OK, I must not be getting the same kind of traffic as you all. As far as I can tell, I've had no searches. (The only google referrals were people with google reader, I think.) I do wonder sometimes how people find my blog. |

Oh, you know what? It just occurred to me. In order for the Google and Yahoo bots to pick up your site, you need to submit your URL!

Has anyone actually UN-submitted their blog from Google or Yahoo? I am thinking of doing this. I don't want so much traffic, to be honest. It seems more people every day are coming to my blog from a google search (for completely unrelated things). I haven't really had any trouble from that, but I did get a couple of strange comments from someone who found me through a random search (their book title matched one I mentioned last year).
I was thinking of taking myself off that Google thing, but wanted to ask here about it first. Is anyone else bothered by this kind of traffic?

I did. Well, what I did was turn off the search engine check box in my blogspirit choices. So unless a person knows my address, or finds me through other blogs I don't come up in Google. I just didn't want that extra kind of traffic. Not that I get the amount you do, Dawn, but the few comments just made me feel vulnerable.

That's interesting, Dawn. I would love to hear more from you about why you're bothered by it. Your blog strikes me as a such a great witness--I'm thrilled to think of numbers of people landing there by accident and being exposed to such a smart, lively, beautiful chronicle of Catholic homeschooling life!
My search mystery of the week: Why have over 60 people come to me from a search for "Melissa goes"?
A while back Lilting House was getting tons and tons of hits from a college in Texas. Turned out a professor had used my site in a journalism class example.

I think my case is a bit different. I'm not homeschooling on a "regular" basis, don't blog frequently, and I don't have as much great ideas like yours, Dawn. Dh isn't completely won over of having other people see our lives, and if I want to post extended family pictures I needed to keep from being easily found. Those were my reasons.

Well, I'm sure 99% of the google hits are benign. But every once in a while there is someone who arrives by a search with obviously inappropriate (if not downright vulgar) terms. I wouldn't mind it if they just clicked right off, realizing at a glance that I am not talking about what they *thought* I was talking about! But it bothers me a lot when that person stays for several minutes and checks several pages, including my About page and my family index. That gives me the willies.
This latest person has left me a couple of comments that are not necessarily inappropriate, but very strange to say the least. He came by way of a google search for a book my son read. He left a comment, and I figured that was that. But he came back again and visited my other blogs, and left another (odd) comment, so now I'm thinking he's bookmarked me.
I love being part of the community of blogs and bloggers and I do enjoy having people visit, but I think perhaps most people (regular visitors) find me from links and blog rolls and the carnivals/awards and such.
I know what you mean though, Lissa. (And thank you for your extremely kind words. ) I have only had two people tell me that they found me from a google search - one was a long lost friend and one was a mother of a special needs child. I *am* glad they found me through google.
But as Jenn said, I dont want to feel vulnerable. I share a LOT about my family. I am thrilled to have people I "know" or who "know who I "know" visit me. I'm just not sure how I feel about the person who finds me through google when they are looking for something, well vulgar.
I guess I don't know what to do!

Dawn, I feel the same way about too much traffic! It's a little odd I suppose, but I feel a little overexposed when my site meter creeps up. But its also nice to know people are interested in what I am saying. Mixed feelings.
I thought I was the only blogger who felt this way, but I should have known....

Sorry that you've had bothersome comments, Dawn -- or at least something that doesn't quite ring true. It's all a bit strange, isn't it, because if that happened IRL there would be easier ways to deal with it.
I'm still in the position of being thrilled by extra hits. Also, I'm quite wary of what I post in terms of personal details -- I don't put my own photo in, nor any photos with the dc's faces (although I've broken my own rule with old newborn photos; I couldn't resist). I *do* share quite a lot, but it still feels fairly safe.
I would say, do whatever you feel comfortable with. If that means ungoogling the blog, go for it.

Dawn, I go back and forth--sometimes listing my blog on google, then getting rattled and taking it off, then putting it back again.
I know how you feel!

I just had an odd situation that freaked me out. But, after he researched for an hour, Kevin encouraged me not to give in to fear. I wanted to password protect the blog. It's the first time, and the fun and usefulness of the blog far outweighs an occasional odd thing.

I've had a few heebeejeebee moments with google and hit on my blog too. Sometimes I wonder what exactly people are looking for when they visit from some search. A couple of things come to mind on this though. 1. The first Catholic family blog I ever found was from a google search, and 2. this post from a few weeks ago. I have been very lucky not to have any weird comments left, and wordpress has an awesome spam protection.
