I'd also love to see high school lists.

Erin, I know you live in Australia and because of that it might be a different story for you, but out of print books are easier than ever to buy reasonably here in America. The market is oversaturated with sellers.

I was kept awake last night thinking of three absolutely not-to-be-missed books. Here they are:
All the Places to Love
Leah's Pony
and
Least of All
All are rich in history and character. All are extremely well-written. And all have illustrations that you want to touch, they're so beautiful. I'll keep my eye out for more ...

It might be fun to ask the teen forum what their favorites are/where from the list.

Thanks Noreen. My announcement is here. I didn't know where to put it (I suppose in Fireside Chat?) on this forum.
God bless, Tina

I am working my way though the booklist for the first time and loving it, but here's a book the girls and I just found "All the Places to Love" by Patricia MacLachlan with breathtakingly tender illustrations by Mike Wimmer.

As an addition, I suggest the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander. We just love them.

I've got several more goodies from the same author. This are for littlies: Dogger and Alfie. I have a review on my blog singing the praises of these books. Might they fit somewhere in the 4Reallearning lineup?

I second these. I read them in 6th grade, and my kids have really enjoyed them, too. Started Paul on his quest to renew his Welsh identity.

I have a question (OK, several questions) for those of you with older children. I read (I think in Landscape with Dragons to steer clear of authors such as Lloyd Alexander and Ursula Le Guin. Is this a case of just steer clear of *some* of their books? Because I know there are authors of great books who write mediocre books which we steer away from as well. If that's the case, which of their books should we give wide berth and which should we embrace?

Elizabeth, I am wondering if you might be including more about homeschooling thru the teen years (and the college application process) in the new addition. I recently came across a lecture of yours about this topic and derived unspeakable comfort from it. Two of my close friends also loved it and could relate to every struggle you described. Books about homeschooling preschoolers and elementary grade kids abound. I need more about those wonderful older years. Just an idea.

Helene,
I am guessing that you came across a talk I gave. That talk will be turned into a chapter on the teen years. .

Ladies,
It's crunch time. I need to write two new chapters and revise the booklist this month. Prayers are appreciated. I really really need a chunk of clear-headed time.
With regard to the booklist: how would you like to see the books organized? Right now, the "levels" are confusing. It is helpful, I think to have things grouped by subject, but not all those books fit easily into a group. The living science could all be together. I have wayyyy more living faith books that could be added, particularly picture books. And I'd like a section of apologetic books for confirmation age kids.
Bethlehem has some new titles since the first printing too...

Elizabeth,
Since I am moving into high school area, I do believe that organizing the books by subject would work best for me. I like what you have come up with in your subject areas and think confirmation would be great. I would also like to see some recommendations for math since that is what we are struggling with at this point--not necessarily good v. bad, but more along the lines of how much theory is covered, etc. I am not sure that is in the scope of your book, but it would be greatly appreciated.
I will pray for you and your writing effort over the next few months. When is your publication date?

A little clarification: I am definitely going to write about going into the teenage years. I am not going to write "The High School Book." I don't have time to do a thorough job of high school before we need to have Real Learning re-printed (we're running out of copies and the supply we have wont' last until fall so the reprint needs to happen this spring)and the publisher thinks that high school needs a book of its own. Some of the books in the Real Learning list belong in high school and I do have thoughts about high school apologetics. That said, I have pretty extensive reading lists for high school and they are actually organized because we just did all that work for Michael's portfolio.

I'm so excited! Since Grace's high school years are almost here, this revision is just in time. I second Carole's suggestion about organizing the books by subject – and then maybe by level within the subject, like your nature study booklist. For example, for American history, you could list picture books (D’Aulaire, etc.), then easy readers, intermediate, and high school… Oh, and the spine and/or reference books. Clear as mud?
Thank you, Elizabeth. Your writing has been such a gift to me. We'll be praying that you find the time you need to finish this.

Sage advice from your publisher. I will look forward to a revised copy of Real Learning, and in the future, "The High School Book."
Prayers for all of your efforts. Off to a soccer game.

We are currently readingThe First Crossing of Greenland by the Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen. (He walked/ski'd/sledded across the center of Greenland.) I wanted to finish the book before recommending it. But so far, so good, in light of your deadline, I mention it.
He also has Farthest North, his attempted trip to the Northpole. I haven't read this one at all.
We began reading these books after reading aloud a biography by Francine Jacobs A Passion for Danger This book was very exciting but I'm sorry that I didn't read the original first. But, if it weren't for Francine Jacob's book (picked up at a library book fair) I wouldn't have found out about the original.
