Yes! Yes! Count us in, Cay!! Colleen just told me about this camping trip this evening (after she got off the phone with you in WalMart ) and we LOVE the idea! We camp often, and actually, we just sold our giant pop-up because we like tent camping BETTER.

I am not able to be there in August ( I am going to be in the Dominican Republic) but I would love to go on Labor day weekend. I'll talk to dh and see what he says.

Somehow I missed the "Is Labor Day weekend good?" question. That works for us! Is that the plan? I'm thinking that with a larger group we may need to reserve campsites soon. Depending on the park and the weekend, things might fill up (unless we're gonna hike to the very primitive sites somewhere -- *not* my vote).

We are getting short on time and you're right, Janette, campsites need to be reserved.
I don't want to push anyone to a decision or my vote to be the only one. We're had other suggestions come up.
But there is a campsite in Rusk, Tx with an old-fashion train ride to boot. Click this link and you'll see the marking where Rusk is located.
TX State Railroad State Park
Of course I haven't checked on cabins and if dh can't come to pull our camper this may all change on my end.
I might have to bunk in Alice's tent!!!
TX State Railroad Park was recently made a state park so it should be nice and the cabins would be cheap. The ones in LA were $55 a night (this was a for a regular house size cabin complete with kitchen, stove, microwave, 2 bedrooms, bath, and living area). Super nice cribs.
After the hurricanes the rates went up to like $95.00 per night. I suspect TX state parks went up as well due to all us Louisianians who lived in the state parks for weeks on end.
This is, of course, just a suggestion...
I believe we already got a hand count of where everyone is located and North TX seemed to be the best location. (Or was that just my observance? Please say something if you have more accuracy than I do at looking at a map. Highly possible.)
There were also a lot of suggestions for Ark (and did I say enough how I LOVE Ark?) I'm just looking at most people being in TX and NW TX seems to be central to TX/LA/AR/OK. I believe we have one or two in Mississippi. They would be driving the furthest.

This one is not far from Rusk...still NW TX. If someone could check on prices, we can compare the two.
It's a four hour drive from my spot on the map and I think Marcie and Colleen and Alice would have to add an additional two hours.

Well, I'm fiddling and here are the fees for:
Rusk
and for:
Tyler
They both have group dining hall for $75.00.
You'll notice on the first link you can get a Bluebonnet Pass!!! It dawned on me that we might want to look at doing this in April (in the future, I mean). It would be spring, cooler, and we could enjoy the bluebonnets while the East enjoys the bluebells.
The only thing is we always head to Toledo in April for a week with the family. I'm usually burnt out of camping after that. At least for a month...

It looks like Tyler would have more availability/options. If I were casting a vote, it would be there.

Not trying to complicate things...but I think that Tyler has shelters, which we find very helpful in addition to our tent.
Of course, I'm kinda new to the camping thing so don't poke fun at me!

I just found this thread. What is the date for this "campout." I'm in San Antonio and would love to come (after speaking w/ dh of course). Although I've NEVER in my life been camping!!
But I'm willing to live in the wild if it means meeting some of you ladies!! I'll check the earlier posts to see if I can find the date. TIA!

Let's see...Labor Day is Sept. 3...so it would be the weekend of Sept. 1st.
Lillian, we'd love to see you and your beautiful family. Please come.

Well, of the two choices, Cay, I vote for Tyler. Some of the track along the Rusk/Palestine Railroad has been damaged by the severe rain we've gotten. The trains are closed till at least the end of August. In September they are being taken over by a private company and no one knows what prices/schedules/etc will be like after that. I guess that we could camp in Rusk, but we'd have to forget the train rides.
We've taken the train ride before and really enjoyed it. They have a few volunteers who dress up in period clothing and can answer questions. It would be fun to do in the spring.

Cay and all,
Please keep me posted of what you decide. I am heading for the Dominican Republic next week and don't know how frequently I'll have internet access. I should be back in late August.
Tyler sounds great to me. It is only about 1 1/2 from here

Janette and I got to talk yesterday in person about the camping trip.
She will be checking with Tyler, TX campsite to see if they can accomadate our group on Labor Day Weekend.
Mark your calendars.
My dh said he would do a gumbo one day if everyone brings their own meat (chicken) to put into the pot. He's becoming quite the gumbo chef.
Janette, could you see if they have cooking facilities? I am capable of cooking rice over a fire if need be. Believe it or not.

Ladies, sorry for the delay in posting! I've been playing phone tag with the reservation people and also had some things confused -- but now I *think* that I've got it all straight!
Tyler State Park
Pdf map of park showing different camping areas
Tyler *can* accomodate us, but we should move fast just in case. Right now, they have 26 Tent sites (water only -- areas 5, 6, 7 & 8 on map), 4 screened shelters (area 9), and 25 trailer sites (area 4 -- "blackjack" fully paved area). That's all they've got.
The tent and screened shelter sites can be reserved online at www.reserveamerica.com. Choose "Texas" as the State and the park name is "Tyler State Park." Then it will take you to the options. You can also call The Texas State Campgrounds Reservation number (512-389-8900) to reserve. *If you want a trailer site,* you have to call the Reservation number. The ReserveAmerica website says that no trailer sites are available. *However,* the lady on the phone assured me this evening that there *are* 25 trailer sites available. (I think that this is because teh blackjack area is used for groups and overflow only.) If you call, you can (and should) choose the "call me back" option, because the wait time is always looong and they really will call you back.

There are fire rings/grills at the tent and shelter sites. I don't think that there is anything at the trailer area. They do have a full kitchen at one of the pavilions, but it has to be rented at $75/day.
Cay, I'm so impressed at your rice cooking abilities! We have rice all the time, but I couldn't make it without my rice cooker! I've burned it or made it overflow every time I've tried.
Questions??

I just wanted to check in and see if TX is where was definitely decdided. I live in Northern Arkansas and would have an idea of a beautiful place for camping. It's so close to Labor Day I am assuming everything is decded. Well maybe next year.
