I did not have a big party on my 40th, and that was my choice.
I love birthdays and parties. But my dad died on his 40th birthday, a few hours after we came home from his big party. And I was scared to celebrate or in any way mark my 40th. It seems stupid now. I didn't listen to Him and I should have!
I did have a nice little party this year for the 45th. And someone had better throw me a huge one for my 50th!!!

Thanks so much for your responses. What lovely parties and celebrations you all had...and it's such a credit to your dear husbands and friends.
I'm taking Marihalojen's approach and doing a 3 day celebration..actually it will be 4. I like to claim St. Patrick and St. Joseph as my patrons since my birthday falls so close to their days. Plus our family takes and "birthday octave" approach to birthdays. One day just isn't enough!
Dh is taking me to a B&B, one that we used to go before our son was born. And I'll be on retreat the weekend before. This is quite momentous, as this will really be the first time I'm away from ds, except my overnight hospital stay last year at this time.
As for the party...not sure yet. Ladies only? Family? My house isn't big enough for friends and family with children combined, since we can't spill outside in this weather yet. But I'm really looking forward to the big day.

Oh Jenn! I'm right behind you! My birthday's in April. Only I don't think there will be any party. We just moved here last year, so we only know a few families well enough from church/homeschooling to even invite anyone. Besides, my husband isn't thrilled about inviting anyone over here. I didn't do a whole lot for his 40th, so I don't expect a whole lot, either. I don't remember the particulars (it was almost 7 years ago), but I was probably pregnant!

Not to hijack the thread, but our anniversary is December 5, the night St. Nicholas visits. Isn't that neat? St. Nicholas actually visited our wedding reception. One day, I'll dredge up the photo, scan it, and add it to my blog.

Tina, wish I could come over and celebrate!
I was unable to give the big party my dh deserved for his 40th. My son was a little over 3 months old, never sleeping due to reflux and allergy problems, I had chronic mastitis, slowly recovering from my c-section. I was able to muster a family birthday, but that's about it. And many people couldn't come. We talked about this the other day, and I apologized again for such a small party. And he didn't even remember all that was going on with my life, just that the birthday was very nice. He then realized that because HE was so tired that the birthday party, even as little as it was, was such a change of venue and a treat that he had fond memories. Now wasn't that nice and sweet of him to say?
And I want to see those St. Nick reception pictures. I had the Dutch Speculaas cookies for my wedding favors, but it was June!

Lots of spring birthdays here! My big 4-0 is on the 19th of March. Dh wants to take me to NYC for a longish weekend. We still haven't planned it, but that's what we're leaning toward. He threw me a big surprise 30th which was fun but overwhelming! I told him I do want to be at home on my actual birthday. I want the kids to be part of my actual bday celebration.

Jenn, I did not see this thread when i posted over on the Wiser forum. I will be 40 next week, and we are having a huge party. This is not like me AT ALL!! But I am excited, we put on the invites NO GIFTS, and that made me feel so much more comfortable. Now I feel like we can all just celebrate life together without all the attention on me.
As for the Lent thing, we are having the party on Sunday, although my b-day does fall the Feast of The Chair of Peter, so "legally" we could have the party, but I opted for Sunday!
