Sounds like this would be a lovely time. I hope I'll be able to make it.

OK...here is the scoop.
The nonrefundable pavilion rental is $85 for a weekday (M, W or Th). It's $165 for weekends (F, S, Sun.). They suggest reserving soon because the last week of May is prime time for school picnics.
Janet and I were thinking of Thursday, May 24. Would that work for other interested families? We could do it in the early afternoon, for example, so that NoVA families could make it and so could people from PA, and still escape the worst return traffic.
If we have several families we'll be able to spread out the rental cost. The downside is that you can't get a refund if the weather is bad. Sometimes they give one for "extenuating circumstances," but wouldn't say what those were, exactly. Nor can we switch dates if the weather forecast is dismal. (May here is generally OK, but we could get rain.)
The other option is to not rent the pavilion, but then we won't have a shaded spot for the littles to nap in, etc. On the other hand, we would have flexibility.
The rental fee is on top of the $5 entrance fee, too.
All thoughts and ideas appreciated.

I would come to this if it doesn't end up being too expensive per family. We're on a tight budget these days.

Nancy,
You know I am up for it. I love Annapolis!
I have a few other ideas also......
Rachel and I are talking about a trip to the Basilica and JPII Cultural Center later this month.
I think it would be fun to meet up at the zoo, Mt. Vernon or Smithsonian every now and then.
PM me if you are interested in any of the above. |
|
|
When we get to the east, we will be seeing Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian, NGA, Monticello, the Frontier Culture museum (I already went to the zoo when I was pg with the first baby!), the Basilica.......and who knows what else....maybe some of you can join us...
...unless.....my dh is with us, then I will prob just keep it us so we can have our own family time, since he rarely gets to travel with us.....I am still working on the details....in fact, I have not even started yet
MC, I would love to hear what the JPII Cultural center is like do report back!

In years past we have talked about an East Coast camping trip. Maybe we can get some advice from Chari and Willa as to how to put one together.
Any suggestions for campgrounds? |

Mary Chris, we can chat about this on the phone if you would like....we have worked out a lot of bugs and after 5 years, our system seems to be proving itself!
Remember we tried to have an east coast CCM campout when I was there in 2003? That quickly ended in one night after flash flood warnings......but, the cool thing that came out of it, was the quality time we got to spend with Kristin and Katie, as they drove us back to our hosts.
BTW, thanks again for lending us the tent! Oh, no!! I just realized I never paid you for the campsite.....sheesh! I will pay up when I see you in VA this summer
Last post in this thread tonight, I think!

Nancy -
When you have a good idea of the cost, let me know how much, where to send it, etc. Which park are you thinking about?
Peace,
Nancy

Kinder Farm Park in Millersville. It's really nice; walking paths, two playgrounds (the main one is quite large), etc.

Nancy, thanks. Ditto about when you know the cost, please let us know and where to send the check. We are just glad to get the chance to meet so many and happy to contribute to the rent of the facility.
My oldest did make a request - she wanted to know if there would be older (ie teen and college age) there. I told her that I thought so but would ask. She'll be there regardless - but perhaps we should plan for them too. The younger ones will have plenty to do on the playground but is there a field that the older ones could put together a kickball game or soccer or something. I know we could bring a ball or two. Having something to do might make it less awkward for them to get to know each other.
Oh, Chari . I hate that we won't see you. We'll be headed for Ohio right after graduation on Friday. But maybe we could do it again another year - we do tend to drive up to DC once/year. Also if you all want to plan something centrally located, would AL qualify? We have lots of natural settings for campouts - and even cabins for those who tend to be more bug shy. Maybe we could plan a campout somewhere near the Shrine and then schedule a family retreat! I promise - no selfishness in this even though it would mean I wouldn't have to drive too far.

I will go over to the park this week and figure out the closest fields' proximity to the pavilions. It's a huge park. Teens could also bring rollerblades to use on the paths (bikes OK, so I assume skates are, too); they also have a disc golf (Frisbee) course. There are farm animals...birds...it's really a nice place.
My son will be 15 by the time this event rolls around. Any other teens?

Wow, Nancy, I forgot DC area parks are not just parks - they're productions. Around here parks mean a swing or two, a picnic table, maybe some other little children equipment and sometimes a big field. (The advantage - mom can see everyone from one spot but usually you have to think ahead to make sure olders are not left out). Guess there will be plenty of space and stuff for olders and youngers or so it sounds. Thanks - not knowing the area, I'm kind of blind but should have known you moms think of everything. We're looking forward to it.
Janet

Bump!
I have reserved a pavilion for Thursday, May 24.
We have it all day...what time would you all like to come? I have the pavilion nearest the playground, and the Frisbee golf course and farm animals are just a short walk away.
I can get there ahead of everyone, but I think we should pick starting and ending times.
Also, you'll have to pay $5 park (grrr). Sorry.
