We live in Arkansas. The suggestions for camp grounds already mentioned in Arkansas are wonderful. I might also suggest a few others.
Blanchard Springs Caverns-great hiking trails, creeks, small fishing lake with trout and best of all caverns with guided tours. This would be well worth seeing even if it were decided not to camp here. The camping would be primitive--no electricity, I think it has water though. I do not think they take reservations either. However, not too far from here would be another camping spot, can't think of the name right now, but would have more room, however, even more primitive. For those that don't want to camp, I'm not sure what would be available.
Bull Shoals State Park-This is on the river-great trout fishing. Some sites have electricity. Not far down the road is a fishing lodge on the river-called Gastons. Not sure of what other accomodations there would be if you did not want to camp. I do know that I have seen motels. There maybe cabins to rent too. There is also Bull Shoals Lake right up the highway-probably too cold in the fall for swimming, but great for boating and also fishing. This would be about 45 miles from Blanchard Springs, if you wanted to see the caverns.
Buffalo River National Park-canoeing, fishing, beautiful scenery. Some reservations taken. Also, there are cabins available for rent. There are several hiking trails. This is about 40 miles from Blanchard Springs if you wanted to camp here and see the caverns too.
Just some more options. Arkansas is called The Natural State. For those of you that could stay longer than the few days with the group, I think could well make a week traveling Arkansas. We are also not too far from Branson, Missouri.
Love,
Margaret

I haven't forgotten about this.
After our trip to Disney I'll get back on the ball.
Looking at the geographical residence of our members, North Louisiana/south Arkansas would be central BUT most members are in TX. East TX would be fine with me.
What say all of you?
And what is the best camp sites there?
Before Christmas we went to Rusk, TX-Palestine, TX to ride the train. Fantastic trip! There's a campground there but I'm not sure of the offerings. I think it's a state park. They were going to close it down and flood the area (that's why we hurried to make the train ride) then decided to keep it open.
Here's the link: Historic State Railroad and Campground (If you click on the map, they have a milage chart from some of the larger cities in TX and LA).
I know my dh would be game. He mentioned us taking the camper there.

I mentioned this thread to my DH and he seemed interested. I *personally* have NEVER been camping, but it sounds fun. I know that I don't know most of you as well as you know eachother, but our family is interested in joining you once we have more info on cost/location/timing.
We're in Houston.

Cay,
I've been out of the loop enjoying baby Anthony but you can count us in on the plans. I think your choice of the railorad state park is awesome--I was going to mention Tyler State Park in Texas. I've never been there camping but my sil is a veteran camper and LOVES to camp there in the fall or the spring...Just another idea! Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Keep us posted. We never have been "campers" but might try it just to get to meet everyone. So long as you promise not to laugh!

Since Arkansas was under consideration, I wanted to let you all know that we recently drove from Central Texas to Bentonville, Arkansas (about 1/2 an hour north of the Devil's Den State Park that Jennifer mentioned.) The drive took us about 9 hours - the time included a stop for lunch at a restaurant. That area of Arkansas is very pretty and for those of you who don't get fall color, it might be really nice for a change.

I am in Southern TN. I might very well be interested in this as well. If we can swing it financially, I would love to go. It would be me and 5 children. So, you can add us to the maybe list.
God bless,

I'm headed on a road trip with kids from Alabama to Nebraska and then back. If the dates and location work, we might be able to join in.

My dh takes a test this coming Wed. The job is pretty much promised to him but he'll have to make his decision by month's end. If he decides to take this new job, it will start the end of Sept. and I have no idea what the new work schedule will mean for us.
Does Labor Day weekend work for most of you and your dh's work schedule? Or do you usually have major family plans during that time?

As for now, Labor Day weekend is fine for us. Knowing us we would be willing to drive just about anyway. In fact, Cay, I think I was in your neck of the woods just this past weekend. Thanks for planning this Cay! Looking forward to meeting many of you.

I wanted to assure all members that our Mini-4Real Conference in Louisiana is not taking the place of these Autumn '07 plans.
Plans for this are still being discussed for a cooler autumn month.
But, if you're available for both, we'd LOVE to have you for Tea in August and camping in Autumn.
