Gwen, how awesome! I have cousins in Denver, too...hopefully they are all safe at home, still (they were this AM).
We were stuck in the snow in Sardegna once. I now KNOW I have a Guardian Angel. He drives a red RAV4.
I'm glad your husband's Angel was on duty today!

Oh, Gwen! I'm so glad he's safely home.
What a scary experience!!!
Being from Louisiana which = no snow at all, I 'm wondering. What happens if the blizzard lasts for days and it gets so bad that the lanes become a motionless parking lot and one's car runs out of gas???
Do they have to sit and wait it out? I'm just wondering if the state provides some rescue system for that.
Hope this doesn't make me sound like a totally stupid southern.

The National Guard was out tonight in the area where Gwen's dh had been traveling - it was the worst road in the area - others weren't having the same severe delays. The NG was helping stranded motorists get off the road and to shelters if needed. The state department of transportation tows abandoned cars so they can plow. I think it is probably like the emergency efforts with other natural disasters in other areas in a lot of respects. People are also often brought in by other ememrgency services - state patrol, etc. The Red Cross opened up about a half dozen shelters (in rec. centers and high schools) for stranded motorists. The shelters are also available for those experiencing power outages - which fortunately I haven't heard of associated with this storm to any large degree. The early fall and late spring storms, when we have leaves on the trees, usually bring lots of branches and electric power lines down.
This would be a pretty typical response to a storm like this. They are predicteding this storm is going to fall as the 6th or 7th biggest storm in recorded history for the area.
And prayers here for Steve, Maria.

Praying for Steve Maria!!
Cay, MaryM's right...the Nat'l Guard showed up (I think it was them as nobody else could get there) and specifically in the case of Hwy 36, they moved a bunch of cars and a bus out of the road so traffic could move. And apparantly they did an outstanding job; just when it seemed impossible that the road would be cleared overnight, they cleared it before bedtime. It is miraculous to me.
Yes, people are supposed to stay in their cars. It seems dangerous but it is much more risky to get out in 40 mph winds with blowing snow and try to find somewhere to go.
Today the NG is getting essential personnel to and from work at hospitals and police depts. and they're available to get food to the airport if need be. Those cars that ran out of gas will be towed all day today for free.

Thank you so much, Mary and Gwen - he's driving through the Siskiyous right now and then through Ashland, Oregon onto Medford. I'm not sure his final destination for the day but I really appreciate your prayers for his safety!

Here's a bit of what it looks like around here following the blizzard - pictures.
We can't get out of our neighborhood yet except on foot.

Great pictures Mary! Our dc had some tunnels too; a totally new experience for the 2 youngest boys. There will be sledding on the big hill up at the rec center tomorrow and who know what for days to come. We have had such mild winters for the past 6 years, this year has been a shocker so far. If I had any thoughts of dc making cookies, homemade cards, listening to stories, etc. they're dashed. I won't see them much between now and Sunday morning Mass.
