Just curious to see if there are famiies here who don'thave a TV. We do but my best friend and her family gave up their TV over three years ago. It's amazing how much more "young" her kids seem than mine. They listen to a lot of books on tape and music.
I personally don't watch much TV - an hour or two a week (or less) when dh is gone and when he's home it tends to be on non-stop. He likes to watch movies and so I will usually watch a movie but I have be doing something so I will crochet.

Yes. I let my kids watch too much of it (DVDs/videos, selected PBS Kids, rarely anything else) but we adults watch almost nothing. We don't have cable.

We have satelite -- package plan with phone and DSL. And we have only one TV - a small one.
The kids watch Magic School Bus every morning - if they haven't seen it. The TV is off all day until the kids programming on EWTN at 3 -- IF we are finished with lessons and they are not outside playing.
The TV is turned off after that until their bedtime - 8 p.m. Some nights I will turn it on after that if I know there is something good on History or Discovery or EWTN that I want to record.

We had DirecTV with Tivo for about 3 years, but about 4 months ago, we made the decision to get rid of it and our main TV. So, we sold our very large TV and gave away the entertainment center. We have a small TV in our room, but we live in the middle of a forest, so the rabbit ears don't pick up many channels. That prevents us from watching much TV at all. I never have watched much, but it was too easy for me to let my girls watch it and then I would feel guilty. SO, we just let it go. It was a hard transition at first, but I am thankful we made the decision while they are still really little. It makes me very happy that my girls spend more time playing, and when DH is home, we spend better quality time as a family. My parents are still raising little chidren (I am the oldest of 6, the 4 youngest are 8-years-old and under), and they watch a LOT of TV, and I have seen how as they get older it gets to be a problem if it isn't *heavily* supervised.

We do know, however for the first nine years of our marriage we didn't at all. We occasionally hired one when we wanted to have a video marathon. Even now the dc only watch videos.

We have a the Family Package with Dish network. It's $19.95 a month and there are mostly kids friendly channels. As long as we get EWTN, The magic School House and Food network, I'm happy

We have a TV but no cable or satellite; but this season, we were able to watch the bowl games and playoffs (altho a bit fuzzy). Other than that we don't watch commercial tv at all. We get all our news from the Internet, radio or newspaper.
We avoid using the TV during the "school week" -- occasionally I'll let the kids watch a DVD/video that applies to what we're studying; on the weekends, it's only on for "family movie" in the evening.
It's too easy to get sucked into the commercial tv -- I see a commercial for a show/movie and then I watch that and see a couple of commericals for other shows/movies and pretty soon I'm watching it all the time. I just don't have the time to waste on TV! That said, I do enjoy an old movie (esp mysteries) in the evening so I can knit -- but again, we do try to minimize even that.

We have a TV but it is only used for videos. We don't get any channels in unless we pay for them.

We have a tv, and we get a few channels with "rabbit ear" antennas, but we don't really watch too much. Dh uses it more than everyone else, and we do watch videos some.

We have one TV, in the LR, with an antennae. We get 2-3 local channels but the kids and I rarely watch "real" TV. I take out videos from the library for them. My kids are pretty "young" too.
Ds watched the Super Bowl with dh on Sunday and was so enamoured with the commercials. He wasn't playing football, he was acting out commercials all day Monday

Only EWTN, we have for the past 5 years had our normal channels disconnected. When we received EWTN we discovered how we had more firmly closed the door on the culture around us. It never surprises me how easily it gets in and effects us all.

Nope, no TV! I gave up TV in college when I read some interesting things about it. The two that have stuck with me are
1. You burn more calories sleeping than from watching TV. (Hey, I need all the help I can get these days )
2. The information that you watch on TV by passes the reasoning part of your brain.
However, with active children and long afternoons, we have resorted to down streaming EWTN kids programming from our computer. And, of course, we watch an occasional video.

I wish not, but we have a mungo 52 inch flat screen with the full cable package. My DH really enjoys being able to unwind on weekends with TV. He travels all week and I haven't been able to show him how hard it is for me to regulate.

We have a TV but don't have cable and pick up no channels, so it is used only for DVD's. My little kids do watch educational videos occasionally during school hours (Leap frog, Sesame street) and I get Netflix so I can get alot of neat stuff to go with our studies. It has been awesome for American history-we are learning so much!
Dh and I have a small TV in our room for watching grown-up movies after the kids have gone to bed. Last week it was a "Godfather" marathon, 1, 2 and 3!
Oh, and it isn't ideal, but we do sometimes put in a fun movie in the evening for the kids so dh and I can have a little grown-up time. In fact, right now, they are watching Finding Nemo. I'm no saint, after all.

We have a TV but it's only for videos. The kids are only allowed to watch 30-45 minutes a day depending on the video. When I clean the bathroom I let them watch a longer movie. I would love to get EWTN, but I don't really know how to get it. Also, we move a lot (military) and moving a satellite dish just doesn't sound fun.

Can I ask how you do this? We have DSL and I would love to see EWTN.

We do have a tv, but no cable, and we get NO reception without it. We had cable with a DVR up until a few month ago. Then our tv broke, and we were using the little tv that we bought for long car trips (I think it's 9 inches?). Then that broke( ) and I figured maybe God was trying to say something to me. After several months with NOTHING (much to the disappointment of my movie-loving 5 y.o) we got a new tv at Thanksgiving. We are far more moderate than we had been in the last year and a half.
We have netflix, and we download our tv show from itunes every week.

I am happy with just those channels/programs, too! However, DH really enjoys his Patriots and occasional Celtics and Redsox. I wish we could just pay for the channels we watch. Sigh.
I will say that TIVO has shortened viewing time considerably. We fast forward through commercials -- which are often yucky anyway. Even the recent TLC program on the Duggars had two commercial previews for an upcoming show about a family who practices witch%craft.
Blessings,
