Some pictures are in color. Some are sepia...some are black and white. Most of my more recent ones are all in color, with smatterings of the rest. I think just getting readership has enabled them to get better printing equipment, etc...expanded their repetoire, so to speak.
The images online are very lush, aren't they? And the newer magazines are, too.
Definitely don't base an opinion on one of the older issues. While the content is still wonderful, it's gotten better, and so has the imagery used.

Oh yes, and Elspeth (the dd) is a sweetheart. I've talked to her on the phone a couple of times, lol. I bought one of her musical CDs (very talented family...really..it's almost sickening...at least I know where some of my family's "talents" in the arts went! LOL)--Inspired Holidays, I think was the name of it. It is actually not bad for general listening, either. I'd like to get some more, but I had my cds stolen from my car--all of my rosary cds, all of my cds from "The Singing Nuns" (fortunately, they didn't get my cd of Pipes and Drums--bagpipes, that is)...so now I need to replenish the stock for the car....sigh. Got to do that first before I buy more "in the house" type music....

Oh Alice, is my face red. I read this initially and thought you already had your kitchen done. So mazeltov on a new kitchen! That is too exciting. Believe it or not, I really wasn't copying your idea of a blue and white theme. It's been on my mind for years and years!

Alice, I'm so happy you're finally getting your Victoria inspired kitchen. I can't wait to see pics - do some before and after. I'm not sure what mag inspired my bathroom....I think several of them.
....and no, men do not get Victoria.

Rachel, thanks for the update on the newer editions of Al Young's.
The images from Victoria are still so clear in my mind, so clear in fact that yesterday I wore a flowy white skirt in remembrance of that photo of the lady in white on the ladder picking peaches, remember that one? Of course, I had a hot pink top on and no peach tree in sight, I guess I could have climbed up and gotten a coconut but that is not quite the image I was going for...

Yes, that is the issue I was talking about! I do not remember if there was even a kitchen specifically featured (although there probably was). I just remember thinking it would be a great theme for a kitchen!
Oh, and my new kitchen is not all that imminent. Summer of 2007 at the soonest! Jenn, BTW, I know you weren't copying! It is such a timeless design, I am not surprised many of us would be drawn to it!

Hello ladies, for those who have Victoria magazines. You should make a corner in your home to keep a stack. Rotate them through the season. I have a beautiful old chair to rickety to sit on. I always keep a stack of seasonal magazine. Then when I take my afternoon bath I can grab one.
I also wanted to say that Storybook mag is amazing. They are the most creative people. I was sure they HSed and talked with the wife. She laughed and say everyone thinks that. But they do not. Although they have a lot of friends that do.
have a yummy weekend Clarice

Sep-Oct 2002--Daddy Longlegs
May-Jun 2003--The Last Chronicle of Barset

Under new format of numbering, here's the remainder of what I have:

July-Aug 2006/vol6#4--Understood Betsy
Sep-Oct 2006/vol6#5--Susan Coolidge's Clover and High River Valley
Nov-Dec 2006/vol6#6--The Count of Monte Cristo
Jan-Feb 2007 (I think)/vol7#1--An Alcott Christmas--according to the editorial calendar, this is supposed to be Nov/Dec 2006, so I am off somewhere in there, lol.
Sorry about that.
But if anyone wants to ask questions about any of those issues, I have them on hand and can look over them for you.

LOL! I understood that!
I guess what I am mostly interested in is: how many recipes are there? are they doable (not overly involved or requiring hard to find ingredients)? Do the gardening articles just wax eloquent on the benefits of gardeing or do they give practical advice? Are the "workshops" and "decorating" portions of these magazines specific enough that one could actually re-create their ideas?

Okay, I'll take a look...hold on while I get the magazines...lol (kids are down for naps so I can do this...lol)
Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, for starters...recipes are easy, and fairly numerous for a magazine of this size--two cookies, one squash tart, one garden cordial, and some nummmmy sounding cherry and cream biscuits. Perfect for a tea, it seems to me. And sound yummy (thanks for telling me to take this one out...lol). The gardening section is very simple and easy, about drying flowers. One of the things they also discuss is making flower dolls out of hollyhocks--they do give how-tos, and also give you pictures from a couple of angles of completed ones, so you can see if you have done it "right",lol
I like the decorating in this one, as they did their laundry room...the workshop is also about this same room--and it is LOVELY! Makes you actually want to go spend time there! LOL They give some helpful pointers as to making/using dryer-safe herbal sachets in the dryer itself...to make the clothes smell nifty (I am personally not a lavendar fan, probably have to go with rose petals or some such. DHs army uniforms also probably shouldn't smell like roses, either, lol).
Overall, a great issue. Well worth getting (esp if you have a nice garden that has loads of flowers--or if DH buys you flowers...those are nice, too, lol).
The Boxcar Children issue:
I will start from the beginning, and not just cover the areas you were particularly interested in, since I like this one a good deal.
The first interior page after the table of contents is a one-page editorial by Mrs Young, about her decorating "style"...I am SOO like her in that respect, it was like sitting and listening to an older me (with a less artistically talented husband, though, lol).
The Storybook Hearth section is very cute, esp if you have littles. THey provide you with some illustrations that you can copy and use to help make a little homemade book. And they give you the how-tos. The decorating portion isn't as applicable to me (altho I do now keep my eggs in a stoneware bowl no longer suitable for use as a mixing bowl--it's old and has a crack in it)...I am slowly trying to implement more of these ideas...but it's hard to remember what I was going to do with something when I finally get around to doing said project, iykwim. The section in this one is vegetables...mostly. And it is a lot of making more "magic" in the garden than how-tos, however there are some, including a website for making a sunflower and corn playhouse. It deals with getting the dc involved, and how to, what to really expect--it also pulls a good deal from the Boxcar Children book itself.
The Kitchen section is good, altho the recipes are not so numerous. A Pandowdy (which sounds remarkably easy to make, since you make it the night ahead and serve it for breakfast if you want), a cookie recipe, as well as a stew. The workshop portion is good, esp if you have littles. It's all about making small furniture--there's a trestle table and bench, a dishrack/plate rack, wallmounted (for those with domestically minded little girls, who already have a kitchen set, this would be a very cute addition), and even a small shelf (wall mounted). They give patterns that can be "blown up" to make the furniture the right size. The last real page is the "bookshelf"...and they talk about other good books one can read with/to children of the age who would enjoy The Boxcar Children. Ballet Shoes is mentioned, btw.
Hopefully, this is what you were looking for. If you have any other questions (or if anyone else would like me to tell them some things about the other issues I have, just let me know. I keep them fairly close to the computer, ironically enough, so it isn't any trouble, really.
HTH!

Wow! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this! I've been steeling a moment here and a moment there today, but I will sit down tonight and read through this post in detail. My New Year's resolution is to focus on beauty, but the budget is tight. I just wanted to have a better idea before I spent the money.
Thanks so much!

I don't know Victoria magazine -- I don't think it was ever published in the UK. I'm just wondering if Country Living magazine would be something similar? It's not really 'me' -- I actually leave all that side of things to dh who is *much* more artistic than me (so everything's quite masculine LOL) -- but it's got a good mixture of articles which seem quite similar to what people have mentioned above.

Elizabeth, I actually subscribe to this magazine! It is one of my absolute favorites, and I agree, it is somewhat similar to Victoria - definitely has the same quality of photography and articles. My mum and I share it - I pass it on to her once I'm done. She has done paintings from pictures she's found in there.

Michelle, I would recommend looking online--say ebay? Maybe you can find them there? You may be able to find them at a less expensive rate than the $7/per issue price for the back issues.
Also, do you have a bday coming up? It might be something you could request for a bday present (or Valentine's Day? Maybe?).
I need to renew my subscription, lol.
