If I drink more than one cup of real coffee, I feel like I'm gonna have a heart attack! I get so hyper and shaky - I am miserable. It was not always so. I used to drink real coffee all the time until I was pregnant with dd2, when I switched to decaf. Since then I was either prego or nursing until dd4 was 1yr old. It is very strange, but my body can't handle the caffeine anymore. I was never a soda drinker. I enjoy my 3 MUGS of decaf everymorning Otherwise I drink lots of water and Roibuschtee occasionally.
Dh grew up in wine country here in Germany and his Opa had a little vinyard up behind his house. It was a sign of 'young manhood' when the boys were old enough to carry the baskets full of grapes down the mountain on their backs. So we always have a supply of red wine from dh's papa(who only drinks coffee or this wine, I have never seen him drink anything else!). I like it very much, but only drink one or two glasses a week, usually on Sunday. I like german beer too, but refuse to drink my calories!

CAFFEINE: Put me in the coffee junkie category...I absolutely LOVE coffee -- Grind my own and drink half a pot every morning. I too follow the "no coffee after noon rule." I know I'm pregnant when my coffee tastes yucky - I resume drinking one cup a day second trimester, but give it up again for the last two months (but that's not because of the caffeine, but the amount of sugar I put in my coffee!!) No migraines here ever. I also drink when nursing --I 'm not sure how I would wake up in the morning! Definitely a Dunkin Donuts over Starbucks (starbucks is too bitter)
ALCOHOL: Since I'm a sweets kind of person, alcohol doesn't have the appeal for me. My sisters are wine connoisseurs, so sometimes I feel a little "unsophisticated." But since pregnancy takes up so much of my life now...I don't have to feel like I have to give up something besides my coffee! And they always miss wine!
The rest of the day I'm downing water and an occasional raspberry tea!

OK, I guess I'm a bit more hard-core than many here....
caffeine -- only coffee, strong and black -- one cup in the morning and one in the evening; won't have decaf in my house ; tea during lent -- herbal or caffeinated, but never any sugar or milk....
alcohol -- love a glass of wine (red) with dinner; also don't care for sweet drinks at all. Enjoy a shot of scotch or bourbon when it's cold out. Beer makes me feel bloated

Caffeine: Very rarely do I drink coffee unless its a white chocolate carmel latte' (does that count?) When I do have coffee it's never more than a cup or two. I have a sister in love who drinks over a pot a day! I drink Diet Pepsi for caffeine, which I really need to cut back on and increase my water consumption. I also like tea but most of it is decaffeinated, I will usually have tea in the morning, afternoon and then a cup before bed.
Alcohol: Never, not anymore anyways. I cut that branch off 4 years ago when I became serious about my relationship with Jesus. Before that it still wasn't much. I don't like beer and wine so it was an occassionaly wine cooler (much sweeter) or a bull dog which is a mixed drink. I don't miss it at all.

Caffeine: Coffee daily and Coke when I can.
Alcohol:In moderation I like just about any decent wine or champagne, I like to sample good microbrewery beers, Kahlua, Bailey's Irish Cream and Amaretto are my liquers of choice, and as far as liquor I really only like rum drinks or margaritas. Can't stand bourbon or gin (gag).

Coffee for me, just the smell perks me up in the morning - but I must have half and half or cream in it. My body rejects low-fat milk
I grew up with a Father who made his own wine every year (and still does, matter of fact), yet I can't say that I'm a big wine fan (although I LOVE cooking with it!) DH enjoys wine occasionally with dinner. As far as any alcohol goes, if it is sweet (liquors, daquiri, sweet wines etc)than I might indulge occasionally. We definitely always like to make nice mixed drinks, and have some good wine and beer around when we entertain!

Caffeine: I love coffee! We do strong coffee here - always whole bean, never pre-ground. For a while my dh even roasted the beans himself! (Too busy with teaching lately. ) However, I am currently not drinking it - felt like I needed to give myself a break for a while.
Alcohol: I like some wines - generally the not-so-dry kind. I never liked beer until after I got married, and then learned to like dark beer. I still don't like American beer, though. I probably have 1-2 half-drinks per week when not pregnant. When I am, I only have the occasional sip.

Caffeine: I do not really like coffee, don't have a coffee maker but love those Peppermint Mochas that come out around the holidays. I really love tea but usually limit myself to 2 cups of caffeine a day, then switch to herbal.
Alcohol: I like Chianti in the reds and Riesling in the whites. Don't like beer, except for Guinness. I have one on St. Patrick's day. Margaritas are fun in the summer but we rarely make them.

Caffeine: Yes but I am more modrate now and can treat my migraines with caffeine. We prefer 1/2 decaf/half regular French Roast from Baltimore Tea and Coffee Co.
Alcohol: Like wine-dry red, margaritas, Gin and Tonics in the summer, New Grist GF beer and Powers Irish Whiskey in a cup of tea with some sugar and a squeeze of citrus in the winter. All that revealed , do not like to drink too much--which is a blessing with my family history. As far as the bar bill is concerned, DH has always found me to be a rather cheap date.

I would love it! Preferably not to many sweet wines, please!
Dh and I have had fun reading the Wine Column from the Wall Street Journal, done by a married couple, John Brecher and Dorothy Gaiter. They have several books including The Wall Street Journal Guide to Wine and Wine for Every Day and Every Occasion: Red, White, and Bubbly to Celebrate the Joy of Living which removes the intimidation factor. While they know great and expensive wines, they hold to the ideas that good wine can be inexpensive, and it's more important that YOU enjoy it. And your personal experience enhances the flavor -- for example, a bottle of wine opened for a romantic dinner celebrating your anniversary is going to taste really good if everything else was enjoyable.

Caffeine: Two cups ground 15 seconds before brewing super strong with frothed half and half and sugar in the raw. Sometimes with added hot chocolate mix or Baileys, Kaluha type stuff on holidays. If none of that works it's off to the Cuban Market for the tiniest cup of joe you've ever seen in your life but it will knock your socks off!
Alcohol: Red wine nightly per doctor's instructions (he was so funny "Now don't go all girly on me, when I say a glass of red wine, I mean a glass of red wine. In fact, just pour two. )
Cocktails with husband or friends frequently. I prefer the less sweet drinks, very limey gin and tonics to avoid scurvy, ditto with margaritas, martinis should be shaken until ice floats on the top and have jalapeno olives only, never, ever, olives stuffed with bleu cheese. Take my word on that one! (Doesn't that look like an olive?)
Cosmos and lemondrops are good when out with the girls.
SeaBreezes are refreshing when out in the, ummm...seabreeze!
And rum? Why is the rum always gone? Mojitos and Cuba Libres are why! (Again with limes for scruvy avoidance. Think of all those poor deceased sailors with no teeth and raise your glass...)

Caffeine: Coffee has achieved a sort of demigod status for me. After much debate about whether it was an acceptable level of self-indulgence, I got a coffee grinder for Christmas. Two cups in the morning, pregnant or nursing or otherwise (well haven't been otherwise since I started drinking coffee), and if it's not Kona, it's cr*p. Also LOVE Coffee Heath Bar Crunch ice cream.
Alcohol Yes.
I mostly drink it when my brothers visit. There is a funny story about me and my friend at 34 and 36 weeks pregnant trying to order margaritas at a Mexican restaurant....

Jennifer,
I wish you could see how big I am smiling right now.
(I haven't had a chance to read the rest of your great posts, ladies, this AM yet...my husband is SICK --- hopefully not getting pneumonia.)

Although, at Japanese restaurants, plum wine is a really interesting discovery!

I can't remember who mentioned how many of us have family related alcohol issues. A quick google search pulled up this which says 1 in 12 adults abuse alcohol or are alcoholic. For me, it was my maternal grandfather. So counting back to my grandparents (4), parents and their siblings (4), and me and my adult siblings (5) it's a sure thing. I wonder if it's similar for everyone.

Nina, you can come over for coffee and a margarita any time! (Or if you are close to St. Michael's Abbey, you could get my brother to make you the margarita. He made them for Cecilia's Baptism party after he did the baptism . YUM! )

Oh I'm so glad you coffee drinkers spoke up. I was beginning to think that maybe I had a problem!
I love coffee! Starbucks Breakfast Blend in the morning freshly ground is my brew of choice. I probably consume 2 cups although I can't be certain; it seems I'm always getting a warmer up.
My great temptation is the Starbuck's drive thru which is on the way home from Mass. It seems to be always calling my name. My drink: Grande, Carmel Machiato, Non-fat, Light Whip. Those Cinnamon Dulces are really good too. Sweet though.
On Sunday night's, I get the best of both worlds, my dh and I sit down together and sip a decaf with Irish Cream. Bushman's is our favorite.
In the summer I enjoy an occasional Margarita. The strange thing is that whenever I'm pregnant a CRAVE margaritas. Since I can't drink them and the craving is so strong, I've searched for substitutes. I once found a margarita flavored Jell-O but it just wasn't the same! |

You're killing me! Ha---we sound alike, girlfriend! They have waaaaay too many good drinks at Starbucks.
I've got that husband thing with the Irish pride and liking the Bailey's, too...funny thing is, though: my husband just doesnt' really drink very much (even with those Irish genes).
Your margarita comments made me laugh! But for me....it's the opposite. I know I'm pregnant when alcohol makes me feel ILL...especially Margaritas...just the thought of that sweetness----oh yeah, just too much. I'm weird when I'm pregnant. I have major problems with wanting to eat at all. I actually GAIN weight after birth while I'm nursing!!! GREAT!

Yes, Rachel, I think you're right.
Actually, I'm trying to keep this very light and focus on the use of God's gifts in a proper way, but with profound gratitude---what a gift they are. They play a place in my life and it's just the facts.
But my paternal grandfather was supposedly an alcoholic. (He never ever seemed to be drinking, or ever was surly---just the sweetest man and very fit, always golfing.) My dad and mom weren't drinkers... occassionally, and just one. Sometimes I wonder if it truly is a gene thing: a predisposition you inherit.
And what do people mean by their family history? This is an interesting question, and I wonder, really. Elizabeth, Maria, some of you others mentioned the family history being a major deterrent. May I be so bold as to ask any of you how this played out, how this affected the family? I have many friends who say one of their parents was an alcoholic and they are still dealing with the issues because of it. Is it a change in mood---an anger, loss of temper? Is it acting in an embarassing manner? I ask only because I honestly do not remember my grandfather as being anything but wonderful and highly functional.
My brother is an addict, actually. So I don't take addiction lightly at ALL, people. We won't go down that path right now, but I certainly think I am an "addictive" personality, and I HAVE to "watch it".
All three of us siblings have issues my parents are immune to....it doesn't seem to make sense. ???? Maybe one thing to consider is they both had parents stay together to death, both sets of my grandparents....and they didn't for US? Who knows if divorce plays a role....
I'll shut up now!
Back to the fun discussion!
