Any time, Cay. AG Place is a quick commuter train ride from here.

I took my kids to see this on Friday night - a nice diversion from my mom's surgery as I couldn't be there and since it was her birthday, it was our celebration....
It was such an enjoyable movie for me and the kids...what was really cool is that I had to keep sushing Isabella when she'd recognize the historical figures...."Oh, Mom! That's Sacagawea! Oh, Mom! Atila!"
When we left the theater, I was promptly informed that we would have to buy this when it came out on DVD.
The only thing I didn't like was that I thought the ending was a wee bit flat...but maybe that's just me...

I was just thinking about it today. I'd love to go before my oldest dd starts college. |
|
|
And, as my dd HAS started college.....that is the reason THIS is the summer we must do that cross country trip we have all talked about for ten years.....
....and, bringing this back to the thread topic
after watching this movie, I cannot wait to go to the NYC natural history museum....is it REALLY that cool, MacBeth????? Inquiring minds just have to know!
If it is, I think looks WAY cooler than the Smithsonian
So, can I temporarily hijack Cay's invitation for the Bryans?
hanging out in nevada for new years......sobbing because my college team (nevada-reno) lost their bowl game by one point...

I wish we could all just meet somewhere central -- Kansas or Nebraska or something. We're heading back to South Carolina this summer for a niece's wedding (after first dropping Joe at LSU -- Cay we're heading down I20 from Dallas) but we just can't get as far north as New York -- and on top of that, it seems some 4Realer is scheduled to talk at our Denver conference and we may NOT be back in time -- what a drag!

Mary,
Let me know if you come through the Lake Charles area. (We vacationed in Dallas this past summer. It isn't a bad drive at all. ) It'll put you coming through on the way to LSU.
I'll have a gumbo waiting on the stove.

We loved the movie too - and I am on a search through our local bookstores for a copy of the book.
I think its a great way to begin a visit or re-visit of history - and museums!

It is a little less--er--lively than the film portrays it ! It is my favorite museum in the world (sorry Smithsonian, British, and Field Museum fans!). It is large and creepy, yet airy and modern. It is the place in which I would most like to be lost. I have been "behind the scenes," and seen some amazing collections. It has rooms and rooms and rooms of dead things, and the best living docents of any museum I have ever visited. I want to work there when I grow up.
Some highlights include holograms, a brilliant hall of invertebrates, a hall of diversity, dinosaurs (of course), earth science...the new Rose Center at the planetarium, kids programs, lectures...ah. I love that place!

Cay, my dd and your Chelsea would get along wonderfully! We did the L. A. (not LA! ) AG Place trip last spring (my parents live near it) and had a great time. (Even though Frugal Mommy didn't spring for tea AND doll stuff.)
We live near Our Nation's Capital, too (as do many other wonderful ladies here!).
Hint, hint!

Wow, I am so excited! I just checked the website for the Harvard Museum of Natural History and starting later this month there will be an exhibit on polar explorations! Some time ago, I found out about a relative that traveled with Admiral Byrd (posted about it here) and had been meaning to delve into that story with the boys. Completely forgot of course.
Now we have an even better reason to get over to the museum!

Cay, for real Cajun Gumbo we would drive down to visit anyway! (My MIL, bless her soul, makes it with turkey sausage and other non-natural ingredients)!
Blessings to one and all -- we're off to NaM right now.

We were so inspired that we buzzed into the museum this morning, and the conversation went something like this:
Wow! What if the Hall of Biodiversity came to life in the movie? Or the New Ocean Life exhibit? Hey, I wish these Greenlanders could come to life, and show us how to make those cool boots...What about these Olmec heads? Would they want to chew gum like the Easter Island head? It'd have to be a lot of gum. If those archaeologists digging the dino nest came to life, we could help them!
On and on...

I was thinking about you while I cooked supper tonight, Mary.
I made a crawfish fettucini. My family swears that they've died and gone to heaven when I make my fettucini.
I'll let you choose which dish you want. Or I'll just make both.

Cay: dh says "oh my gosh....we'll be there." High praise indeed!
We loved this movie -- went today. The only thing I didn't like were the two references to evolution -- both from Robin Williams. But a teachable moment. Granted a few of mine guffawed at the urinating monkey, many of us really laughed out loud at the Hun scenes, etc.
Thomas wants to go to the Denver museum tomorrow (actually he wanted to go after the movie today, but we didn't have time) so if that's not a confirmation of the worth of this movie!

OMG!
I made a mental note of that then promptly forgot it!
Yes, that is something to be take into consideration. But, like you said, Mary, it's a good teachable moment.

We loved the movie, too. As for the evolutionary moment of Teddy Roosevelt exhorting the father to maturity by saying "Who is evolved? Who is evolved"...I think it went over most people's heads, in our audience, anyway. The one "potty" word I noticed was "Kissass", in reference to the tiny centurion. I hate that word, but I have to confess that I giggled at the moment
There's a wonderful play about Teddy Roosevelt that makes the circuits from time to time called "Bully Pulpit". A one man show. I enjoyed it so much, I hauled my bigger kids off to see it, too-and they very much enjoyed it. Highly recommended. Old TR was an amazing man (though one of the quotes he used in the movie was definitely NOT his: the "some men are born great" quote actually comes from Shakespeare, "Twelfth Night": "Some men are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatnesss thrust upon them" or something like that. It's a great quote, in any event!)
This movie could be the springboard for one heck of lapbook!
