sad.

About getting the books -- definitely go for NEW to round out your collections (I have enough for each of my girls to have their own sets.) It sends the all-important message that these books are being bought up before they're abridged. In other words, it sends the message that we want the originals!

The only one out-of-print and not available (new) from Amazon or BN.com is The Road from Roxbury. Yesterday, there were still several copies at Half.com, but I see that they only have one left at $29!

I just looked at Alibris.com and it looks like about the same thing ....

Karen, I thought the same thing -- and that was BEFORE I figured out exactly who Melissa Wiley was/is so I don't think I was biased!    The Rose years just didn't seem to have the same innocence or love of life that the Laura and Lissa books have ....

We loved the Rose and Caroline books here.....even if we loved Lissa's better The girls loved to imagine Ma as a little girl. We preferred the first three (2?) Caroline books by Maria Wilkes.

.....except the last three Rose books were not quite as fun....

You are right, Mary, about a lack of "innocence" in the Rose books......but the kids and I enjoyed hearing the details of Laura being a mom........they had so much hardship, it was a good lesson to us in perseverance.

Sometimes I STILL remind the kids that Rose had to eat beans and cornbread for three meals a day, everyday...........that shuts them up pretty quickly!

I still would rather have the whole set........I wonder when I will read them again???? To myself? My grandkids? I guess I better read them to my 5yo sometime so he has some memories.....

So many LH books, so little time

Thank you all for your candid opinions regarding the other prequel/sequel books. We are really enjoying Lissa's books right now (I have the whole collection). I think we will turn our financial attention to filling in the holes in our Betsy-Tacy collection now that we know her availability is being threatend as well. *sigh*

We just visited Deep Valley this past summer because of my husband's memories of reading one the Betsy-Tacy books as a child. I had never heard of the books before that, but now I am hooked!

Is there a list of titles anywhere? Amazon has a book in the Caroline series call "A Little House of Their Own" that isn't on the publishers site.

I think this was the last book published in 2005, so it probably was never added to that website. That's my assumption, anyway. On one of the Laura Ingalls Websites it listed "A Little House of Their Own" as "new in 2005." There is a list on this website too.

I had a question on whether boys would enjoy the Betsy-Tacy books, too. I see that your husband did, at least! Any thoughts on that from mothers of boys? I have 3 boys, no girls so far, but I just had to buy all the soon-to-be-OOP Little HOuse books anyway. I figured if my boys don't enjoy them, and I never have a daughter, at least I will get to read them, and pass them on to nieces or friends' kids! Should I take the same attitude toward the Betsy-Tacy books? I never read them, but they do look cute!

Jane, that has been my question! I have a boy, and it's hard to justify paying for "girl books" that are beyond his reading level right now anyway.

We read the Betsy-Tacy books outloud and my son (then about 9) also enjoyed them. We are enjoying Lissa's Charlote books now and he is definitely invested.

Note: This child is all boy and for the record, I can't imagine him reading them to himself (especially now that he's all about Redwall )

Whew!! I now have ALL of the Martha, Charlotte, Caroline and Rose books. I had to get them between Bookonecloseouts, Walden books, Amazon and eBay. I was in a fierce bidding war for a lot of 21 books last night, but that finished up the collection. Now we are off to read them!

Oh well done, don't you just love it when you have a win on ebay?

You are most welcome -- not to make Lissa blush, but I like the Martha years the best (even better than Laura's stories) ... but then the first one, Little House in the Highlands has tons of references to knitting and "Mum said no one in Glencaraid could knit so well as Auld Mary" --

DH surprised me and bought me all the books that have been in my amazon cart for who knows how long. The only one of Lissa's books that wasn't in my cart was "The Road from Roxbury." It was $30!! I just wanted to let you all know that I was able to get it from the Wilder Homestead for the list price. If anyone else is needing that particular book. But beware...the lady who answers the phone is VERY chatty . I was on the phone with her for over 20 mins!

Oh, what a sweet dh. I think we'd have to take out a second mortgage to pay for all the books in my cart. Is the book paperback?

I'm still struggling with deciding to buy these now!
