Elizabeth, we'll know spring is just around the corner when the tights/boots thread finally ends.

I still can't wear a dress because of nursing my 21 month old, bless his little soul!!
I love Eddie Bauer jean skirts and modest tees from Old Navy, or blouses. Light sweaters from the Gap are great too to throw on if it gets chilly n the evenings!
Are you really thinking about summer already, I'm just pining for Spring

I'm not trying to hijack this thread, but does anyone feel like they want to design clothes that are modest but totally practical and funky, fresh and feminine?
I feel like I have all these ideas and things I want to try to design that would be fun and lovely.
I just lack a lot of the skill despite working on some skills....mostly, I lack time with dh gone....
I would love to design some fun skirts for summer with bright colors and prints but would other Moms wear them? Are you all more quiet in your color selection? I love bright florals and funky, fun prints - would any of you ever wear something like that????

I am a bit more conservative...but those conservative colors look good on me...If I were thinner...taller...umm... can't think of any more...haha I have to be careful of what I put on sometimes as certain colors or patterns can overwhelm my 5 ft 3 frame with large nursing chest...kwim? But, I can immagine that this is not the norm for everyone.
I have never seen you, but I'll bet that you look smashing in something funky, bright or floral. I say go for it and have looots of fun! Being creative will make you feel good inside...and out! You better take pictures! I would love to see what you come up with Maria. I'll bet your fashions are as fun as you are!!

I have Donna's same problems.. only a smidgen taller..
But I like bold colors.. but not necessarily day-glo
Since I have mostly solid colors for tops.. if a pattern was one that would go with 2 or 3 tops I already then yes I would wear it.
hmmm that reminds me I have a printed knit in neutral shades that would make a lovely skirt if I could just get to it.. hmmm

Another question about summer skirts...how long are yours? Do you wear lightweight long skirts or knee length?

I am a big woman, and I enjoy printed skirts. I pair them with a straight, solid colored top. I think it helps to balance me out as I am very large busted. Also, prints hide the crud that I seem to accumulate during the day.
Personally, all my skirts come to mid calf or longer. I have a hard time being modest in even knee length. If the skirt is straight I can't seem to keep it modest while sitting, kneeing, doing chores, if it is full, it can lift up to much in a breeze (or while swinging) In summer I just use lighter fabrics. I like cotton sheeting, gauze, muslin, chambray and some rayons for hot weather.

My summer skirts are just below my knee and I really like them. That said, I'm wondering whether I should switch to something longer.

My skirts are also just below my knee (even in winter for the most part). But that's because I am only 5'1", and I just cannot seem to pull off the longer skirts. Even with petites or skirts that are hemmed appropriately, I just look silly in the longer skirts IMO. So if anyone knows where to get slightly longer skirts that work well for shrimps like me, I am all ears!
Oh, and Maria, if you want to design and sell some feminine and funky clothing for petites, I'll be your first customer.

Maria I think you would have many people interested in these! Skills can improve - trust me I know. Time I can't help you with. If you figure out how to gain more of it let me know...I'm interested.
I wish, wish, wish, I could teach some of you other ladies to sew. I am going through my fabric stash right now (I'm on a fabric buying diet - I promised dh I would not buy anymore fabric until I used a significant amount of what I already have) and making choices for my spring/summer wardrobe which will basically consist of knit nursing dresses. . .which truly are VERY easy to make.
I plan to travel to a few conferences this year so knit dresses will be my best option for discreet nursing on the plane and arriving wrinkle free.
I wear sandals as soon as the weather allows for it and don't go back to shoes (except for working out) until the weather gets colder.
OK so I have a question for you on that...and am hoping I won't be sorry I asked. I have a friend who maintains that sandals are not modest. She points out that some men are very um.."inspired" by women's feet. I truly had not considered this and am still wearing sandals (well, not right now as it's only 24 degress at the moment). Any thoughts on modesty and sandals? Helen or anyone?

I make them. Bias cut out of cotton batiste.
Cutting them on the bias makes them stretch and the cotton batiste is light and flowing.
I bought 10 yards of white cotton batiste on major sale last week from fabric.com (my last fabric purchase for a while because as I said earlier I'm on a fabric diet) and it's perfect for slips.
There are online directions for making cotton half slips here.
God bless!

No thoughts. I would never have thought!!!
But like you I wear sandals year long, reserving tennis shoes and slip-ons for the few winter months we have.

Oh, golly....I sure hope they're modest. I start wearing mine when it's in the mid-50's. I actually considered wearing them on a 50 degree day we had in the last month. My mom says I was crazy for sandals even as a toddler!

I imagine I'm in the minority here, but I wear long sleeves and skirts in the summer. I strive for more summer-y looks, but am looking to improve on that too. I'm also prayerfully discerning whether to move from long to 3/4 sleeves for that warmer season. My husband doesn't have an opinion on the matter; so, I'm praying wisdom on how I ought to proceed.

I know what you mean but she made quite a case for it (and she's not radical or anything and in fact even wears pants . . . ) but I was thinking today don't some religious orders wear sandals?
I suppose you COULD make a case for certain s*xier sandals being immodest but I dunno. I like cute sandals not high heels but strappy yes.

Michele, That's an interesting thought. I had a similiar discussion not long ago with an old friend of mine. She is a non-demoniational Christian, and they only wear brown or blue, only dresses, and they don't cut their hair or wear it down outside of home. Only we were not discussing sandles, we were discussing how some men are, 'inspired' as you put it, by a woman with lots of coverage, kwim?
Where can we draw the line? I hate to sound, weird, but didn't Mary even appear barefoot in some apparitions? I'm interested to see where this topic goes.
Kelly, I'm begining to struggle with sleeve length a bit now too, as we look ahead to summer. I just won a bunch of really nice long summery maternity dresses on ebay, they are all short sleeve. I have a few cute, light sweaters, but I don't know how this comfort seeking creature will do in August, at 8 months pregnant, and a swealtering 95 degrees outside.
Oh, and about slips, I just bought this maternity/nursing full slip, I'll give a review once I recieve it. I was really looking for a full slip since I can't tolerate anything around my waist right now.

What I've tried to do is wear sweaters over short sleeves as long as possible. We don't have A/C in our house; so, it is not out of the ordinary for me to go around the house in just the s/s on those really hot days. On those days, I wear a sweater when I go out of the house.
Really, I don't think there is any hard-n-fast on this; do as the Holy Spirit guides you, as your husband desires (as long as it's not sinful obviously!), and as your circumstances necessitate.

Unfortunately, some men are "inspired" by just about anything. Long hair, short hair, sandals, boots, skirts, pants, elbows, whatever. I might be speaking out of turn here, because I haven't made the leap to skirts yet, and I don't have as developed of an understanding about Mary-like modesty and all that means. But I think that not wearing sandals for that reason is a bit much.

I am not dresses only, but I love skirts in spring and summer for comfort. I wear them below the knee. I have had good luck in recent years at Target especially and occasionally Walmart. As long as skirts are 'trendy,' the discounters will carry them inexpensively.
I wear espadrilles or flat sandals. If you're looking to hide the toes for modesty, espadrilles are a nice, comfy choice.
