Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I do love my coffee, but I have the same reactions as Willa with too much caffeine, my blood sugar goes haywire.

I am relieved to see that others enjoy imbibing. It's really a social thing here. I love having it with dinner, and dh and I have had very special dates and the bottle of wine marks that dinner with fondness (label or cork keeping is fun to do).

My mil had some history in the family and so doesn't touch the stuff. It's a family joke, because she puts out the cordial glasses for wine...these teeny tiny glasses...and then is shocked when I had two or three at one dinner.

When I was following my son's allergy diet when I was nursing (no eggs, wheat or milk) my treats were wine, diet coke, coffee with Coffee Rich and dark chocolate. Family functions like birthday parties I just would put in my request for a glass of wine so I could at least have some kind of celebration.

Oh, I knew you were a kindred spirit, Nina!

1. Caffeine -- definitely coffee, usually a couple of cups in the morning and sometimes one in the afternoon. Any more and my blood sugar drops through the basement. Especially I like lattes when I can get them. I like chai tea once in a while.   I've never really liked soda except for diet Pepsi,

Oh my gosh, yes, Willa--we are. I don't like any soda either...but my Diet Pepsi!
DH claims that he knew he wanted to marry me on our first date for several reasons, one of which was that I was game to have a glass of Guiness with him!
This is so true! I still can't stand Guiness (or any beer, really) but I have forced myself to try a couple of times for my husband, who insists it is the BEST.   I just can't see how people drink this stuff like water in the British Isles!

Well, i do enjoy the occasional beer, but Guiness is a different story! We always have some at St. Patrick's Day, but my dh perfers Newcastle (not only the beer, but the soccer team as well).

Gotta run dd to piano. More later.

Caffeine -- ought to just insert an IV. Since my day begins at 4 a.m., the first place I head is the coffee pot. Two or three large mugs of coffee ASAP. To keep going until bed, I usually ask DH to bring Pepsi home in the evening. Both are a large reason I'm overweight because I need a lot of sugar & milk, otherwise coffee is just gross to me, and diet Pepsi just isn't the same.

Alcohol -- I haven't had anything in a while because I was pregnant. It has to be sweet though....Arbor Mist (Blackberry Merlot). I enjoyed the Hazelnut liquer I used for Elizabeth's Lamb cake recipe last Easter.

Coffee- I drink almost 1 cup a day only becuase, even though I really do like it, my stomach feels gross if I try to have more. Very rarey my dh will ask me to brew some in the early evening and then I will have about 1/2 a cup with him.

Alcohol- I LOVE red wine. My father really taught me to appreciate it. If it were up to me, I would have a glass every other day. However, I've been pregnant/nursing for about 5 of the last 12 years , so I've been limited, though I admit I will have the occasional glass even nursing. Can't pass up a pisco sour (pisco is a Peruvian spirit), mojito (I am also half Cuban) or caipirina (probably not spelled right-it's Brazilian)and one other cocktail, also Peruvian whose name eludes me right now...
Love cold beer with Chinese food, usually non-alcoholic.

Oh, I forgot to mention beer. I love Blue Moon (with an orange wedge, of course) and Fat Tire. Both are great on a hot summer evening--very refreshing.

My girls love going to the liquor store with me and looking at all the different bottles and names related to saints & orders. Franengelico is an all time favorite bottle and I bought my husband a bottle of Benedictine for Christmas. He really likes it. I’m not to fond of it but it tasted great in our King's Bread! I suspect it would be great in Chai as well.

Pisco Sours are delicious, aren't they, Maria? I'll bet you make a mean mojito, yum!

As for caipirinas...they are the only thing that can induce me to dance, but only with Columbians! Gotta love sailors, the Brazilians brought the drinks that night, the Columbian the music, and we cleared the tiki hut of tables and chairs and had a ball!

I tried a new drink last night while out saying goodbye to friends, a Lynchburg Lemonade. The margaritas were gross (I think they spilled extra salt into my glass ) so I had to switch to something else and I can highly recommend Lynchburg Lemonades now. We should have moved years ago, we're only going 98 miles away but the goodbye parties have been great! I think the best goodbye parties are the ones where you plan the welcome parties at the same time with the same people!

Caffeine: yes (well, not now as I'm 28 wks pg). Preferably in the form of French or Italian roast coffee. Tea, as well (my husband is from Ireland), strong and with milk.

Alcohol: no. I've never had a tolerance. Plus, it worsens my tendency to migraines.

Another question: Who's a chocolate addict????? (yeah, I am....bad)

I had an idea for following the Liturgical Year with a suggested bread recipe and a wine/liquour for each feast or saint until someone pointed out that it might not be welcome for those that are teetotallers. It never even occurred to me!

For that very reason I do not do salt in my margarita. I've had too many experiences like that, and I tell you, I don't like drinking seawater!

Nope. Not when they are all teetotal Methodists .

Caffeine: Coffee ... used to be mostly instant (are the British the only people who will still tolerate instant coffee?), but since my last pregnancy it has to be proper coffee. Starbuck's caramel macchiato is my favourite caffeinated treat, but I like to experiment with different ground coffees. I rarely drink more than one coffee in a day. Tea ... three or four mugs a day. Coke ... diet coke in the summer, rarely drink it in winter.

Alcohol: Wine, red or white (especially a nice chardonnay); Pimms and lemonade in the summer; Baileys; a very occasional cold beer, again only in the summer. Definitely no Guinness (ugh!).

Anyone want to comment on what alcoholism "looks like" or how to define it...or should I start another thread?   I think this is a worthy discussion----but I suppose not apropos of this thread.

I say start a new thread. This one is fun and lighthearted and makes me smile, if not Laugh Out Loud!
The other topic is rather more serious and deserving of its own thread to expand upon.

Coffee: Yes. That's only been for the last 8 years. Couldn't stand the stuff before!

Alcohol: VERY infrequently, like -- twice a year? I like Bacardi Limon. Back in the college days? Beer, Windsor, Tequila, Boone's Farm, and T.J. Swans.....

Caffeine - One of my vices is my Starbucks Toffee Nut Ristretto White Mocha. The Ristretto shot, which I read about in their book, is the sweetest part of the espresso shot so it's not so bitter. I'm also a fan of either a Coke or a Coke Zero.

Alcohol - Being either pregnant or breast feeding since November 2002 I haven't been a big drinker. But I do enjoy an Appletini if we go out for an evening out without the kids. Also, my dad is really into "good" wines, so when we go over to my parents' house every Sunday we enjoy a lovely oaky, buttery Chardonnay. Nothing beats a really chilled glass of Chardonnay!
