Thanks Katherine, it's lovely!
In the traditional calendar, the rules for the Feast of the Baptism are much simpler. It is January 13th unless the 13th falls on a Sunday in which case the feast is not celebrated (Holy Family on that Sunday instead). We still have Epiphany on the 6th and the feast of the Holy Family is the 1st Sunday after Epiphany. So our Feast of the Baptism, and thereby the end of our Christmas season, is not until next weekend. It's especially nice for us because my youngest child's baptism is the same day (Jan 13)!! Double celebration!!
Since we had Epiphany yesterday, today is our Feast of the Holy Family!! Happy feasting season everyone!!

Another question for Jenn - Does Epiphany have an octave? Which feasts do have an octave?
Thank you!

Does anyone know what to do with morning prayer? Just follow the weekdays after the Epiphany even after the Baptism of the Lord until the following Monday? What about the Sunday that falls between? |

Gwen, you would start First Week of Ordinary time for Tuesday. |
|
|
Do you go back to Week I even though we start Week I again on the Monday after the Baptism of the Lord? |
|

Sorry, Gwen! If you have any questions on what week to pray, see Universalis. They also have a new blog and this entry on Christmas season will answer your questions.

I wrote a post on my blog about the traditions in the early church and the celebration of the manifestations of God on January 6. In the early church, all of the childhood events in the life of Jesus were celebrated on January 6. So it is my view, that the Christmas season is the festal period in which it is appropriate to meditate on these events as well as the specific feasts prescribed in the modern church. Now, for specifics on exact dating according to the new calendar...Jenn is most definitely the expert. |

I'm not exactly the expert. I'm just very enthusiastic and like to do research on this area! MicheleQ knows tons more than I...she's in the business of calendars, you know.
I think I have to agree that the Flight Into Egypt isn't included in any particular, but perhaps similar to Katherine's description of Epiphany. Our Western Epiphany was taken from the East, so maybe in a similar manner. I'll have to read more to see confirmation on this.

The only octaves in the Reformed calendar are Christmas and Easter, no octaves for Epiphany.

Jenn, I wonder if it would be most appropriate in the western tradition to observe the Flight Into Egypt on the Feast of the Holy Innocents? Just a thought.

I got it figured out. Since I use Shorter Christian Prayer instead of the full book, I do not have the individual days marked. It just said go back to Week I the Monday after the Baptism of the Lord. In this case we go back to Week I the TUESDAY after the Baptism of the Lord and we'll be on Week II on the 2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time (1/14). THanks for the link though. I'll be using that.

When the Baptism and Epiphany are separated by a week, what are those days in between called?
