Nancy,
We'll be there barring a castastrophe. Is it at Kinder Farm Park? Katie's classes should be over by then so there should be no scheduling conflicts.
Thanks for arranging this.
In Christ,
Deborah

Yes, it's at Kinder Farm Park. It's kind of far for folks in VA, but their facilities are so diverse that a multi-age group usually does well there.
It's a rain-or-shine deal; the pavilion's pretty large, though. If it's going to rain buckets, we'll have to make some tough choices, but if it's just drizzling perhaps we can bring some craft projects to do?

<sigh> I don't think I can make it. The date worked for me originally but things have changed. My 17 yr. old ds is graduating from basic training that weekend in South Carolina and we're driving down a few days before. I MIGHT be able to convince dh to work it into the schedule as it's possible we will be starting our road trip that day . . .but you know how some dh's on a road trip can be, all focused on getting to the destination and making good time at that ("What? You have to go to the bathroom? Sorry but we still have a 1/4 tank of gas - you'll have to hold it!" ).
But I'll throw the idea out there anyway.

Okay, I'm embarrassed. I thought I was replying to the thread about seeing bluebells in NoVA. I need to change my response to "maybe" and talk this over with DH.

Oh Nancy, I don't think I can make it after all. We have doctor's appointments and may also have piano guild that day. That particular week has recently become an altogether crazy week, and we haven't yet entered April!
I hope everyone has a great time, and thanks, Nancy, for organizing the location and date!

Nancy:
What start time did you have in mind? I know we were going to try to catch the color guard and drill (starts at 11) and then go by the park for a couple of hours or so. I have no idea how long it takes to drive from the Naval Academy to the park the day before graduation and we are flexible. I also have no idea when rush hour starts there (to us it always looks like rush hour) so I know folks would want to avoid that and we would really try to work around other peoples schedules.
Thanks for setting this up.
Janet

Janet and everyone,
We have the pavilion all day. It will take about a half-hour to drive from the Academy to Kinder Farm Park (maybe a bit longer, but probably not) in the mid-day time frame.
Rush hour in the morning ends around 9:30 - 10:00. I was thinking about getting folks together beginning around 11:00 (please let me know if this is too early!) and then everyone can leave as time dictates for them. Certainly people in Northern Virginia (who will have a 1 1/2 hour drive) will want to leave by 3:30 or 4:00.
Janet, I don't know how long the color guard and drill event lasts, do you? (If not, I have some people I can ask.) I certainly don't want people to get there really early if you can't get there until after 1:00...???
The main things I'm concerned about are start time, weather (we are locked into this date; the pavilion is roofed), and a small bit of assistance paying for the pavilion. I recognize that everyone who attends also has to pay $5 to park...I live in an extortionate county, sorry...but the pavilion also cost money, so perhaps people who attend could contribute a small amount, $5 or less, toward the rental?
I think we should start somewhere around the time Janet can arrive, don't you all? I can get there early (to eject any squatters) and you all can come as time permits.
Kinder Farm Park is really a nice place. Please pray for good weather!

Nancy,
I'll be happy to contribute $5. We'll be there!
I can be there early if that helps. Do you need assistance?

Deborah

I don't know whether or not I need assistance, actually. The pavilion and picnic tables are already there. Once I survive this weekend (dance recital and Boy Scout fundraiser dinner) I will have time to go over there and check things out in detail.
Thanks, Deborah, for your gracious offer. I'll keep you posted!

Nancy: A new fluke from us. My sis just called to tell me they are planning a picnic for the Thurs with all the naval academy buddies of my nephew and of course the extended family - some of whom won't arrive until Thurs. I told her about the other picnic and she is supposed to put together specific info for me ASAP. I am not sure about how long the color guard and drill team events last - I'm looking it up on the academy website to see if they say. I'm beginning to think AM is better for us if it isn't too early for everyone else - but then you have rush hour in the AM so let me know. It could be that we arrive at 9:00 or as early as some folks get there. See that group, go to some events, come back and see the next wave, and then go to my sis's thing. Whatever happens, we'll contribute for the pavillion - just let us know. I'll get back with you when I find out from my sis what time we are supposed to be at her function. Can you go in and out on the same day without paying additional? We may find a time when most folks are there, pop in for a bit to meet everyone and then go back and come back to the park again whenever everything else is over. AAAH - my family never has plans locked in until the last minute.
I'm trying to find out the other schedule so we can figure out ours!!

Janet,
We can start whenever you like (the park opens at 7:00 AM!). The one thing we cannot do is change the date. It's locked in; we lose all the $$ if we change and we have to pay again for a new date.
Rush hour will mostly affect people traveling from northern Virginia; we do have a rush hour here, of course, but it's mostly heading into DC or up into Baltimore, and the park is kind of halfway between Baltimore and Annapolis.
Maybe the NOVA people could suggest an AM start time, or let us know when they plan to arrive?
I don't know if you can exit and re-enter, but I will find out. It's called a "daily entry fee," so there's hope.

Nancy:
Sorry about the panic - and have found that the color guard and drill will each be under an hour each so I should easily be able to be there between 1 and 3. I can come earlier as well (if anyone prefers early AM) and leave in time to get to the academy for the color guard and still come back at 1 for anyone else for whom that time is better. My sis said they will do a dinner so that won't interfere with the 4 real gathering for us!!! We may be doing a tour of the academy but that won't be until 3 or later - and we can always schedule a tour at some other time if it coincides, as either way, I think we'll have to pay since our extended family easily exceeds the 15 required for free tours. I'm so excited that this is really coming together.
Thank you so so much for organizing this. You certainly are generous with your time here!!! I cannot wait to meet you and whoever else makes it.
Janet

Piping in as one coming from NoVa......I would probably like to leave my area around 10ish and arrive at the park around 11ish. I will probably want to be on the road again by 3:30.
If you have a military sticker on the car can you get in for free? I know some parks around Va are like that.
Nancy, just wondering how far the park is from the Academy? You have probably already answered that elsewehere. I suppose Graduation Weekend is not the time to remind the kiddos they have indeed been to the Naval Academy. or visit Annapolis
Is the park close to the Horizon Dairy?
I am really looking forward to this get together!

You can't get in for free with a military sticker. I live in a mercenary county.
The park is about 25 minutes by car from the Academy.
Don't plan any activities around Annapolis during Graduation Week...trust me. Many locals leave town (esp. if they live right near there) because the traffic is really, really bad in Annapolis.
3:30 is a good leaving time for people who live near Mary Chris...maybe even earlier since it's the beginning of Memorial Day weekend. DC traffic is goony at the best of times...I worry a bit that the typical Friday madness will work its way backward into Thursday, if folks are leaving for a long weekend.
Kennedyville is on the Eastern Shore (a long drive, over an hour) from me...do you know if the dairy has tours? The website doesn't seem to say.

Nancy,
The last time I went to the Horizon Dairy it was near Crofton. I think I took rt 50, then got on 3. It has been a while. They did tours as a of a few years ago..... I thought it was the old Academy dairy but I may be dreaming.

You've got the right place, Mary Chris. And it was there last year, I just don't know in what capacity.
