OK, I must not be getting the same kind of traffic as you all. As far as I can tell, I've had no searches. (The only google referrals were people with google reader, I think.) I do wonder sometimes how people find my blog.

Yes, she did, later in life.

My favorites from referrals to my blog were, "Does mac and cheese go bad?" and "how can you tell if mac and cheese is bad?'
That would be Yes and From the Mold. LOL!
(I can't add a siggy yet, but my blog is here: the Mac and Cheese Chronicles)

Oh, you know what? It just occurred to me. In order for the Google and Yahoo bots to pick up your site, you need to submit your URL!
Submit to Google
Submit to Yahoo
I think there are other ways for the bots to discover your blog, but this is certainly the fastest. And of course there are other search engines, but I admit I didn't bother with them.
You may also want to claim your blog at Technorati.

Thank you, Lissa! I don't think I ever did this. Now, am I opening myself up to trouble if I do? It's exciting to get "traffic" but sometimes it's unnerving, too, kwim?
I have been meaning to do technorati - I see so many of you have "tags" - and I will check into this. Thanks!

Dawn, you can also go through typepad and choose to make your blog public. I only did this a couple of weeks ago with Cottage Blessings, so now it comes up on search engines. Before that, it was unavailable except if discovered through 4Real or the Bonny Glen.

Or couldn't it be from someone clicking on your link from the comments - Alice linked you in her comment in the discussion of "Real Communities"? I think a bunch of my referrals come from the link from a comment I left because I'm not on many blogrolls but get referrals from those blogs.

I can see my general stats, but no fun search words here - mine isn't public and I didn't submit it to Google or Yahoo. Like Dawn, I wonder what that would open up and chose not to do it. Not sure I'm up for folks besides family/friends/4 Reallers reading it.

I get the biggest draw from those who misspell Mod Poge glue! (I think it should be Mod Podge)
I haven't had the heart to change my posts to the correct spelling. I might lose my biggest crowd.

OK, this is all too funny and tempting! Alice, thank you for the tip - I don't believe my blog is public at Typepad. And I have never submitted my URL to Yahoo or Google, as Lissa suggested.
For those of you who do have all these settings at your blog, have you had any improper comments?
I'm trying to think what my blog name might attract. I think I might be OK with sun, but candlelight could be trouble.

I've been using statcounter.
I like it because it is free AND (if you want) invisible.
Sitemeter charges in order to be invisible.

I've never had any problem with disagreeable comments, apart from some bot-generated comment spam, which is pretty easy to filter out. (If you have comment authentication enabled, you're already filtering it.)
I know some people have had contentious commenters (commentors?), but it hasn't happened to me. I think in most cases, if people get to you through a search and your blog isn't what they were expecting, they just leave without remark.
I find it so uplifting to know someone might have been helped by a post on my blog...I get quite a bit of email from parents of speech-delayed or hard-of-hearing children, and I know they would never have found me without the search engines. I wrote some pretty detailed posts about the speech banana & hearing aid process because I felt like I could have used a walk-through myself when Steven was first diagnosed.
I bet Helen's adoption posts are immensely helpful to many people. Your nature posts, Dawn, will probably attract a wide variety of interesting hits!
By the way, how you TITLE your individual posts has a lot to do with how high up in a search they show. For example, today at Bonny Glen I wrote a post called "Oh My Goodness." That isn't very informative as far as the search engine bots are concerned. I'd have gotten more traffic if I called it "New Yorker Artist George Booth Illustrates Reissue of Classic Children's Book Never Tease a Weasel." (LOL.) I usually lean more toward funny titles than "newsy" ones, but the newsy ones definitely boost your traffic.

I've never had problems with inappropriate comments. In Typepad, there are two ways to help - first make sure your comments must be authenticated before being posted. Second, you can have your comments be approved by you before they are posted. Another thing I just thought of is that if you set it to notify you by email for each comment, you'll see see anything improper before it's been on your blog long.

Lissa, these words have stayed with me. Last night someone found an old post of mine about my EB's speech issues and took heart as they are heading to a speech eval today. She thanked me and said she was glad she ran across my blog while "searching for some info." I'm taking that as a sign.

What about the reverse experience? Anyone gooled and gotten a 4 Real blog when you weren't looking for one?
A couple nights ago I was googling "la leche devotion history" and got both Elizabeth's and Rebecca's blogs. They didn't have info I was looking for because it was mixed posts that had the words - but small world experience anyway.
