Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Would you mind sharing if you nursed during or through a pregnancy, what # pregnancy, and how old you were?

Thank you!!!!
-------------------

I'll start. I have tended to be so sensitive to prolactin that I don't begin cycling again while I am nursing at all. I have actually stopped, and the two I mention next "took it up" again in spite of me---I don't know where I was!

Nursed Mary while pregnant with Maggie (preg. #5; I was 29, I think.   Still nursing Andrew, miscarried #10 a few months ago; age 38.)

Nina, I have nursed through all of my pregnancies except my first. My fertility seems to have NO response to prolactin whatsoever! My age has been 20-31.

Pg. w/#2, nursed #1 all the way through.
Pg. w/#3, nursed 2 and 1 all the way through.
Pg. w/#4, nursed 2 and 3 all the way throug
Pg. w/#5, nursed 3 until about 7 months and 4 all the way through.
Pg. w/#6, nursed 4 until about 5 months, and 5 all the way through.
Pg. w/7, nursed 5 until 1month post partem, and 6 all the way through.
Pg. w/#8, nursed 6 until about 3 months pp, and #7 still nurses once or twice a day.
Now, pg. w/#9, nursing #8 around the clock (she's only 8ms old) and #7 here and there.

I don't know if nursing has anything to do with my miscarriages at all, although I tend not to 'blame' it on them.   It just God's will.

entire pregnancy of #2 - 27/28
tandem nursed about 4 months into #3 - 29
nursed into all the rest by at least a couple months 30-36

what I understand from a midwife friend who has studied this a bit.. the oxytocin receptors on the uterus are not active until later in the pregnancy so nursing doesn't contribute to miscarriages.. at least not by causing contractions.. (lack of nutrition could play a part though I would think)

I nursed through my entire second pregnancy (age 31/32) and through 3/4 of third pregnancy (age 35.) My youngest was weaned when I was pregnant at age 41 with John Paul.

Here's an article from kellymom.com about concerns related to   possible links between nursing and miscarriage.

Love,

I was nursing when I miscarried at 28 and then
I nursed through at 28 when pg with number 3
at 30 when pg with #4
at 32 when pg with #5
at 34 when pg with #6
at 36 when pg with #7
I was nursing 1 and had just weaned the older when I miscarried at 38

That means I tandemed after each of those too.

Ladies! It is SO great for me to see so many of you that have nursed through pregnancy and beyond!! Oh, it just does my lonely heart much good!

Jodie, I've heard the same thing about miscarriages. I certainly no nutrition plays a role, but I' uber vigilant about how I eat during pregnancies and between. (Brewer diet)

Wow.....you all. Impressive. You disprove the 'ol not-ovulate-while-nursing studies---I assumed they were right on after reading Kippley's book as that is exactly what has happened to me...but I have never scheduled feedings and have allowed all kinds of nipping (I must say: I'm starting to get a little tired of it and am wondering why after all of these nurslings). I'm assuming you all aren't scheduling either/on-demand?

Now if I may ask, how are you keeping your energy up? Are you just nursing once or twice a day, a peck here, a peck there...are you nursing at night while pregnant? How have you handled the soreness?

Many, many thanks, moms!

Lisa,

Are we talking about Gail Brewer? The quart of milk/2 eggs/35 pounds gain minimum one?

It's the blueribbonbaby.org diet, Tom and Gail Brewer. My midwife calls it the SPUN diet Supporting and Protecting the Unborn through Nutrition. I've been following it for 12 years now, but I gain well over 35lbs. while pregnant, but I'm pretty petite and have been underweight a few times.

My kiddos nurse more than once a day and a couple of times at night until they are about 15 months or so, then they gradually start to slow down. I don't schedule feedings either, just whenever they want a nip.

I think there are many more women that experience a early return of fertility than many of us think.

Lisa,
Do you follow the same diet when nursing and not pregnant? 4 cups of milk a day?? I'm guessing you don't have babies for whom milk is a problem.

Elizabeth, Yes, I follow it all the time because my pregnancies come so close, I don't want to even begin to 'deplete' any stores I may have. No, we have not had any children with food allergies as of yet. I wish I could find an inexpensive alternative to cows milk, but nothing has cut it so far. Usually 2 of my cups of milk are in the form of a smoothie, or a protien shake when pregnant.

I have been pregnant/nursing for 11 yrs, 7 months straight now. So, here is my breakdown:
Nursed #2 while preg w/ #3 at age 28, weaned about halfway through.
Nursed #3 while preg w/ #4 at age 30, then tandem nursed for a few months.
Nursed #4 while preg w/ #5 at age 32, weaned about halfway through again.
Nursed #5 while preg w/ #6 at age 33, my milk dried up completely by end of first trimester.
Nursed #6 while preg w/ #7 at age 36, again my milk dried up pretty early on, but #6 was thankfully a little older.

I have not given pacifiers or bottles, started food before 8 months and I nurse on-demand through the night, and always get my cycles back before a year (8 months this time around!). With the exception of this last baby, I was pregnant by the time my nursling was 15 months. So much for the studies!

As for energy, I don't keep it up anymore. I think that is probably why my milk dried up the last two pregnancies. My body just couldn't sustain both functions.

I nursed through pregnancy and beyond with children #3, 4 and 5. With #3 and #4, I tandem nursed for a year.    Before that I thought you "had" to wean when you got pregnant, so I weaned #1 and #2 at ages 16 months and 12 months, respectively. It felt way too early for both of them.

I didn't nurse #6 after the first month because of his liver disease. And #5 weaned right after my 6th was born because I had to be at the hospital all the time.

Just weaned #7 recently.

Baby #1 was a tubal pregnancy who died when I was aged 24.
Nursed baby #2 while pregnant with baby #3.
Miscarried baby #3 at age 28.
Continued to nurse baby #2 while pregnant with baby #4 until 7 months into the pregnancy, age 29.
Nursed baby #4 while pregnant with baby #5 until eight months into pregnancy.
Nursed baby #5 while pregnant with baby #6 until end of first trimester. She still asks to nurse now and then but has forgotten how.
Nursing baby #6 who is now almost 14 months. Still no cycle.

I nursed #1 the entire pg w/#2 & then tandem nursed 4mos
I was 28
(you should have seen the nurses face the first night in the hospital after delivering #2. She walked in & saw me nursing #1 while #2 slept beside us in the bed.    "You're going to have to get up & wash off or something...!!!!" Me: "yea, ok "
My 2nd delivery was the only one I have not had to have methergen?? after b/c my uterus actually did start to clamp down.

nursed #2 while pg w/#3 but weaned 2 months before delivery
I was 29
nursed #3 while pg w/#4 weaned right before delivery
I was 32
nursed #4 while pg w/#5 but he weaned himself before delivery of #5
I was 34
still nursing #5 (15 months old)

I had 7 months of amenorrhea with Mary Beth (wasn't 'ecologically breastfeeding then)
I nursed Mary Beth all the way through my 2nd pregnancy (Anna)...age 24-25
I had 11 months of amenorrhea with Anna (was ecologically breastfeeding, but Anna sucked her thumb a lot)
I nursed Anna 5 months into my 3rd pregnancy (Lucia)...age 26 (27 when I delivered)

I nursed Lucia 4 or 5 months into my 4th pregnancy (Clara)...age 29
I had 18 months of amenorrhea with Lucia (ecologically breastfeeding a baby who REALLY LIKED to nurse)

Age 30 - preg w/#2, nursed #1 all way thru & beyond (tandem).
Age 31 - preg w/ #3, nursed #2 until 5 mo. preg.

Nina: You asked how handled the tiredness, etc. well with preg #3, I didn't. I couldn't. I weaned #2 at 10 months when I was 5 months preg. I couldn't function, so that's one of the things that we decided.

While preg., I sometimes put lansinoh on if I knew she wanted to nurse. It created a barrier and didn't seem to be as sensitive.

So much for the studies here too. I "intensively breastfeed" (and do ALMOST everything that's described for ecological BF) and have gotten my cycles back at 5 months, 4 months, 3 months, and 5 months post partum.
