(Unfortunately, both diuretics.... )

Hi Everyone,

Just a fun question...not a discussing the merits of or not question!

I'm just assuming many adults (not all, of course) consume some miniscule amounts of caffeinated and alcoholic beverages at least sometimes, if not regularly.     So, here goes----looking forward to your replies if you have the time......

1. Caffeine- (I never drank real coffee until after Clare was born, #6, but now I love it.) My choice: I'll take coffee.

2. Alcohol-(I don't like beer or hard alcohols, but I will enjoy the occassional Margarita...with salt.) My choice: I'll take red wine.

Caffeine: Can't do coffee at all. Makes me grouchy and irritable. I think it's just too much caffeine even in a single cup? I like Irish Breakfast tea once in the morning and again around three o'clock.

Alcohol: None. Ever. I have no tolerance and a whole lot of family baggage.

1. Caffeine: don't like coffee or sodas, but will drink tea, and of course chocolate

2. Alcohol - don't really like it much... will drink white/blush wine to be polite, enjoy a chambord sour! (raspberry/sour flavor, yum!) Probably would like the occasional sweet flavored something or other (like Bailey's Irish cream plus something) but since we really don't keep alcohol like that in the house much I don't get a chance. Dh drinks wine with dinner almost every night. Me, I'm a water girl.

Caffeine: Don't drink coffee - never have. Tea occasionally but prefer herbal. If I do caffeine it's in soda which isn't very frequent at all.

Alcohol: White wines. Also like the ocassioanl Margueritas like Nina mentioned. And when the guys are drinking beers at gatherings, I prefer the flavored alcohol beverages like coolers.

A funny story because it gives people an impression that is so not really me. When one of my older sons was about 6 he really liked to steal sips of the coolers if he could get away with it. We also had just returned from a trip through Nevada where I had played a few nickel slots and won a $20 jackpot! Big thrill for everybody.   Anyway, Jake asked me one day after that how old you have to be to drink alcohol and to play the slot machines. I told him that you had to be 21.   He then said, "I can't wait until I'm 21 so I can drink wine coolers and gamble, like my mom!"    I told him never to repeat that sentence outside the family -

1. Caffeine: I don't like coffee and most of the tea I drink is decaff. Ocassionally I would drink a coke. And as Amy said, there is always chocolate

2. Alcohol: I am not a good drinker but I like the taste of beer. Usually I end up with a non alcoholic kind. I like some wines :Pinot Griggio comes to mind. My dh has been into wines lately. He is experimenting with new brand and flavors. i occasionally take a sip of his.

Oh giving up caffiene is easy.. just develop a reaction to it that gives you migraine headaches.. you stop real easily so... the only time I have any significant amount of caffiene is a 12 oz cola when I already have a migraine that isn't caused by caffiene.. it gets rid of the migraine.

Alcohol.. well being pregnant more than not I'm not a huge drinker.. but when I can I do enjoy the occational glass of wine or mixed drink.. can't stand beer or the flavored drinks that are "malt beverage" (which beer is also) but for a light drink like people drink beer.. a hard cider is real nice.

I LOVE coffee, especially really strong coffee, but I have been pg or nursing (or both) since Feb '04, so I haven't had coffee since a wonderful cappuchino in Little Italy on Valentine's Day '04. My only source of caffeine these days is Ghiradelli 60% cocoa chocolate chips.

As for alcohol. I would love to have a glass of red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon to be exact), but because of control issues and family history I do not drink at all. I have not had a drink in a little over 10 years.

Caffeine: Love coffee!!! I'm also quite fond of Diet Pepsi. I have however been reading a few books about polycystic ovarian syndrome, which I have, and it looks like I'll be giving these up real soon.

Alcohol: I like wine. Particularly Riesling and Cabernet.
A glass of wine lowers my blood sugar so it's
medicinal.

Caffeine-I can't handle the calories of regular and hate diet so I only have a soda once a week with pizza! I have lately started drinking flavored coffee but only with flavored creamer and whipping cream added! My dh says that it is not still coffee and that the calories are now just as bad as a soda's.

Alcohol- Dh has been pushing for us to consume more wine what with the medical benefits so I'm working on it! I like champagne and sweet drinks. We are both such lightweights (alcohol wise [ ) that we can only drink a glass. It makes us sleepy! I cannot stand beer but a bit of Bailey's in my coffee is a delight.

Caffeine - a one or two cups of strong British tea with milk and honey in the morning. No caffeine after noon.

Alcohol - never had a drink until I was married and then sometimes had a glass of red wine with meals. I am fairly small and have no tolerance - I would fall asleep if I had more than a few sips. Not really had any since having children...BUT the odd thing is that one of my few cravings this pregnancy is red wine - I do take an occasional sip of my husbands

Caffeine - I love my coffee in the morning! We grind and brew fresh beans so it is strong, but delicious. Like Marilyn, I try not to drink caffeine after noon - if I have tea it is decaf. or herbal.

Alcohol - I don't care for beer or mixed drinks but I do like wine, preferably red.

Caffeine: I drink tea, hot or iced, pretty much all day. I don't drink regular coffee, but I love the International Coffees French Vanilla. That is my afternoon treat! I do drink soda, more than I should. I love Vanilla Coke and was so upset when they stopped making it. So now I settle for regular Coca Cola.

Alcohol: A lot of family history here, too. I am also a total lightweight, probably because of a constant state of dehydration. I like to drink a glass of white wine when we are with friends, but by the time I finish one glass, I have a headache. What fun! I also like Strawbery Daiquiries and Margaritas, and Jack Daniel's coolers! But again, I can't even make it through one without feeling the start of a hangover. I love the taste, can't they just make it without the alcohol!

coffee-- I used to love a good starbucks to give me a kick in the AM-- but anytime after noon and I'm up all night. However, now that I'm preg I have to give it up-- I realized last time around that any caffeine, even a couple sips of soda, gives me heart palpatiations.

alcohol-- oh, I miss this. i've had a few "mocktails" lately that were really nice    I'm a girly-drink girl, but would love a good long island iced tea (granted, I'd be swinging from the chandeliers if I'm not careful . . . )

Wow, I hesitate to write down my vices.

Caffeine -- can't handle much. I drink mostly decaf coffee in the morning, and any other caffeine is found through Diet Coke, which I like for the taste. Cannot stomach any kind of black tea unless it's completely herbal.

Alcohol -- only in moderation, as I don't have a high tolerance. Dh and I enjoy trying wines. It was something we did while dating and waiting to be blessed by God with a child. We're not connoisseurs or snobs, but do enjoy reading reviews and test when the wines are in the inexpensive range (Trader Joes is perfect for that). We enjoy relaxing in the evenings with a glass once in a while. It's not an everyday occurence.

I like both white and red, although red can give me headaches, and when it's hot outside I love chilled white wine. I can enjoy a beer, but they give me more headaches. I prefer wine or mixed drinks (Irish whiskey or Maker's Mark with Diet Coke is enjoyable).

I don't like sweet drinks but really enjoy a Margarita. But like Molly just posted, I need to pair all my alcohol with drinking water right away, as it seems to have immediate dehydration effects. So I will be seen being a two-fisted drinker -- one water, one alcohol.

I sound like such a lush!

I'm right there with you, Jenn. we enjoy very dry wines and my Dh taught me to like micro brewery and dark beer. (We are beer snobs. Is that an oxymoron?) Just a few times a month. And just a glass.

We were really into good liquors for a while but gave them up after Kev's heart trouble. He kicked his diet coke habit after that too!

Coffee. I am down to two cups in the morning. Thats good for me. I drink herb teas the rest of the day.

No, you don't Jenn. Not at all.   And thank you!

I guess we are total hedonists out West because the people I know pretty much all enjoy wine or beer semi-regularly or regularly without apology (I'm not talking pregnancy)...I think "good people" are afraid to admit it? But there is no shame.....studies show a little wine every day actually improves your health over all, if you can tolerate it. And my brother showed me an interesting study that coffee actually has more antioxidants than tea----it just isnt' reported. In all things, moderation. (But if you can't....total abstinence is the safest.)

Like you, I totally appreciate a good wine.

And like you and Molly, unfortunately, it doesn't really like me. I have to drink 2x as much water to make up for it right away.

Just an FYI-----I did a search on it...coffee is cited as one of THE highest sources of antioxidants there is.

Now, it also is a major stimulant and can make us frazzled moms even more high-strung. So, it's not for everyone. Esp. the stronger brews nowadays...you feel the effect immediately---SO much more than the Folgers days of long ago I imagine, before the Starbucks age. (We have a Starbucks literally on every other block for a 30 minute radius around us. I am not exaggerating.    )

I just had to add that info as, of course, I started this thread out by admitting I love coffee. Hee hee hee.
