Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

…As they’re faced with a relapse of my psoriatic arthritis. This looks like a pretty severe flare. It came on very quickly and I am unable to walk. My cane is useless to me since the arthritis has settled into my right arm (elbow, wrist and hand). Our home is not equipped for assistive devices, though I think I may need a wheelchair at least temporarily. It is so difficult for them. The children must help out far more than they should, Brian has to juggle work and caring for me. The little ones don’t understand why Mama can’t get down and play. Extended family and friends find it difficult to understand the cycle of relapse and remission.

I am unable to take medications because I’m nursing our little Louis who is just 2 months old. The medication my doctor wants to give me is extremely effective, but I can’t get an answer about how it is manufactured – whether or not it is made with fetal cells… We are hoping to find a naturopathic doctor that understands our religious perspective on NFP and prolonged nursing. I have had remission as a result of very careful diet changes, but it takes time to see results.

In the meantime, things are hard for Brian and the children. I am trying to get through this with as much grace and dignity as possible, without overburdening them with chores to do.

Many thanks!

Nissa it may console you to know that my maternal grandfather wheeled his mother around in a wheelchair throughout most of his childhood...she was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis...helping his mother while growing up enabled him to be a much more compassionate and helpful husband and father to his nine children. May the Lord give you and your family the grace and assistance you need to cope with your illness. You are in our prayers.

That is a comfort. I often fear that my children will resent me for the times when I'm not myself. One of my dear friends has been battling MS for 20+ years. Her only daughter is a wonderful little girl, so helpful and compassionate. In my case, the arthritis goes into remission for long periods - usually in pregnancy. My children are blessings to me in so many ways! [:-)] I think it must be terrible for them to have me be normal and healthy and then suddenly... not.

I am much more worried for them all, my husband Brian included.

Nissa,
I'm sorry for your relapse and more so because it is hard as a mom to let others do for you. I'll pray for you and your family, especially the little one who only knows he has the best mom in the world.

Nissa, this type of back and forth is so difficult on all involved. There is so much comfort in any routine, even when the routine is difficult. When we finally get into a groove and are feeling on top of things then have the rug pulled out suddenly from under us...that's so tough and discouraging. Thankfully we can grow in trust and faith that God is loving each family member through the challenges.

I'm praying for improved health and that you all find peace very soon.

Love,

Thank you all for your prayers. I'm feeling my spirits lift and my children and husband have been calm and strong. I'm continuing my research into treatment options and assistive devices. I've started to ease back into my dietary routine starting with super-hydration. Next will be to alkalize and watch my diet closely for known irritants.

Journalling about it all on my blog may prove to be cathartic, and might help someone else who reads it, who knows?

I am going to start a St. Benedict Novena on New Year's Day. He's very special to our family and is also the patron of people with inflammatory diseases.
