No...but my brother did his bachelors and masters degrees at UCSB. We used to vacation up there all the time. I'm from Pasadena (the Rose Bowl one!). Did you go to school in Santa Barbara or Goleta?
...remember what I said about driving PCH...total Native Californian, that's me!

You know, the name sounds familiar, but like I said my memory is shot. Not too long ago, I spent an afternoon trying to remember the last name of one of my best friends in high school. Pitiful! 
I will have to pick up my yearbooks from my mom's next time I am up there.
By the way, for all of you avoiding the Mixing Bowl, it is much, much better these days. Better, that is, if you don't mind high overpasses! Fortunately for me, I rarely have to take one as my parents live up by DC. Of course, they have changed things around so much that I almost ended up heading for the Wilson Bridge by accident.

Well, I'm not sure. I went to San Marcos High School. I would consider it Goleta, but maybe it's still SB. I got married at St. Raphael's, down the street.

Oh my goodness...this thread grew so fast I had to wait till everyone was asleep to even sit down and read it.
Alice, thank you so much for the invite. I love women's gatherings and the warm conversation they bring. I've got some home baked bread to share. My favorite tea is definitely PG Tips, but I can't do the caffeine this late at night (almost 11pm) so I'd be grateful if someone has some extra herbal tea to share?
I started lurking on the CCM loop when I was a protestant in hiding from my own circle because I had fallen in love with Adoration. That must have been around 1999. I never posted though, mostly because I was in hiding! We entered the church in 2002. A few years later I was getting ready to move from Southern CA across the country, and when I got here, Elizabeth invited me to check out the fancy new forum. 
BTW, anyone who has lived in CA needs to love driving, I think. It just goes with the whole CA dreamin' thing, don'tcha think? Dh and I met in Riverside and used to love to drive down the PCH and listen to music, ending up at Laguna Beach most of the time.
I lived in Springfield as a child for a few years...my dad was a sailor man and we moved a lot. Haven't been back since the 80's though.
Most of my childhood was in Connecticut and Minnesota. Those are the places I remember the most.
We've always homeschooled. I read Karen Andreola's book first and was immediately enchanted. A dear friend from my RCIA class and I bought 2 copies of Elizabeth's book at the same time to save on shipping when it was first released. Its quite dog earred now. I need to get a new one to loan out because I'm so attached to my own copy I'm not prepared to have it go MIA.
The thing I most appreciate about these forums is the amazing amount of wisdom. Its not easy where I live now to find women who have homeschooled through high school in particular. The liturgical year still feels new to me, even after 5 years. I know there will always be wonderful ideas for how to celebrate with loveliness here.
Next time, I'll bring some apple pecan tea bread. Its my favorite. Yum!

Boy do you have THAT right! As recently as early June, I had no idea, would NEVER have guessed, that we would be in California come October. You should see all the stuff I planted in the spring that I had to leave behind...
Scott had such a hard time deciding whether to accept this job offer. I told him whatever he wanted was fine with me, though we both knew it would be painful to leave our VA friends behind. When he finally decided to take the job, he said to me, "Thank you for being the kind of girl who's always up for an adventure." I swear, just hearing that made me feel so glad and thankful, you know?
Of course then we have been so richly blessed by Erica and her family and the amazing community here. It's awesome to consider...if it weren't for online friendships, I would never have landed in this part of San Diego county, where we had friends rolling out the red carpet for us even before we arrived.

If you're talking about the same Tony's I am thinking of in Manassas, we've been there, but our favorite (and closer to us) is the Tony's in Fair Lakes that is run by a guy named Giovanni whom I think the cousin or nephew or some relative (or maybe just a friend) of the owner of the Tony's in Manassas. There is a crucifix on the wall and Pope and Saint (Francis and Padre Pio) pictures. The owners are wonderful and they must treat their workers well because they have had some of the same friendly, happy-seeming staff for years.
There is also a Buon Appetito in Chantilly (same shopping center as the Catholic Shop) and a Ciro's in Centreville which I believe are run by friends or relatives and have the same basic food -- delicious, authentically New York pizza (I grew up in Brooklyn) and wonderful meatball heroes/subs. The sauces at some of those places seem to vary a little from each other but the basics are overall the same in my experience. The pizza IMO just cannot be beat in the DC area, and my lifelong Brooklynite mother said it was the best meatball hero she'd ever had.

Well, Diane, to be honest, if you were in Omaha, we still wouldn't see each other *that* often, but probably more often than with you in Belgium. I'm in Omaha several times a year, as I have dear friends and a spiritual director there. And Ramona, Betsy and Anne would all love to meet you all !
But, since you asked, there are lots of great things about Omaha's Catholic Homeschool group:
Archbishop Curtiss presides over a Mass for homeschoolers once a year. He's very supportive of homeschoolers. Promise you'll sit with me at the luncheon afterward!
There's a very active Catholic hs group, full of wonderful people and a variety of activities from which to choose.
My best friends (they're my kids' godparents, actually) run a Homeschool Learning Center there and it offers lots of great sessions, such as Writing Groups, Recorder, Art, PE, Drama, and high school level Biology, to name just a few.
Omaha is a family-friendly, homeschool friendly place to live, with a pretty reasonable cost of living.
I'll be praying for your discernment!

Theresa, it's the same. There's also another Tony's in Bull Run Shopping Center in Manassas run by family members. The sad thing is that many don't practice their faith, so we pray for them. And some are feuding family.
But their food is so good...and they have big tables to accomodate our crowd of family. Wanna make a Tony's meet-up date?

Wow. If you ever want to feel loved, just post a note about how you can't decide where to spend the rest of your life, be forced to stay away from the computer for a day, and watch what happens. You guys are the best!

One thing is for sure: if my dh did get sent to a remote assignment for a year (and that means he'd have to go alone  ), I wouldn't need to buy a house or worry about where to live. I'd just buy a camper and keep circling the US, visiting all of you.
Dh and I discussed it all again yesterday with his parents. And once again, we went round and round in circles with no resolution. But I walked away with a sense of peace. Nancy is right....in the end, God will decide where we're going to live...through the Air Force...so there's no sense getting too worked up about it. We have enjoyed every home we've had, even those we didn't expect to, and we've been blessed with beautiful friends in each place. And we can always move again if we want to---it's not like we don't know how!
It's such a comfort to know that wherever we end up, all of you will still be here.

Lissa defies category!
I would say she is more like Martha than Ma, with a dose of Martha's storytelling mother and the sensible Miss Crow thrown in for good measure, along with the easy comfort of Cook and and a generous hand full of Auld Mary's wisdom--all wrapped up in a loving and lively Catholic Faith.

Hi,
Another from New England and a Dunkin Donuts coffee lover... make it extra cream, sugar on the side please... so I can put in a "smidge" myself!!
I am enjoying reading these posts and was excited to read from those of you who know Magdalen College in NH. Two of our children graduated from Magdalen.
I am currently homeschooling 4 of our children. Our oldest dd is on her own and still living in NH and our ds is married and also living in NH.
I have been homeschooling for 12 years. We are CMers with a bit of unschooling thrown in. It works for us.
The children are 5ds, 7ds, 9dd, and 16dd (and driving!yeah!)
We are currently in Chicago visiting dear friends. Just dh and I, celebrating our 26th anniversary! (Had to sneak online to catch up this morning).
I mostly lurk, but would love to post more. I am not a talented writer like you all!

You aren't being nosy at all. I brought it up after all. Your questions are good ones. We have roots here, and we are in a good parish (and have pretty much free reign over RCIA). Yes, it's a pretty part of the country but Lancaster County isn't at all what it was 20 years ago and it's growing at an alarming rate. Traffic is a nightmare - OK not like LA or Seattle or D.C. but way more than what we are use to - and farmland is continually being lost to subdivisions. But hey that's progress right? And we are fortunate that considering how old this area is (Lancaster city itself being the oldest inland city in the United States) it's amazing that it's taken this long for such growth to occur. But it IS occurring and we (both dh and I) are longing for somewhere more remote...more country. The cost of living here has risen quite a lot and we would like to be able to buy a house with land...but doing that here wouldn't be likely. Maybe it's just wanderlust but what used to feel like home just doesn't feel so much like that anymore.
So we're considering our options. It probably wouldn't be for another year that we would move, but we're looking. Further north in PA seems to be the draw right now (yoo hoo Viv and Donna!).
Our house has already risen quite a bit in value just in the 5 years since we bought it so selling it and moving to a less expensive (and less busy) area could give us better options. Time will tell.

Michele, we have good friends near the St. John Vianney Seminary -- the dh teaches at the Sem and the mom and her kids (and tons of cats!) live on 5 acres near the sem and homeschool.....
But, you could always come out west to Colorado -- you already know a few of us...
