I'm thinking curry might be just the thing for Epiphany. Does anyone have reliable and excellent recipe for curry? Other things to cook with middle eastern spices?

Thanks, Elizabeth. I never thought about having a Middle Eastern meal on that day.
Here is a great recipe.
Lamb Curry
Recipe Serves: 6
Recipes Ingredients:
1 1/2 kg Leg of lamb, boned
2 Garlic cloves, crushed
1 tb Coriander seeds
2 ts Fresh ginger, grated
2 ts Black peppercorns
2 ts Cardomom seeds
2 ts Cumin seeds
15 oz Can tomatoes
1/2 Cinnamon stick, crumbled
2 c Water
2 tb Oil
1 c Coconut milk
1 lg Onion, chopped
Recipe Instructions:
1. Remove fat from lamb, cut Lamb into 2.5 cm cubes. 2. Finely grind corriander seeds, peppercorns, cardamom seeds, cumin seeds, cloves and cinnamon. 3. Heat oil in a pan, add Lamb in three batches, fry until brown, remove. 4. Add onion, garlic, ginger and lemon grass to pan, stir-fry until onion is tender. Add spice mixture, stir-fry for 3 minutes. 5. Return Lamb to pan with undrained, crushed tomatoes, water and Coconut milk, bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, simmer, uncovered, stirring often, for 1-1/2 hours, or until Lamb is tender.

We're big Penzeys Spices fans here. Their chicken curry recipe is easy and tastes wonderful.
Now I am hungry.

Curry Sauce to go over rice ot whatever:
Brown finely chopped onion in butter.
When soft add:
1/4c. ketchup (weird, I know)
1/4c. milk
1-2 T. or more of curry powder (depending on you taste)
cook over med. heat until thickened
add 2 T. lemon juice
and serve.
This doesn't make much so I 4x the recipe. It is SO GOOD!
Good with lamb.

We love curry too. As for other dishes that use Indian spices, all of us love these Lamb patties (I don't use much red pepper because not all of us like the kick)...
Serve with a side of plain yogurt with some mint and cumin stirred into it. Add rice or couscous and a green salad and you have a tasty, easy, somewhat elegant dinner!
4 servings
INGREDIENTS
1 pound ground lamb
3 green onions, minced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon curry powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes
salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the grill for high heat.
In a bowl, mix the lamb, green onions, garlic, curry powder, cumin, red pepper, salt and pepper. Form into 4 patties.
Lightly oil grill grate. Grill patties 5 minutes on each side, or until done.

Just buzzed up to the local Patel Bros. and picked up all the ingredients...plus goat instead of lamb. Can't wait to put it all together.

We are big Penzey spice fans as well. I plan to use that recipe, but do you think that I can substitute the Maharajah Curry Powder for the Sweet/Sour Curry?

Elizabeth:
I am half Lebanese and grew up with several Mid Eastern dishes that were family favorites. One that is very easy to prepare and one that is a staple at my house is the following:
Meat and Rice
pound of ground beef
6 tbsp butter
2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp pepper
4 cups chicken boullion or chicken broth
2 cups of uncooked rice
Brown meat. Add butter and spices. Mix together. Pour in chicken broth. Stir in rice. Bring to a boil. Then simmer until rice is done.
Serve alone or with Labneh - plain yogurt mixed with a bit of garlic powder, mint and sliced cucumbers.
Enjoy!

Our Favorite curry right now is chicken breasts marinated with :
Olive Oil
Curry
Cumin
Paprika
Salt & White Pepper
Garlic
Lemon Juice
BBQ or Broil chicken breasts and slice diagonally to serve over cous cous, basmati rice or on top of a Greek Salad!! So Yummy!!

OK. I can vouch for Ruth's recipe now! I had to modify it as I have no stove (used a crock-pot), and the Pakistani butcher had only goat, no lamb, and I used fresh tomatoes. Other than that, I used the recipe provided.
I served it with fried papads, mango chutney, rice, spinach, and mango lassi. For dessert, we are having (after digesting a bit ) gulab jamun.

I had to laugh at the gulab jamun! Each time we have gone to India(3x) my husband eats these for breakfast, lunch, and supper--he just loves them. It is funny because he doesn't even like sweets. What could be sweeter than gulab jamun??

Our favorite Middle Eastern feast (Tunisian/Moroccan)
- couscous
- tagine - unfortunately I cannot find my recipe - but I just throw everything in - chicken (although the recipe calls for lamb), garbanzos, dried apricots, lemon juice, honey, onions, garlic, cinnamon, cumin, stock/water. You may be able to find a good tagine recipe online with correct proportions. Simmering in a clay pot gives a great flavor.

My dc may actually enjoy it better with no curry spice. Let's hope so, since that's on the menu for Epiphany!

Brenda, this is a curry recipe, but the curry ingredients are listed separately. "Curry" is an English word for a combination of several spices, and they vary from dish to dish, region to region. When you buy curry powder in a store, it is one kind of curry, ready to use. One can make her own curry using the ingredients listed above, or any combination of eastern spices.

When Gwen suggested curry for Epiphany on another thread, I was not buying it. I'm not a fan of curry spices or the smell. Cannot tolerate it.

Thanks Macbeth. I was thinking that might be the case but it's nice to have it confirmed. Even nicer since I think we have all the necessary spices in the cabinet!
