Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Lissa, can we join? It sounds like fun. And we love Geography.

We'd like to join in, too.

About how much time is required each week?

In the first several weeks maybe 15 minutes to do a couple calculations. When you start getting clues you might spend some more time searching resources, but that time is variable. If you obsess about it you could spend tons of time doing all the calculations for all the locations.    Doing it as a group really is not time consuming at all.

Dennis was interested in taking this on with us. Let me check with him and get back to you, but I think we are a "yes".

LOL!!! Oh, this brings back such fun memories. I am so excited to get started again this year.

Hurrah for all of you who've decided to join in. (And there's still time, if anyone else is interested...you can join in any time, really! Don't be shy...)

I have registered our group with Journey North as 4Real Homeschoolers. The first batch of data will be released this Friday, so stay tuned for more instructions! It looks like we're going to have enough families to pair up in teams of two (and maybe some teams of three, if more people join). All that means is that the two of you will be assigned the same mystery location to post data for here at 4Real. You can take turns sharing your data with the rest of our group. Do you want to choose a partner, or shall I assign them randomly? (Maybe pairing people who did it last year with first-timers?)

I'll post instructions on a new thread. Go ahead and print out your graph, but don't be overwhelmed by all the info at that link. What you'll be doing is really very simple. It boils down to two weekly tasks:

1) Every Monday, use sunrise and sunset times to calculate how many minutes of light there are in your town that day.

2) On Fridays, Journey North will release sunrise/sunset times for the ten mystery locations. You'll use this data to calculate the photoperiod (amount of daylight) for your assigned location. Share that data with the rest of the group, and we'll all mark it on our graphs.

On your graph, you'll be charting eleven photoperiods each week--your hometown and the ten mystery classes. Later we'll use this data and other clues to narrow down where the Mystery Classes are. Fun fun!

You do not need to submit anything to Journey North (I'll handle that for our group), but feel free to sign up for the email updates if you would like them. The same info will be posted here each week.

We would like to try this too, if it is not too late. We are new to this, but it sounds really interesting.

Please count me in- we really had fun with this last year (and believe me, you'll all get it -- it's little manageable steps )

Thanks Lissa for coord. again!

Anyone else? The project starts Friday so I'd like to get our teams formed up later today. Of course, anyone may still join in the weeks to come and just be added to an existing team.

OK, I just did a count and came up with: 7 families who have done this before (either with the group or solo) and 14 first-timers. That will give us 9 teams of 2, and 1 team of 3.

Additional participants will be added to an existing team. (So don't be shy! If you're reading this and would like to participate, speak up!)

Those of us who have done the project before can pair up with first-timers this year. We have more first-timers than second-timers, but no worries there--we were all first-timers last year and we figured it out all right.

I was thinking that this could also be a fun way to get to know another 4Real mom a little better, so I'm going to do random pairings of veterans and first-timers, unless you all chime in now and tell me otherwise!

(If you'd rather choose partners, that's fine with me too—let me know what you'd like. Erica and I were talking about having our oldest girls do the project together, but even if we're on separate "teams," the girls can get together and do their calculations and charting. Just means more math for them, which isn't a bad thing... )

The only point of the teams is to divvy up the 10 Mystery Classes among our group so that we're each only responsible for one set of calculations every week. We'll all be graphing all ten Mystery Classes and chatting here about where in the world they might be.

Thank you for organizing this. I was just telling my husband how nice it is to be doing something in a group for a change!

I think that this is a great idea - as much as possible anyway since it won't break out exactly even.

I also will reiterate that each step of the process is explained very well on the Journey North website. Everything that you are asked to do is incremental and they give you all the formulas that you will need - you just plug in the numbers from your locations. They literally walk you through it. When questions came up last year or anything wasn't clear to somebody there were lots of other people to ask.
