Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

non-wheat tea treats

That's really hard, as I always associate "tea" with cakes, cookies, scones, tea sandwiches.... which is why teatime disappeared around here....

Can't have wheat, eggs or dairy (and 8-yo is allergic to nuts too). (I'm the only one who can really eat anything!)

Tortilla chips and guacamole or salsa just doesn't go well with British tea, does it.

Ditto what Alice, Lissa and Elizabeth (and everyone else) said, it's become a regular and much anticipated part of our afternoons, and such a nice time for everyone, especially my three boys I want them to know how to be able to calmly relax and enjoy a special well-behaved activity that's not just a girl thing!! Of course my dd enjoys it immensely as well as we use her special collection of teacups that my mother is passing on to her!!

Treats made without wheat - I have made all kinds of cookies, cakes, and so on, by using equal parts rice flour and buckwheat flour to substitute for the wheat flour. Depending on the recipe, sometimes I also put in a tsp. or so of xanthan gum. The results are not exactly like what you would get using wheat, but plenty close enough for us - though maybe after two years I'm forgetting what wheat flour is like in cookies!

Stef,
We do a lot of chips and guacamole or salsa or both. It goes pretty well with hot lemonade. We also eat a lot of popcorn at tea time, usually with apple cider. If I want to do cookies, I just buy a slice and bake and let the kids do it themselves. That way I don't touch it and there's no flour dust. It always makes me a little sad.

Tea Time everyday? Well, almost but not every day. I mean, life happens. But I love to look to the British who made tea time such an important part of their day.

Fancy ? I believe this picture(taken last year of my girls) will answer your question.
PJs and laundry basket are good enough for us.

Love this topic! I really appreciate Elizabeth's article from when she had three boys and started tea time. Dawn's tea times with her boys are always inspiring too. Tea is not just for girls anymore! My boys still nap and don't get up until nearly dinner time (lucky me, I know) but I'm filing these ideas away for when we have those LONG afternoons to fill. Thanks ladies

We really miss "teatime" here also. This is something the kids definitely want to do again..

I have a silly question... where do you all get your teapots? Do you have a favorite?

Right now I have one of those big metal ones with the copper bottom and some ugly old coffee mugs -- yuk. I would like to add a little more beauty to our teatime.

We do teatime in the morning, at coffee time if that makes any sense. We're all late risers so that means a late breakfast and lunch, so no sensible time for tea before supper. But there is time for a midmorning snack and readaloud. I have coffee, kids have hot chocolate or hot milk, and a piece of fruit. Got to get that five-a-day in somewhere.

Does this count?!

Oh and by the way, this Brit thinks that tortilla chips definitely go with teatime. Grandma (born 1902!)would always serve sandwiches before cake. Think of it like that.

I got teapot and service for six at our local drug/gift store. I bought it all on clearance for 50% off. The cup/saucer were marked down to $4.99 and the teapot was marked down to $15.00.

We do tea time every day, but only rarely do we manage to make it formal. For us, it's a bit more like "snack time with tea." My mother is from northern England, and I grew up going back and forth between the UK and the States. I think I was probably 8 or 9 before I realized that not everyone else had tea time!

I have an electric kettle, so the kids can boil their own water. I LOVE my electric kettle. I know... it's not very Victorian of me, but oh well! Each child has their own special mug or cup. They choose which type of tea they want from our wide variety of teas. Sometimes I'll bake, but usually it's things cream cheese and jelly sandwiches, etc. I also keep biscuits on hand. I'll wipe down the table, but if I put a cloth on it, my 13 month old would probably try to yank it right off, so that's out!

Then they play board games or card games. We've gathered quite a collection now. Originally, my plan was that we'd do our picture study or a read aloud, but the kids just really enjoy spending the time playing games together.
