Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK so I have a question for you on that...and am hoping I won't be sorry I asked. I have a friend who maintains that sandals are not modest. She points out that some men are very um.."inspired" by women's feet. I truly had not considered this and am still wearing sandals (well, not right now as it's only 24 degress at the moment). Any thoughts on modesty and sandals? Helen or anyone?

Unfortunately, some men are "inspired" by just about anything. Long hair, short hair, sandals, boots, skirts, pants, elbows, whatever. I might be speaking out of turn here, because I haven't made the leap to skirts yet, and I don't have as developed of an understanding about Mary-like modesty and all that means. But I think that not wearing sandals for that reason is a bit much.

After all, Mary most probably wore sandals herself. I thoroughly agree, that some folks will get the wrong impression no matter what you wear ... but then I tend to wear Birks all summer long and those aren't really sexy unless you're into the granola-crunchy-hippy look of the 70s!

I have a knack for wearing them all winter too!   Crunchy is a good thing.

Summer is so much easier. Light skirts and simple cotton shirts. Sandals. I camped in skirts last summer.

You still need a cotton slip under most skirts but it's cooler than shorts i think.

My hope this summer is to find more elbow length shirts as Helen mentioned somewhere.

I think the skirts are cooler than shorts and I go camping in skirts.

The shirts are a problem to find. I've been meaning to suggest that if you are serious about longer sleeved shirts for the summer, look for long sleeve t shirts and 3/4 sleeve shirts during the winter. They are very scarce during the summer. (Unless it becomes fashionable.)

One of those companies, LL BEan or Lands End or ...no its Eddie Bauer. I buy some of there long sleeve t-shirts and fold them so that the sleeves are between my elbow and wrist. I find that my summer shirts don't have the longevity of winter clothes.

My favorite 3/4 shirt was from Coldwater Creek. But, its not my favorite anymore with a sling. I'm finding I need a slightly longer shirt than the coldwater creek boat neck 3/4 sleeve shirt. (The sling pulls at the boatneck.)

I hadn't read this before sending out tonight's Mary Vitamin I thought it was interesting today when I read Ven Mary of Agreda's description of Our Lady's footwear. I included the quote at the end of the MV just in case of interest.

Isn't that funny that you're talking about that!

Here's the quote
“Our Queen was accustomed, for the sake of modesty, to wear shoes, which covered her feet and served as a sort of stocking. They were made of a certain plant used by the poor and something like hemp or mallow, dried and woven into a coarse and strong texture, which, though poor, was yet cleanly and appropriate.” (498)

Does anyone have any suggestions for postpartum skirts for the spring? It seems like everything is so fitted!

Katherine, I have a few prarie skirts that have a drawstring waist. I bought size 4/6, and was able to wear them the day after Molly was born, not because I was so skinny or svelt, but because of the cut of the skirt. Also, those roll waists that are so popular in maternity clothes now, Old Navy sells them on their gauchos, which are pretty skirty to me, they work great post partum too. I have a pair that I wore last week, and the day before Molly was born!

Katherine and all,

When I am postpartum (which I will be this Summer, too, as my baby is due in April!)....and, really, *anytime*, I buy skirts and tops at our local Goodwill. It has amazed me the quality and variety one can find there!

This is very economical for us (most skirts can be had for less than $5 and blouses for less than $4), and I also like the idea of recycling. It seems that, whenever I buy "new", the label tells me that the garment has been made in a country where I worry about sweatshop and child labor; buying from Goodwill avoids this issue.

Oh....and I ask all my friends here to pray for me and my little babe. I've started to get my usual PUPPS rash and am getting a bit uncomfortable!

Pax vobiscum,

Renee

I think questions regarding the modesty of 3/4 sleeves and shoe styles already indicate a great committment to modesty. These questions are probably best answered by each woman asking:

What would Mary wear?

repeatedly while shopping.

I don't think these questions should cause any undue anxiety. If we are blind to certain sins, the old boy tries to make us more blind. If we are sensitive to practicing virtue the old boy tries to make us painfully sensitive to make us stop practicing virtue.

My earlier quote was taken slightly out of context. Our Lady was requesting from St. Joseph the ability to walk barefoot on her way to Presenting the Lord in the Temple.

The Franciscans traditionally wear sandals as do Mother Teresa's order of sisters.
The conventual Franciscans wore shoes.

Renee,

I do thrift shops -- particularly ARC and Salvation Army -- I avoid Goodwill only because the Mormons run it and I don't think they need my money....at least not as much as the Catholics and the Retarded Citizens!

But, I got snow pants for my 3 littles - spent about $15 total and BOY have we needed those this year!

I found some nice linen skirts last year at Target. Don't know when I will be able to wear them this year (no elastic in the waist, but one or two of them were already "too big" when I bought it). I'm going to be making some for me to use post partum, though...

I'm due in June, so I'll need summery maternity clothes, as well as summery post-partum stuff...lol. Reason #236485874 I really wish I just had spring babies...lol.

Rachel (who has March, April, and May babies now)

In a way summer is easier, b/c you don't have the "shoe/boot issue." There are so many practical, comfortable, nice-looking, inexpensive sandals out there.

On the other hand, you have the hot weather / modesty / light-fabrics / showing skin-thing to consider.

I have LOTS of really nice dresses from thrift stores.
In the morning I wear lightweight cardigan, then shed it as the day gets warmer. I tend not to like skirts/binding around my waist in the warm weather, but I do wear some skirts.

When I'm nursing, I have 2 or 3 nursing dresses that I wear CONSTANTLY along with a few skirts.

When I go out in public, I won't wear sleeveless, but around the house I will if it's really hot. I have a couple short sleeve button down shirts that I put on over my sleeveless dresses/shirts if I run out for an errand.

I don't wear slips. I try to only buy dresses with fabrics that don't require them....a bit darker, or busier, or a bit thicker.

I didn't know Goodwill is Mormon! You learn all kinds of little tidbits of info here! We have "Desseret" and I know they are Mormon, but didn't know about Goodwill.

I hadn't heard that before either...I checked out their website, and it says they were founded by a Methodist Minister. No mention of it's ever changing affiliation.
I'd love to know for sure, because we frequent Goodwill here, and donate quite often as well.
