Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Drew,

Thank you so much for adding to this thread. Some of the points you make will really help our own myth studies.

We are not in them yet, but we will do some sort of Greek and roman myth study soon.

For the record, I loved D'Aulaire's Greek Myths as a girl and I am a very sensitive soul. (so sensitive that I was actually offended at being labelled sensitive ) I am not sure why I was able to seperate the myth from reality even at age 9. I really was facinated by the myths and I think that my understanding of my faith has been enhanced by having a good grasp of the mythology of that pre-Christian era.

Someone mentioned here about the thread of truth that is found in all world religions. C.S. Lewis mentions this concept in Mere Christianity I think and this idea really, really resonated with me. It helped me on my journey home to Catholocism. A historcal world view helps me understand and appreciate the universality of faith and transports me through time and space to encounter God in all of history. I believe the Bible contains salvation history, but not all of salvation history is in the Bible.

That said, I am definitely in favor of using different methods, books and mediums for studying mythology and if D'Aulaire's isn't cutting it, I will try something else. There are so many great suggestions in this thread!

Yes, CHC books - those are the type I was referring to -i.e. I prefer those much more in the early years over Greek myths. Sorry I was clear as mud .

We do have the same thing going on here as Bridget - boys & all things Greek & Middle Ages - swords, blood, monsters, you name it! I did talk with a young lady once who told me that she couldn't stand being classical-educated (Kolbe was what her mom used) while her brothers loved it.

Hmmmm...food for thought. My daughter thrives in the CHC environment. My son? He tolerates it, bucking all the way. "Why do we have to read stories about goody-goody people all the time? Why don't any of them ever make mistakes?"

I think some Greek and Roman myths are in order in this house!

I'm not sure if this is even the best place to post this, but I wanted to tell you about my ds's presentation on Greek Mythology. We have an annual "Festival of the Arts" in our homeschool group. It is kind of like a Science Fair, ARt Fair, Talent Show, all rolled into one. This year my ds (13yo) wanted to do a presentation on the Greek Myths which he has been reading. I hesitated knowing there would be very young children there, and I didn't know how all the other parents would feel. Anyway, he ended up doing it but we lightened it a bit for the younger kids. This is what we did... He told the story of Hercules and the 12 tasks. Before he started we placed "props" around the stage which were all mostly stuffed animals. When he would tell about one of the tasks, for example the Nemon Lion, my other son (5yo) went onto the stage, looking like Hercules (though fully dressed! ) and wrestled the stuffed lion, brining it to me when he was done. That way, as my older ds told the gruesome tale of how Hercules strangled it, then skinned it with it's own claws, the little ones were distracted by the show going on behind. Some of them were really cute. For the stag we tied fishing line to a stuffed unicorn (didn't have a dear) and I pulled it along as ds chased it, for the boar, we took a little stuffed pig and glued tusks to it. It was a big hit and both the big kids and the little ones were entertained.

I knew we had a book around here somewheres. We've used "Tales of Ancient Greece" by Enid Blyton successfully. The children have all enjoyed it at various age levels. I believe it's OOP thought.
