Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Maryan,

We go to Holy Trinity, too! I can't WAIT until the church is done! We moved here about 2 1/2 years ago from Leesburg, where we belonged to Our Lady of Hope. Once again, we met in high school auditorium, and the church was finished AFTER we left, so we haven't belonged to a church with an actual building in about 5 years.

Which Mass do you go to? We're usually at 9:30-- I'd suggest we meet for doughnuts, but we're gluten intol But I'd love to meet you and say hi!

By the way, we run the church circut, too--We go to St. Timothy's in Chantilly for confessions-- good priests, efficent lines. We've got it down to a science.

Yep! We do too.

(But I have yet to meet Cindy!)

My parish is Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and it does have a website. It's the 4th oldest parish in the US. Check out its history on this page. St. John Neumann (then the bishop of Philadelphia) laid the cornerstone for the "new" (current) church August 15, 1852.

Just today my 17 yr. old son was working at the church helping to clean up the basement (which we all refer to as the catacombs!). It's amazing down there as it still has a dirt floor. It's not level at all, it's just the hill it was built on. Anyway he brought home some pictures and I scanned then in and out them up on a webpage. The first picture was taken in 1867...that's 100 years before I was even born! The large church building to the left is the church that still stands today (the one Neumann laid the cornerstone for) and the smaller church on the right was torn down to build the convent and school that you see in the bottom picture (that picture isn't dated but I estimate it to be the early 1900s). In the far right distance of both picture you can see St. Joseph's (mentioned on the history page). In the first picture it doesn't have a steeple yet.

Do take a look if you have time. It's a awesome bit of American Catholic history.

Of course it pales in comparison to the church in Jane's town in England that dates from the 12th century as I recall.   But's it's still cool!

Michelle, the basement at our church was still undone when I was growing up and I remember being horribly afraid to go down there when I was little. It wound around like tunnels and there were stories floating around about it. I wont share those.

Oh ours has plenty of stories as well! I wish I could explain better what it's like. When you go down there it just looks like someone took the church and plopped it on the side of a hill. In some areas you have to duck to even be able to walk. I can't imagine how it could ever be finished though I'm sure there's a way, but you wouldn't be able to get any big equipment down there to dig!

Hi Anne!
We're at Holy Trinity because my husband helps out his Dad with the Mass set-up, so we only go to 8:15! (Although we'll be at his brother's parish this Sunday). Once the new parish is up, I'm not sure where we'll go to Mass . And we faithfully eat the donuts after the 8:15!!

And...I think we've met a while ago. Don't worry if you've forgotten. I have more a reason to remember you because I taught your husband in biology class my first year teaching -- my only year teaching that subject, thank goodness!

By the way tell you MIL that I make a cake recipe that she gave me for pineapple, banana, chocolate chip cake that I love! (No gluten free here!)

We are parishioners of All Saints Church. It's an ugly church, and the new church that is planned doesn't have much improvement. But that's not why we go, right?

I think I've actually been there! I have cousins that live in Manassas (Haymarket?) and I think that was their parish. It's a pretty unique building...

Yes, this parish used to carry the load for many surrounding towns, including Haymarket.

Our family calls the look of the church as a "spaceship". And when they added a blue roof, I don't think it's too far off.

Oh Jenn, oh you're so right about "that's not why we go..." My mom was shocked when she saw All Saints for the first time (coming from the North East) -- she thought it looked like a "ski lodge," but the blue roof definitely threw off that anaology.

I do miss hearing the choir and organ at 10:30 at All Saints...

Here's my church: St. Francis de Sales. They put Father Kelly's "Father's Corner" from the bulletin on the website--he's a hoot. If you have a minute, go read this week's (it's linked in the sidebar on the homepage) before they change it for the weekend.

Our church, Our Lady of Victories in Brisbane, Australia is a bi-lingual parish.

It is Polish with Polish priest but there is an English community to which we are a part of - here is our website.

It is a lovely spanish style church, all white with a blue cross that glows at night and seen for miles because it is on one of the highest hills in the city overlooking the river.

It was originally built in honor of WWI soldiers, but was given to the Polish community 50years ago last November.
